New Beginning | Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL 17)

With a dismal 2015-2016 season that saw them go 29-42-11 now behind them and the rebuild process completely taking over, the Toronto Maple Leafs head into the 2016-2017 season as the underdogs with nothing to lose. First overall pick Auston Matthews will be under the spotlight for the majority of the season as the fate of the Maple Leafs' rebuild lies largely on the 19 year old's shoulders. Matthews, along with fellow rookies Mitch Marner and William Nylander are expected to make a large contribution up front while newly acquired netminder Frederik Andersen is expected to reinforce what seems to be a weak defensive unit. Follow along to see what the 2016-2017 season holds for the boys in Blue and White!

Maple Leafs Prepare For Season Opener

On the eve of the Toronto Maple Leafs season opener on the road against Ontario rivals the Ottawa Senators, head coach Mike Babcock was seen to be tinkering with the lines.

First overall pick Auston Matthews seems destined to start the season on the first line along with centre Tyler Bozak and the Leafs' last season's leading scorer--James Van Riemsdyk. Fellow rookie William Nylander was seen skating on the second line with veterans Joffrey Lupul and Nazem Kadri whereas OHL star Mitch Marner centered the third line.

On the defensive side, Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner paired up on what seems to be the team's first defensive pairing. Although lacking a shutdown defenceman, the Leafs will roll with a younger defensive core consisting of Rielly, Gardiner, Roman Polak, Connor Carrick, Matt Hunwick, and Frankie Corrado.

As expected, Babcock announced that Frederik Andersen will get the nod in net for the Leafs against the Senators with Jonas Enroth serving as the backup to start the season.
