Re: Decide the Future with LeBron James in NBA 2K14 Path to Greatness Mode

Ok, so let’s talk Path to Greatness. We’ve known the mode existed since 2K14's announcement, but we never knew what was actually in it. So we ask Rob Jones to tell us a little about it. “Well, we’ve done Jordan, and we’ve done the other greats, so when we brought in LeBron--and you look at all the things he’s achieved--we needed to create a real story around him; to take advantage of having such a super-star on the cover of the game. So this is a play from us to imagine ‘what will LeBron be like in the next 5-6 years’.
What does that mean in practice? Jones explains: “The mode will create scenarios that revolve around his ascent to become one of the all-time greats in the NBA. It’s a storyline mode. It’s a way for us to cater for people who just want to navigate through a mode. Maybe you don’t want to play a full season, do general manager stuff, or go online--this is for you.”
“It is tough to avoid turning LeBron into a cheat player, but the ones that are harder are guys who--from a video game standpoint--perform at an incredibly high level,” continues Jones. “It’s the JR Smiths and Jamal Crawfords of the world. When you watch them in a real game, they’re never playing 40 minutes; and there’s a reason for that. They don’t play much defense, they’re not involved in certain aspects of the game, they don’t always do what the coach asks them to do: but in those 15 or so minutes that they come in, they’re pouring out shots like no-one else. Those are the guys who are toughest for us because you want to represent their skill, but it’s hard to simulate the stuff that they don’t do well in a video game.”

Re: Decide the Future with LeBron James in NBA 2K14 Path to Greatness Mode

Hmm, I was expecting actual details on the mode itself. There still seems to be the same information there's been all along: play LeBron James into the future, accomplish things. I suppose the loose suggestion of a story line and not necessarily having to play a full season is new.

From what's been divulged so far, I remain a little disappointed with this mode. I thought there would have been a lot more potential if it were about shaping LeBron's entire career. Re-play notable games from his past ('07 Pistons, '04 Nuggets, '06 Wizards, '10 Playoffs, re-do the decision, '11 Finals), then progress the LeBron you've essentially created on into the future. That would have felt a lot more unique, realistic and personal.

This is pretty much taking the easy route or lazy route, whatever you want to call it but like others have stated why not have a Lebron mode like they did with Jordan and play key games he played during his career, I mean Lebron is already great so the Path to Greatness theme is a lil too late. Maybe it would be a lil more interesing if Lebron was still chasing a championship ring but he has two of those already so this mode seems pretty pointless.

Re: Decide the Future with LeBron James in NBA 2K14 Path to Greatness Mode

Da_Czar said that in his opinion, this mode would not be a mode that the community was enthusiastic for.

Once again, Da_Czar's analysis was right on the money.

With that being said, I can see how this type of "story-mode" would appeal to some. I really enjoy playing full seasons in Association and MyCareer but it seems like every other day I see a person complaining that they "have" to play more games then they want to.

It also might be a one-and-done mode for some of us that just want to complete achievements or who are completionists.

What would be sad is if they recycle the magazine covers and such from the other modes instead of making a complete set of new endorsements and features. Hopefully they will not do so.

I actually am pretty disappointed by this news. Was really hoping for a similar mode as the Jordan challenge from 2k11. Feel like they dropped the ball on this. Would have been incredible to play his past greatest games. As well as giving us more recent classic teams. The 2007 Pistons, 08 Celtics, could have done the 2006 champion Heat and do a head to head vs Wade thing. 2009 Magic, could do 2004 Nuggets vs Melo, 2011 Bulls, 2012 Celtics. Also so far I don't feel like they are rea capitalizing on LeBron being on the cover. What about having the LeBrons from his web series playable in blacktop?

Probably will not touch this mode at all, but there are so many Heat fans I can see a few people trying this out. The good thing I like about this article is they recognize that some of the issues representing the "video game" NBA players in 2K and J.R. Smith, Crawford. J.R. Smith has been a beast in 2K as far as I can remember. What they need is negative signature skills such as streaky shooter or tone down the consistency of some of these players when they play longer minutes. Make the guys who make bad decisions prone to turnovers or commit bad fouls.

I had the same thought. I'm glad they get the JR Smith and Crawford problem. I made the same comment a couple weeks ago.

I think it would have been a ripe opportunity to add more player personality sig skills, like Offensive and Defensive Sparkplug that give momentum or consistency boosts to that end of their game when the player first comes off the bench but wears out after awhile.

It would also allow them to stop overrating these guys and giving them 40 mpg all-star player level ratings.

But this is not always the case w/ these guys... sometimes they come into the game flat and don't bring that needed _____.

                      Just keep their consistency low.

I don't watch them game to game so are they flat as often as they're hot? If so, low consistency and the Microwave or Heat Retention sig skill should be enough it seems.

If they are regularly good in limited minutes with some bad performances, a Sparkplug sig skill might be more appropriate.

I do think we need more skills like that regardless.

j.r. his entire career has run hot or cold. literally, he'll play well for a week or 2 then play bad for another month. The end of the season leading up to the playoffs was a good example of that. Played well the end of the season, then disapeared come playoffs.

Well, it's a good thing we have dynamic cold/hot streaks this year. I just hope he has an appropriate base rating that represents his average.

The preorder info said that it would come with extra content for PTG mode.

                              So...WHAT IS THAT CONTENT?
