John Chayka as new Coyotes General Manager.

27-year-old Chayka Named Arizona GM

The youth movement happening with the Arizona Coyotes is not just about the players. Today it was announced that a 27-year-old, Ontario native, John Chayka has been given control of the Coyotes' rebuild by being named the youngest general manager in NHL history. Chayka built his reputation on analytics with his company "Stathletes". Now his task is the make a Coyotes team that has missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for 4 straight years relevant again.

"Success will likely not be an overnight thing," Chayka said at his introductory press conference. "However, there are pieces in place here that make me excited about the future of this franchise. People want a winner, and that's what we're here to provide. The goal is to win the Stanley Cup. Nothing else will be sufficient."

Chayka takes over from long-time Arizona GM Don Maloney who was fired at the end of the 2015-16 season after failing to capitalize on the Coyotes' run to the Western Conference Final in 2012. Head coach Dave Tippett will remain behind the bench and keep his role as Executive VP of Hockey Operations.

The squad Chayka inherits is predicted by most to be one of the bottom-tier teams in the league. Captain Shane Doan is 39, 12 years older than Chayka. Defensive standout Oliver Ekman-Larsson leads the blueline and is coming off consecutive 20+ goal seasons, but that position lacks depth. Max Domi, a 2013 1st Round pick, scored 18 goals and 52 points in his rookie season and is considered the future of Arizona's forward group, that like defense, has several holes.

So that's the situation for Chayka - not an easy one. With constant relocation talk and poor on-ice product, the people of Arizona are looking for a reverse of fortune with their hockey club and are willing to trust a 27-year-old to do it. Lets see how it goes.

The Magic Man is bringing his act to Arizona.

Datsyuk Chooses Coyotes Over KHL

The first big move of the John Chayka era in Arizona surprised everyone today when 38-year-old star center Pavel Datsyuk announced he was not in fact headed home to Russia, but instead joining up with the Coyotes to extend his prolific NHL career. Arizona acquired the rights to Datsyuk from the Detroit Red Wings on June 24 in a draft night trade that also got the Coyotes the 16th overall pick (Jakob Chychrun) for the 20th pick (Dennis Cholowski), the 53rd pick (Filip Hronek), and Joe Vitale. It seemed at the time that Datsyuk was certainly headed to the KHL to sign with SKA St. Petersburg, but now things have dramatically changed.

"I decided to remain in the NHL," Datsyuk said. "Things change and that's what happened. I have 1-year left on my contract, so maybe I go back to Russia next year."

Datsyuk broke into the league with Detroit in the 2001-02 season and has won 2 Stanley Cups in his career. In 953 games, he has 314 goals and 918 points. The remaining year of his contract has a salary cap hit of $7.5 million.
