Do you ever play OFF-BALL D, if yes, how often?

I would like to ask you guys, something I have been struggling with:

when I am playing on-ball defense, so let’s say I am guarding the AI’s PG, and I see the AI’s SG is coming off screens and get an open shot, so if I see this going on, should I switch to my SG and try to MANUALLY make the SG avoid the screens so that the wide open shot will not be open for him…or

during fast break situation, the AI’s PG is attacking fast running at me, should I manually control my PF or C to run back and stay in the paint and let my AI’S TEAMMATE, MOST LIKELY THE PG, to stop the ball and then switch back to manually using the PG after stopping the AI’s PG to throw the ball at the cutting player under the basket to score on me…

This is something I have been struggling to figure out for years in this game, hope I can get some help?

I play Off-Ball Defense all the time. It's necessary if you want to be proactive in avoiding defensive lapses by your AI teammates. After missed shots I immediately switch to either my agile power forward or one of my wing players to get back on defense, it's pretty crucial. Some people complain about the fact that they have to micro-manage every player on the court in order to be successful, but I kind of like it.

It requires you to be hyper-aware of what is going on at all times, just like in real life. I've been playing 2K for 10 years and when I put in 2K16 I was getting blown out every single game by CPU, I thought I would never get better but you realize you have to slow the game down sometimes, play to your strengths, take smart shots, attack mismatches, and protect the ball.

Shifting to help on off ball AI and if dude is going to one player every time, Curry, I'll just shadow him and make him have to do something else.

90% of people use zero dribble moves, or have no idea what they are doing, so personal on ball D still shuts them down most of the time.

If the other guy has a particularly effective player on offense compared to everyone else on the team, yeah, I switch my human-controlled player to defending him sometimes.

After all, 2K has said that a human defender is more effective than a CPU one.

Very good reply brother, thank you. What I realized is that if you play on ALLSTAR SIM, you are able to play like the way I would like to play defense, I don’t manage other four players on my team while I am playing on-ball defense and of course they make mistakes such as their guys cutting backdoor but this doesn’t happen TOO OFTEN to the point I feel like I am being cheesed on, but on SUPERSTAR SIM, if you just play on-ball you will get killed badly by the AI because like you said bro, you have to be focused in every single player on your’s and AI’s team at all times…which I don’t know, I feel like the reason I have all those defensive settings before the game is to allow myself to play on-ball defense, but unfortunately those defensive settings don’t work as well as I set, causing the AI cheese me up badly on SUPERSTAR SIM…which forces me to wonder if playing off-ball is needed or not?

All the time. I dont trust the back line of the defense to position or rotate how they should consistently.

so how do you set the defensive setting before the game? Since you will controlling all 5 guys all the time, do you just leave all settings to auto? Thanks!

Im almost always on ball, probably 95% or more of the time. When I switch its usually on the pick set, I will change to the defender of the guys setting the pick.

I will play off ball A LOT. Online, offline, doesn't matter. I guard the most immediate threat. I try to fight through every screen.

With basic sliders the AI is very cheesy on SS and HOF imo

Yeah lol, that's why I was playing one quarter last night 8 mins with Twolves of Cassell, Spreed, KG against the Blazers of Damen and Sabonis, had so much fun just focused playing on-ball defense without feeling being cheated by CPU!

Im not able to play SS sim without doing some adjustments to slider any longer. I find AS to play the most realistic, without doing much slider adjusting except upping fouls sliders. Above that I think the boost in attributes, such as speed, starts making a unfair advantage against you, along with some other attributes that get boosted that shouldnt.
I know the highest difficulty gets ridiculous boost to the AI in areas that dont make sense. Someone here a few years ago showed a chart in the slider section where the boost were and how much on each difficulty level. Someone more PC savy than me probably could link you to it. Maybe 1 day the devs will figure a better way to make difficulties harder without giving certain unfair boost in some areas. But thankfully thats why we have sliders, to negate that, even if at times it can seem never ending.

I'd do it to manually bring over a double team (I prefer to bring it myself rather than use the mechanic to do so).

Or if I need a possession off so I can do OTF subbing etc. Then I'll control someone in the corner just to make my subs while the possession happens.
