Struggling to hit the ball (anyone have tips?)

I just picked up the game this afternoon and I am really enjoying it. The only problem I am having as far as gameplay goes is connecting for base hits. I have no problem making contact with the ball, but I rarely make good enough contact for a base hit.

Anyone have any pointers for a MVP series newcomer?

Having a heck of a time with it myself brewcity. I just started concentrating on using the left stick up or down depending on where it's pitched. Not so much on exact location and trying to hit 'em out. I'm getting a little better using that approach. Still have only hit one bomb though.

The only thing I can really suggest is to be patient and show some discipline at the plate. Wait for a pitch that you like for the particular hitter and when you get it (or something else that you like.) go ahead and let loose.

I'm having a tough time with that, though. I wanna swing away all the time.

You might also try playing the Batting mini-game for a while. I think it's a little easier to hit in there than in the real game, but it'll be a decent primer on timing anyhow.

I am also swinging away at a lot of pitches. I think my biggest difficulty is mastering the transition of going from being a longtime High Heat player to playing a different baseball game. The hitting mechanics seem a lot different in MVP.

Its really hard to hit online as well. No one ever throws strikes. I try to be patient but sometimes you just don't have time to react once you realize its a strike. I have played 3 games online so far and both have gone extra innings and only 1 run was scored in each game. My second game went 17 innnings. It seemed almost impossible to hit a Randy Johnson slider. The hitting does seem a lot harder than last years game.

Also too, it is very much different for high heat in that it is JUST timing based. The left analog stick controls how you WANT to hit the ball. the left/right/up/down placements control the angle of the bat, not the position of the bat in the strikezone.

Yeah, it is kind of hard to describe the hitting. I still usually swing like High Heat and most of the time you will get decent contact if you hit like it is zone hitting. If it is low and away, pushing down and away will make solid contact to opposite field. Just keep practicing and you will have it down in no time.
