Can you only use Contact button or need rt analog too?

Can you hit by only selecting the X button for Contact or do you have to use the right analog stick for plate coverage? I have only been using the X button but seem to miss alot of pitches that are not close to the middle of the plate. Should I be using the stick? I have the setting to OFF but I was wondering what you guys are seeing/doing...

The right analog stick is something you use BEFORE the pitch to tell you batter if you want to hit a fly ball or grounder by pushing up or down. To actually improve contact with the ball you are supposed to use the LEFT analog stick and aim it where the ball hits in the 9 zones.

On rookie and veteran I don't think the L-stick will do anything (at least according to the definitions last year) as its pure timing. On All-Star it is a more generic zone of four I think (not sure) and on HOF level you have to pick the zone more accurately as its broken down into 9 locations. However, I've read that on the higher difficulty levels you can still get away with just trying to swing based on timing. I stay on veteran since I don't want to use the L-stick. I strikeout enough without trying to locate the ball at the same time.
