i play man d on the player that has the worst jumper on the court. usually the center/power forward that way i can cut out back cuts & back picks.
i hardly ever guard the PG or SG because of how many picks they use & depending on my court position, the cpu defensive help may not come in time. the cpu help d is better when the cpu guards on-ball because it knows exactly where the help should rotate from.
i also play d like a team should in real life. if i have a weak defenders on good scorers, i double them to get the ball out of their hands & make others beat me. (otherwise i get torched by the stars)
if i have good on-ball defenders i take my chances one on one & sometimes the stars are just gonna be stars.
i find the game to be a lot like real life. example: if i start out a game doubling a scorer and harrassing him until he goes cold, i have a better chance of containing him... but of course if he keeps shooting & hits a few, he will be right back in his groove.
hope this helps... gonna post this in a thread to see how others play d. maybe you can get some insight from there as well.
