    SCEA SD commentary technique


    I don't know what their method is, but I would love for SCEA San Diego(SD) to share their commentary techniques with all sports games developers, even if it cost me an a dollar or 2. If Madden featured on its features list all new commentary done by SCEA SD, I would pay the extra 2 dollars for the license fee to cover the cost. I just think for as long as EA and 2K have been making games that they haven't come close to the real time contextual commentary that covers a myriad of stats, unique individual personal things with in a franchise that SCEA SD has done. SCEA SD audio team has surpassed upon something we have all thought to be the price of admission, dull mundane repeatative commentary.

    What the hell are they doing, that is so drastically different from the other studios? I can safely say I thought we as gamers would have never gotten this close to a live broadcast, just check the little things thread to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

    Since sony has been so open to helping other studios to get up to par on the PS3 via development techniques the next step should be how to exploit 10gigs of audio and beyond.

    It's just above and beyond what any other game out there has been able to accomplish. I think it's a combination of things, Matt V's willingness to go in to the studio, his years of doing the commentary for the game, he keeps adding to an already large commentary database and last but not least, the audio guys from Sony, they just get what good commentary is about, there are barely any repetition throughout the course of a game, unlike the rest of the competition.

      Yes....it's practically seamless...it really is almost unbelievable that this is just a game!
      Yeah..once in while there is a mistake....but when you realize just how difficult it must be to program some of this stuff...it really is quite amazing just how well it is done.

        I don't think any other game will feature the commentary of The Show. If I'm not mistaken, commentary takes a HUGE amount of disc space. The Show doesn't have to worry about scaling down or making their commentary compatible for the 360. No developer in their right mind is going to give the 360 a game with inferior features.

          As much as I'd love to see it, you won't have similar commentary because of the limitations of the 360.

            I wouldn't mind seeing Ask Kolbe in Madden 09. He must know more about the pigskin game than the guy who's name graces the EA NFL game does.

              I'm pretty sure that The Show is allowed more freedom in what they do with the commentary because of its exclusivity to the PS3. Uncompressed audio takes up a ton of space so having blu-ray helps a lot.

              Which sort of sucks for sports studios developing for both consoles. Sure they could try and take advantage of the space on a blu-ray, but what about the 360? You'll have the same game with different commentary.

              That, and the fact that most sports games are developed on the 360 first and then move on to the ps3 takes all hope away (at least for now).

                So basically you guys are saying that we are stuck with the same commentary system since 1999, because none of these sports companies aren't willing to take a chance and alienate a group of gamers?

                Well then how do we advance past the look and sound of what we have now? They can't pack on the textures and they can't give us enough commentary, what gives. Well its time to switch lead platforms then, so the games can progress streaming textures and uncompressed audio and next year or later this year PS3 games moves to 50gigabytes.

                  I don't think it has a lot to do with the fact that the 360 limits what developers can include. Even the PS2 version's commentary is outstanding. Clearly, other developers are just lazy when it comes to the commentary and presentation (especially EA).

                    Even that's not a perfect solution, however, because the spin times of the BluRay format are limited, almost requiring certain games to be installed. That's not a perfect solution either.

                      Works great on Uncharted and it doesn't install on your HDD, that game streams textures and it has virtually no load times and besides blu ray seeks info in an entirely different way than regular dvd's making its seek times sufficiently better, in most reports a 2x blu ray drive is for the most part on par with an 8x to 12x speed dvd because it seeks info differently. Thats an old myth that has been put to bed a long time ago and proven by Naught Dog when you build the correct engine to take advantage of the hardware.

                        I remember when NFL2K5 took a chance here, developed the game on XBOX, and then ported over to PS2. Unfortunely, I think that will be the exception and not the norm.

                        I mean, why would it makes sense for MLB2K8 to do that when it's base comes from the 360.
