Any help tutorials on how to run and execute plays?

I'm new to this series and I think its an amazing game. However, I think I would get more out of the offense if I understood how to call and run plays effectively. Can anyone direct me to some tutorial videos on how to run plays for a rookie? Also, is there a way to practice running plays in the game?

    Thanks,

Some videos by OS member Da Czar:

The first video is from Nba 2k12 but should still apply to Nba 2k14. Practice play mode has been removed.

In my opinion the best way is to put playcalling on auto. Use your POE to tailor the play calling to your teams strength. That's about all POE is good for in my opinion, that and crashing the boards.

If you're not familiar with this, it goes like this: With playcalling on auto when you set POE that type of play is called by the CPU.

      pick & roll
      get shooters open
      feed post
      play through [specific player]

Also turn the play art onto full. This will help you understand where the play is going.

Do this for a while and you'll get a feel for what plays work for specific players and where on the floor you need to be to make them work best.

I still keep playcalling on auto with POE to ensure that i use a variety of plays throughout the game, but i also call specific plays that i've learned that will work in situations.

For example, i use the Bobcats in MyGM. Al Jefferson is my go to scorer. Before the game i set POE to either play through Al Jefferson or feed post. I usually do feed post because MKG can do work in the post against smaller wings. With that setting the auto play calls are going to be inside post with some high post to MKG mixed in.

Last night for example, i was playing the Pacers. The Pacers are a physical inside team and their POE was either nothing inside or focus on Al Harrington. He was getting doubled and hacked on every post entry. In addition to passing out to a jump shooter, i eventually changed my POE to pick & roll. This then had the auto calls changing to pick & roll plays. After it was apparent that the CPU had altered it's POE i could go back to feed post POE.

Anyway, i've probably rambled on POE too much but it's impact on auto playcalling is actually a feature that i like a lot. It's impact on defense(or lack thereof) is for another thread. Read: I hate it.

Once you get a feel for spacing, play initiation, and variations once a play breaks down in auto playcalling you can start learning and calling specific plays for specific players. The way i did that was by going into the play settings for each individual player and designating only one type of play. Use a play type that works for that players skills and tendencies.

For example: I have MKG set to only cutter. Then when i hit left bumper on xbox, followed by the button for his position, it shows all the cutter plays for MKG. This streamlines the play calling and allows me to run all the cutter plays for him to see which ones i like. Once i have a grasp of his cutter plays i switch it to high post, and so and so forth.

One thing that annoys me about this type of playcalling is that you can't customize it beyond that. I would prefer for page 1 and 2 to be cutter, and page 3 and 4 to be high post, etc.. But you can't do that. If you select two play types for a player the first line will be cutter, the second high post, the third cutter, fourth high post...they alternate. If you have four play types for a player then it lists them 1-4 on the page, etc. But i digress...

So what i do is pick no more than two play types for each player. In many cases only one. For example, Al Harrington is only low post. MKG is cutter/high post, and sometimes i'll switch it in game to low post/high post. Gary Neal only has 3 point plays. This way i quickly have command of the plays that are best for each individual on the court and can get a play called in time to execute it before the shot clock becomes a factor. If something isn't working due to matchups, or if i wan't to exploit a matchup i'll go into the menus in-game and change to plays for a specific guy to take advantage.

At this point i then go into my playbook and delete plays i don't like or use, and add plays that utilize my players skills.

Utilizing plays makes the game. With the Bobcats i can be very competitive by getting into good plays and execution. Running basic pick and rolls and iso's isn't going to get me far, though i certainly will do that if a play breaks down or at the end of quarters. Sometimes quick post is really effective as well. Bottom line though, with the exception of transition buckets i'm running a play every possession.

Sorry for the long post. Maybe it helps. Have fun!

Is there anywhere we can go to add plays from other playbooks to the team you are usings playbook. Or is this yet another casualty of the next gen jump.

You definitely can for MyGM. I run a lot of 90 Lakers post plays for Al Harrington. Otherwise i have no idea.

How about in just a quick game or a play with friends game? Specifically a play with friends game.

At the play book menu within the create/edit roster screen, the play catalog (press Y on Xbox one) should have all of the plays available in the game. They are categorized (ex. isolation, midrange, post up low). All the plays are listed in numerical and alphabetical order. I only play offline so I'm not sure if it works for online.

Why did they remove the practice plays option?
