Georgia Tech

#19 Clint Castleberry- Played one year of college football. Was the first freshmen to finish in the top 3 in the Heisman. Quit playing college ball because he went to fight in WWII where he was killed in action. R.I.P. Clint!

Tim Tebow is one the greatest players to ever play college football, let alone being one of the greatest college QB's ever.

I believe it was Vince Dooley, Vince f*cking Dooley who said " Its hard, but I'd put Herchel Number 1 A and Tebow number 1 B."

Whether you love 'um or hate 'um, there is no denying greatness.

Re: Official Retired Numbers thread

USC Trojans:
3- Carson Palmer
5- Reggie Bush
11- Matt Leinart
12- Charles White
20- Mike Garrett
32- O.J. Simpson
33- Marcus Allen

All numbers were retired upon these players winning a Heisman Trophy, or their playing careers were completed (Bush and Leinart). The only number recently reissued was 20 to Darnell Bing, he received permission from USC AD Mike Garrett to use the number because this was also Bing's high school number.

Re: Official Retired Numbers thread

Purdue doesn't have any numbers retired but they should retire a couple.

12-Bob Griese (College and NFL HOF, SB MVP)
26-Rod Woodson (NFL HOF)
40-Mike Alstott (Purdue's all-time leading rusher)
16-Len Dawson (NFL HOF, SB MVP)
15-Drew Brees (Likely College and NFL HOF, SB MVP, Big Ten leader in most passing categories even 10 years after he left)

Re: Official Retired Numbers thread

As per Wikipedia:

Notre Dame Fighting Irish is one of the few college programs that does not retire jersey numbers. Upon being issued a number, each player is given a card which lists some of the more famous players who have worn that particular number. Number 3 is perhaps the most famous number in Irish football history, having been worn by Ralph Guglielmi, George Izo, Daryle Lamonica, Coley O'Brien, Joe Montana, Rick Mirer, Ron Powlus, and Darius Walker, among others. It is currently worn by wide receiver Michael Floyd.

Number 5 is also notable, as it is the only number to be worn by one of the Four Horsemen (Elmer Layden), a Heisman Trophy winner (Paul Hornung), and a national championship-winning quarterback (Terry Hanratty). Number 7 has been worn by such Irish greats as 1964 Heisman Trophy winner John Huarte, 1970 Heisman runner-up Joe Theismann, Steve Beuerlein, and Jarious Jackson. It has most recently been worn by quarterback Jimmy Clausen.

Re: Official Retired Numbers thread

Dude that's pretty awesome. I would hate for the coach to hand me #3 and a card with Joe Montana's name staring up at me. That is so much pressure. Realizing that if you're a QB, you're expected to play like a National Championship winner and 4-time Super Bowl champ. High expectations, I'd say. But that is the best way for a player to learn about your team's tradition.
