Simulating an NFL Expansion Team in Madden 2017.
To Start with, you will need to select what team you are removing from the league. This team, is the base team you will use for the actual creation of your expansion team. I usually chose the Lions if i want to be in the NFC, or the Jaguars or Chargers if i want to be in the AFC.
I have Attached a list i have put together of players each team would need to make available in order to do an expansion draft.
How i decided who made the list.
Rule #1 - MUST have at LEAST 2 years remaining on current contract.
Rule #2 - CANNOT be a rookie.
Rule #3 - CANNOT be a starter, unless there is a plausable reason why they would be on this list. (For example, TE Dennis Pitta from Baltimore. The Ravens have 2 young TE's who are very good as well, and Pittas contract is pretty large. )
Rule #4 - They MUST have at least 2 years in the league. (There are some exceptions to this rule on my list, but this was either due to me personally liking the player, in the case of Blake Bell and Bryce Petty, or there were no other options who fit the above criteria. This is really the only rule i wavered on when putting together the list)
Now, I have included MY completed Draft, with the players i selected for my own team, but feel free to conduct your own Expansion draft using the available players. If you disagree with someone i deemed available, let me know who, and why, and who you would replace them with! I'd love to have feedback there.
When conducting your own expansion draft, i followed the rule that NO MORE than 2 players may be selected from any one team. You could chose to make an "Agreement" with another team, and take a group of 3 "Bad" contracts, in exchange for 2 players you WANT to be available from that team (As long as they still fit the above criteria)
Additionally, each time a player is selected from a team, the team who lost a player then has the right to protect ONE of the remaining 4 players, making them no longer available. When i conducted my own expansion draft, as you will see with the attached spread sheets, i listed WHO they protected. Once a second player was selected from that team, they then protected the remaining 2 players. Leaving them with 2 players taken from them, and 3 players protected.
In order for the expansion draft to be complete, i followed the rule that you MUST select at LEAST 34 Players, OR spend at LEAST $65m of your cap space. It just so happened, that for my draft i was able to do both.
The next step, is to move all of your expansion draft players to the team you are replacing. I follow the rule, that the highest overall on the team you are replacing goes to the team you selected from first. So lets say you are replacing the Lions, and as i selected first in MY draft, CB Dennard. I would trade Slay to the Bengals in exchange for Dennard. Once you have moved all of your expansion draft players to your team, go into free agency and fill out the rest of your roster with free agents 65 overall or less (as available. You may have to take someone rated slightly higher if no one else is available) Then, release the remaining players from the teams original roster.
Now that you have a completely new roster on the team you are replacing, its time to start that franchise! Select the OWNER of the team you are replacing, begin your franchise, input your desired Sliders, and XP sliders, and begin the relocation process. I will generally make sure i am still geographically correct when i select what city i relocate to. For example, if i replace the Lions, i will make sure to select a Northern city, be it New Jersey, Portland, Toronto, etc.
Make sure you sim each week individually and that you set your team to lose every single game so that you get the #1 pick, and are able to get your scouting in.
Also, Any free agents you sign to fill out your roster in the main menu portion of this exercise, should NOT be on your roster when the offseason begins. You should have ONLY the players you selected during the expansion draft on your roster in the offseason.
As you begin the offseason, i have some house rules.
