    how does scouting work?

i didn't really assign scouting targets until around the 40th game of my first year in franchise (i thought all i was supposed to do was hire the scouts). anyway, i assigned scouting targets for the different regions and when i first checked back there was no information. now, at about the all-star break, i check back and there's a little bit of info on every guy targeted.

so am i going to get any more info outside of 'liability at his position. could be a solid releiver in the pros' if i do not change scout focus or is that the most i am going to get and therefore should start scouting other players?

    thanks in advance.

    Re: how does scouting work?

assigning your scouts to prospects before the first games are played is usually a good idea, and since not everybody you see will be in the draft pool the reports your scouts get you will carry over to the next season.

as you see, scouts are rated in finding starters, relievers, infielders and outfielders. the higher they're rated in these areas, the faster you'll get a full report on the prospects (6 lines, five are where he's at now and the other's where he's projected to be. the balls by each player work like NCAA's stars, 4 balls is great, 3 balls is pretty good, 2 balls is okay, 1 ball isn't worth the price of admission)

when the draft comes, look for a gray box with a bullseye, these players are some of the ones you scouted. the others (marked with the standard rookie icon), although you'll see their rating bars you won't see their scouting reports during the draft.

my main tips are, start scouting ASAP, it'll pay off the next few seasons...and remember what positions your scouts have eyes for, for instance if you find you're gonna need a first baseman down the road, get a good infield scout.

          thanks d.

i guess i'm still a little confused about how long i should keep a scout focused on a certain player. will the information on the player change after the bullseye icon appears? my first set of scouting targets all have the bullseye icon so i took each scout's focus off the original set and started looking at another set of players. should i have waited longer so that more information could be generated on the original set (right now, i have 2 to 3 lines per target)?

                Re: how does scouting work?

basically, if you see a full report (6 lines of info) then the scout's gotten all the info on the kid. less, and he's not done yet, although three or four notes may suffice. the target basically means you know SOMETHING, the more the better.
forgot to mention that as you may have seen, there are five-ball prospects...they're rare, i typically see one in a given region, sometimes none. usually they're gonna get glowing (or as glowing as you'll get that young) reports ending with that damndest of labels...Can't Miss.

                      ok, i got ya.

i think i might have moved my scouts' targets a bit too soon. i'll have to take a look at that and determine who i want my scouts to spend a lot of time on to get a full report.

thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!!
