    Golf Site for Beginners?

Does anybody know of a site that breaks down what the numbers mean for drivers and different irons (i.e how many yards is it recommended for), etc...

i'm not really sure if that exists or not, because people's distance really varies. What you'd really have to do is take the clubs out and see what you actually hit them. I mean I know I can hit a drive 200+, whereas I have a friend who doesn't get that much distance on his drives (150-200ish, 200 if he's lucky)

I know different clubs have different ranges.

When I go to the driving range, I always borrow my friends driver. It has the number 3 on it. With this driver I've hit the ball 160yrds a couple of times.

Last week I went to the driving range and had to rent a driver. It had the number 1 on it, and I later found out it was a female driver too. Despite getting a couple of nice swings, I couldnt hit it further than 80yrds with this driver.

I would just like to know what the numbers represent.

A 3 is not a Driver. A 3 is a 3-Wood (regardless of material). A Driver (in most cases) will have a 1 on it. Most people can hit a 3 truer than a Driver, but should get more distance from their Driver. But, like MGo said, distance will vary. My golf buddy outhits his Driver with his fairway wood. I have a driving iron that I can consistantly outhit my Driver with.

That's the beauty of golf.... EVERYONE'S game is different.

          Interesting.

The 3 looks exactly like a Driver. Since I get more distance with the 3, I'll stick with it.

              Re: Golf Site for Beginners?

              Ill answer the question.....

The number on a club, has to do with the ammount of Loft the clubface has. The lower the number the less loft....

What does that mean? Less Loft equates to a greater ammount of force driving the ball forward instead of up. Techniquely this should give you greater distance. If you cannot hit the ball cleanly though, less loft means that your more likely to hit a worm burner across the ground than get distance. You hit the 3 - Wood better because the face has slightly more loft to help get the ball off the ground. The Driver had a straighter clubface and your swing is not yet capable of hitting it well enough to use it effectively (Stick with the 3-Wood - many golfers hit 3-Woods instead of drivers because of the above description.)

There are severl lofts on woods (They are called woods because they used to be made of wood. They are now made of metals.), but 1 (Driver), and 3 (3-Wood) are the most common. The iron numbers work in the same way. The 9 iron has greater loft than a 3 iron. This makes your ball travel higher but gives you less distance. This allows you to use the same basic swing for most shots, and all you have to do is use the right club for the distance. The distance each club hits is variable to you and your swing. You have to figure that out. The higher lofted clubs (7 iron, 8 iron, 9 iron) are typically more acurate as putting height on the ball can take away some of the inaccuracy your golf swing creates. The Wedges (Pitching Wedges, Sand Wedges, Lob Wedges) have even higher lofts for shots closer to the green.

              Any questions????

                Got it.

                Good info.

For some reason I always thought the 3-Wood was actually a driver.

                  My 3-Wood is my driver.

I never use the big dog because I can't keep it accurate enough. It helps that I can hit my 3-wood as far as my 1-wood.

But yeah, technically the driver and 3-wood are two different clubs. I tend to look at the 3-wood as a driver though, since I use it that way.
