Just bought an HDMI cable for Xbox 360...
and I'm having some trouble. My TV wouldnt recognize that it was plugged in so I couldnt select the HDMI input source. I finally decided to turn on my Xbox, and it then recognized it. While I was using my Xbox with composite cables, it automatically read that an A/V cable was plugged and I could select that source without the Xbox being on. Is this just something with my TV or does this differ with the brand of HDMI cable? I almost went to return the cable because I thought it didnt work until I decided to turn on the Xbox...I have a Samsung LCD HDTV btwTags: None -

Your TV does it for all input? Whether its A/V, component, composite, HDMI, etc? What kind of HDMI cable do you use?Comment

The tv isn't going to recognize anything being there until whatever it is (blu ray player, PS3, etc) is actually turned on. Nothing is wrong with the tv or the HDMI cable.Comment

Ok, thanks for the help guys. Only reason why I was alittle concerned was because when I was using the A/V cable, the TV recognized that an A/V cable was plugged in, even tho the Xbox wasn't turned on.Comment

Yeah it is just an HDMI thing, unless the source is turned on, it won't recognize it.Comment

Yeah it doesnt let me select HDMI until I turn on the console. Oh and what is DVI? One of the ports is HDMI/DVI and the other two are just HDMI. Another thing....I've been reading about HDMI cables, and apparently there is supposed to be an optical audio adapter included with the Microsoft brand?Comment

DVI is another way of getting 720p or 1080p resolution. It doesn't do any audio so you would still need an optical cable or RCA (red/white) cables.
HDMI does the digital video and audio in one cable. Wouldn't need anything else.Comment
