How important is being 'online' for 2K13?

I have always been (and will continue to be) a single player gamer. Mostly that have previously meant being strictly offline.

Now I read that online is a huge component of the game in terms of earning VC for other in game purchases. But does 'online' in this sense mean having to play against other users?

If by strictly playing single player (association and myplayer) is going to preclude me from achieving VC or meaning I have to grind ALOT more just to get VC and make improvements, then that may seriously diminish my enjoyment of the game.

For example, will I need to play 50 games offline/single player with MyPlayer to even get him up to a mid-70s rating vs playing 20 games online against other people which would yield higher VC and mean that myplayer will improve faster?

Thanks for any advice on this. I'm sitting on the fence of whether to purchase this game this year or now. Right now it's looking like the first NBA 2K game I skip since NBA 2K7.

That would be the biggest mistake of your life.
    Lineup:
    PG) Gary Payton
    SG) '95-'96 Michael Jordan
    SF) Sapphire Scottie Pippen
    PF) '95-'96 Dennis Rodman
    C) Hakeem Olajuwon

Unfortunately my time is limited with work and family commitments, so I have to prioritize which games to play (and in a way get maximum enjoyment and outcome from those limited play sessions). That's why I asked whether online is essentially or whether I would need to play twice as much offline/single-player to achieve the same level of progression. I frankly don't have the time for that.

2K13 from all accounts is a brilliant game, but it seems geared towards VC and online modes more than ever before.

Oh, and talking about biggest mistakes.......not buying 2K13 would rank far behind the mistake I once made of dating a girl who turned into a stalker!

Bro isn't that the worst. I made the same mistake 2 years ago with this girl, worst mistake ever. I'd be driving around town after we broke up and would run in to her so often that I started thinking this can't be a coincidence. At bars, the grocery store, library, book store, gym.I was leaving the house one night and her car was literally parked down the street, with her sitting with binoculars peepin at my house. Horrifying experience. This lasted a good 5 months, before she moved to a different state.

For those that are used to playing on All-Star and above, don't be afraid to give these a shot and see if they are for you.

Ouch. I feel for you bro. It's certainly one tough situation. I used to get excessive text messaging........once i left my phone alone and had about 50 messages in the morning......and the emotional range of those messages were staggering.
Although in hindsight I was partly to blame. I couldn't resist sometimes. The crazier she got the more 'adventurous'.......and i'm a weak weak man.

Here's the thing: You don't need to actually play other people online head to head. I personally don't have xbox live gold and CAN'T play people at the moment, but as long as I have an internet connection while I play MyCareer, I will earn VC and be able to spend the VC I earn from other modes on my player.

VERY important: If you chose to play MyCareer offline, you will earn skill points instead. This means you can't use the VC you earn in MyTeam, quick games, ect...on your player, which would REALLY suck. It's really difficult to earn VC in MyCareer alone to be honest. Some guy here got a triple double and only earned 250 VC, and that's including the milestones he accomplished. Your earnings double if you play key games, but it's still pretty low.

So basically, you do probably should have an internet connection while playing, but playing head to head vs other people isn't necessary and you can still earn VC without doing that and get a good my player somewhat quickly. I haven't played a game yet due to the freezing issue and I am at 67 overall with 2 signature skills.

You also lose out on a new game mode, My Team. It's not that big of a loss, but it's something new that they added and would be neat to try one day.

Just a heads up, you can still play offline exhibition games in MyTeam. You still need internet connection for that though(unless im mistaken)because VC/player values are not stored on a server.

I tried to see if it would let you, it says you need to be signed in on Xbox Live to play.

I'm strictly an offline player so let me see if I understand this correctly.

In order to get the best out of myplayer it is advisable to be online? But if I don't play myplayer and instead only play association, it matters little if I am online?

You get the same from your My Player whether it's offline or online. You'll be using skill points instead of virtual currency. You can skill but sigs, upgrade your My Player, just can't dress him up for online play.

For association, it doesn't matter whether it's offline or online. No benefits from being online.

Yeah, that's why I said he needed an internet connection to play it. By "offline" I just meant vs. the CPU, and not a real person.

@ggsimmonds: The advantage to being online in MyCareer is that you can use VC you earn from other modes to upgrade your player.

To me? It's not important in the slightest.

Maybe for roster updates, but that's about it. I spend all my time playing quick match and season with legends, don't touch the rest of the game. Online is a wasteland for cheaters and scrubs in this game, best avoided at all costs.
