Seattle, Washington- The Seattle Metropolitans are best remembered for being the first American team to lift the Stanley Cup. As of today, the Metropolitans will have a chance to add to their storied history as the National Hockey League (NHL) announced it will be expanding to include a team in the city of Seattle.

The team is to be called the Seattle Metropolitans and is expected to compete in the Atlantic Division. The Mets will don the colours of old (maroon, dark green, and cream) and are believed to unveil their jerseys within the next few days.

Meanwhile, the expansion draft occurs next week and will allow the Metropolitans to select one unprotected player from each team in the NHL to form their team. Along with the exciting news of an expansion franchise, the NHL has also released a statement that the Arizona Coyotes franchise will be folding.

Each player on the Arizona Coyotes' roster will have their contracted terminated immediately by the NHL, yet will be open for other teams to sign in Free Agency. Seattle, meanwhile, will have their pick of any player currently on the Arizona roster.

It's widely believed that the Metropolitans will nab the smooth skating Oliver Ekman-Larsson, however, sources have indicated that the Metropolitans are also intrigued by young forwards Max Domi and Anthony DuClair as well as recent draft pick Jakob Chychrun.

The NHL has also stated that any prospect that is property of the Arizona Coyotes (ages 18-20) will be re-entered into their respective CHL teams and be eligible to be drafted in the 2017 Entry Draft.

* The Las Vegas franchise must select one player from each presently existing club for a total of 30 players (not including additional players who may be acquired as the result of violations of the Expansion Draft rules).

* The Las Vegas franchise must select the following number of players at each position: 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders.

* The Las Vegas franchise must select a minimum of 20 players who are under contract for the 2017-18 season.

* The Las Vegas franchise must select players with an aggregate Expansion Draft value that is between 60-100% of the prior season's upper limit for the salary cap.
