Re: Max Wolters | FIFA Coaching Career

Premier League
Week 9
QPR v Middlesbrough

Pre-Match
This is the first time Max Wolters has faced Middlesbrough in his short career. QPR come into this match winning 2 straight and having the best defense in the league, only allowing 3 goals in the first 8 matches. Middlesbrough come in as the opposite of QPR, losing 4 straight and scoring the fewest goals in the league(6).

Match
Middlesbrough jumped ahead early with a 12' goal by De Sart coming from 16 yards out. The QPR attack was missing for the first 65', only recording 3 shots on target until Wolters changed to a 5-3-2 formation with Iheanacho and Adams up top. The new formation worked for creating chances as the R's pressured the defense for the remaining 20' but could not find a way into the net. The best chance came in the 63' and 65' as Iheanacho and Kaja both hit the post.
Final: 0-1 Middlesbrough

Post Match Notes
"These are the matches we cannot afford to lose if we want to have a successful season. Losing to the big clubs is bad but losing to the clubs who we are battling for mid to lower table position is terrible. We need to find a way to improve our attack. Change formation, change lineups. Something must be done." Wolters had more questions than answers after this match as QPR fall to 4-2-3 and 7th in the table.

QPR still hold the best defense in the league but are quickly falling down to the worst offense as well. Scoring only 7 goals in the first 9 matches. A major decline compared to the team that ran wild in the Championship only a season ago.

The good news for QPR is that Josh Onomah has returned from injury and should be available sometime next week. Onomah is still on loan at QPR until January from his one year loan from Spurs. Wolters has been pushing the board to make the transfer permanent but QPR and Tottenham have not been able to reach a fee at this time.

Next for a QPR is a London trip to Crystal Palace.

Re: Max Wolters | FIFA Coaching Career

Premier League
Week 10
Crystal Palace v Queens Park Rangers

Pre-Match
The 3rd London Derby of the season for QPR as they drew 0-0 vs Tottenham and Chelsea earlier in the year. After the match last week Wolters said changes would be coming to try and create more chances in attack for QPR. The changes he was referring to are shown are the team sheet this week as QPR come out in a 4-3-3 formation instead of the normal 5 at the back. Some old faces are back in the lineup also as Sylla and Mackie each get the start today.

Match
Three comebacks in one match for Crystal Palace as QPR fans are left scratching their heads after this one. A match QPR dominated for 90% of the game but still didn't come away with 3 points. Sylla scored first in the 23' but Palace responded in the 27'. Mackie then put the R's on top in the 64' but again Palace responded 3 minutes later in the 67'. QPR fans went wild when Adegbenro looked to score the winner in the 88' but the joy was soon erased as Schlupp scored off a corner in the 91' to come even again with only a minute left to play.
Final: 3-3 Draw

Post Match Notes
"The attack was much better in this match but the defense was too laid back. We need to find a good middle ground with attack and defense but I am much happier with the way we played today than last week. If we can keep this up, results will go our way."

Mackie and Sylla scored in the same match for QPR for the first time since the league title clinching victory last season.

QPR drop to 10th in the table with 15pts through 10 matches. Tottenham and West Ham are at the top with 19pts followed by Chelsea, Watford, Man City and Stoke with 18pts each.

Next match: Home vs Leicester City

Re: Max Wolters | FIFA Coaching Career

Premier League
Week 11
Queens Park Rangers v Leicester City

Pre-Match
Leicester City come to London sitting 10th in the table, just 1pt ahead of QPR.

Match
Leicester came out in a 4-4-2 sitting back and letting QPR control the tempo. All the passing back and forth eventually got to the R’s as Luongo misplayed a pass that was intercepted by Huth. Huth played a long ball through to Ndidi who out ran the backline and scored an easy one on one goal. Iheanacho scored off a corner using his head to bring it back to 1-1 just before half but ended up missing a penalty chance early in the 2nd half that would come back to cost QPR. Luongo scored in the 83’ that looked to give the R’s the 3pts but then it was Vardy time as Leicester scored in the 88’ from outside the box.
Final: 2-2 Draw

Post Match Notes
"We have to learn how to keep a lead. It is becoming very predictable that whenever we take the lead, we let up and allow a goal and let the opposition right back in it. This is something we must address and must stay focused minutes after scoring."

QPR stay 11th in the table.
Next match: Away vs Stoke City (7-0-4 4th in table)

Re: Max Wolters | FIFA Coaching Career

Premier League
Week 12
Stoke City v Queens Park Rangers

Pre-Match
QPR travel to Stoke City who are sitting 4th in the table. QPR are 11th and 8pts behind Stoke. The surprising thing about Stoke City is that they are the lowest scoring team in the league but are still in the top 4 while QPR have one of the league’s best defenses and are outside the top 10.

Match
Wolters mixed it up this match using Iheanacho and Adams up top instead of the normal Iheanacho and Sylla. Hoping the speed of Adams would bring a good balance to the mix and it quickly paid off as Adams scored his first goal of the season coming off a low cross by Iheanacho who passed up a chance to score himself to give his teammate the easier goal. Stoke drew even in the 16’ following a penalty by Hall that Arnautovic converted. Two minutes later QPR when back on top when Samual shot from distance and hit the post, the ball bounced back off the rear end of Butland and into the net. But like we have seen multiple times this season already, QPR were not able to hold a lead. Leading 2-1 from the 18’ to the 69’ until Shaqiri curved a free kick into the top corner to bring the score level.
Final: 2-2 Draw

Post Match Notes
"I stood here 4 days ago and said we need to work on holding leads. And here we are again blowing a lead for the 2nd match in a row and the 4th time this season already. Change those draws into wins and we are close to a top 4 side. Frustrating. Very frustrating.”

Top 10 table

1. Stoke City – 25pts
2. Liverpool – 23pts
3. Watford – 23pts
4. West Ham – 23pts
5. Tottenham – 23pts
6. Man Utd – 22pts
7. Man City – 22pts
8. Leicester City – 21pts
9. Chelsea – 20pts
10. QPR – 17pts

Re: Max Wolters | FIFA Coaching Career

Premier League

Week 13

Queens Park Rangers v Southampton

Pre-Match

Southampton come to London still trying to figure themselves out as they have a 4-4-4 record and are sitting 14th in the table. QPR are also in a struggle as they cannot move out of the 9-11 spots.

Match

The main concern for QPR was the front 3 of Southampton who have the Saints up to 4th in the league in scoring. For the first 75' of the match, the R's defense held tight and kept the score 1-1 following goals from Long and Luongo. But, like so many times this season already, the QPR defense lost concentration late in the match and the R's let in a 2nd goal in the 80'. This time it was Reed who came up with the winning goal to leave fans of the London side frustrated and confused to why this keeps happening.

Final: 1-2 Loss

Post Match

Reporter: "Coach, this is 5 matches in a row without a win. What can you do to turn this around?"
Wolters: "Hold a lead. Simple as that really. 5 matches without a win, I don't know the exact number but I'd say at least 3 of those we blew the lead."
Reporter: "Is there one thing that is leading to these blown leads?"
Wolters: "Yes, yes there is."
Reporter: "Can you explain?"
Wolters: "No, we know what we have to correct and I'm not going to share it with the public so everyone will know our future game plans. That is all for now. Thank you."

Re: Max Wolters | FIFA Coaching Career

Simulated Week
Week 14 at West Ham (6-5-2 5th in table)
1-1 draw with goals coming from Adegbenro and a late penalty goal by Lanzini. The draw saw QPR move down 1 spot in the standings to 12th place. Wolters also received a warning via email from the board saying they are not happy with the way the Youth Academy has been developing lately.

Week 15 vs Everton (5-6-3, 11th in table)
A rare win for QPR, their first in 7 matches as they held on for a 2-1 win after going up 2-0 in the first 20' with goals by Fosu-Mensah and Che Adams. Everton scored in the 88' to take the clean sheet away. QPR's keeper, Smithies, left this match early with an injury that will sideline him for the next 6 weeks.

Week 16 vs Arsenal (2-6-7, 17th in table)
QPR go up against a London rival who is struggling this season. But in a derby anything can happen and that is what happened as Arsenal pull out the 0-1 win led by Oxlaide-Chamberlein's 7' goal.
QPR move to 11th in the table and are 9pts off the leader.

Week 17 at West Brom (2-4-10, 19th in table)
West Brom jumped ahead in the 1' with a goal by Braithwaite and added another in the 35' when Defoe scored to go into the half with the lead. A 65' goal made it 3-0 and completed the domination by the Baggies at QPR fell to a team in the bottom of the table for the 2nd week in a row.

Due to FA cup scheduling, QPR play in only 2 days as they face Manchester City. City ran all over QPR in the EFL cup earlier this season, winning 3-0.

Re: Max Wolters | FIFA Coaching Career

Premier League
Week 18 vs Manchester City (8-5-4, 7th in table)

Max Wolters leads his team against Pep and Man City for the 2nd time this season. The last time was a forgettable match for the R's as City ran all over them. Going into this match Wolters has been very vocal about a scheduling change that has QPR playing 2 matches in 3 days. This being the 2nd match has the QPR lineup filled with backup players and players making their season debuts.
In a shocking turn of events, QPR managed to pull out the 2-1 victory with a 91' goal by Josh Onomah who returned from a year long injury only 2 days prior to the match. Da Silva Lopes scored first for QPR as he controlled midfield and won MOTM as the QPR ban of misfits pulled out a miracle win on Christmas day.

Result: 2-1 Win

Post match interview

Reporter: "Merry Christmas to QPR fans everywhere!"
Wolters: "haha yes, yes. What a time for a miracle win. Christmas day, something I'm sure many fans will not forget for years to come."
Reporter: "You have been very vocal publicly about the scheduling. How was the club able to respond positively and get the win here tonight?"
Wolters: "We are a deep club. I was upset with the FA for the timing of the announcement of the schedule change, only a weeks notice did not give us much time to plan. But coming into today I was confident in the group. Da Silva Lopes scoring his first QPR goal was exciting. Shodipo was key in setting that goal up and Josh Onomah, having him back from his injury was huge. Everyone stepped up today and it showed with the result."
Reporter: "Speaking of Onomah, his loan ends soon as it was a 1 year loan that started last Jan. Any word on his future?"
Wolters: "I want him here. We are doing everything we can but of course it is difficult when his club does not want to sell him. Understandable of course as he is a great talent and very young. At the very least I hope we can extend his loan to finish this season and then go back to discussing his future at that point."

Re: Max Wolters | FIFA Coaching Career

Premier League
Week 19
Liverpoolv Queens Park Rangers

Pre-Match
The crazy Christmas week is in full swing as QPR go to Anfield for their 3rd match in a week with another match only 3 days later. Liverpool are the top scoring side in the league, which comes as no surprise to anyone who watches. QPR have been solid defensively but with a few key players resting this match, things could become shaky in the back.

Match
QPR got off to a great start putting pressure on Liverpool and keeping the ball in the attacking half. Liverpool were lucky a few times to avoid giving up a goal but were able to clear every attempt from the R's in the first 18'. Liverpool finally had a chance in the 19' and they capitalized as Kevin Stewart received a very lucky bounce off a QPR clearance and had an easy tap in.
A penalty shout in favor of QPR was denied in the 34' which left Wolters steaming on the sideline. But QPR were able to draw level a minute before the break when Isak Ssweankambo scored his first goal for the R's off a corner.
2nd half was all Liverpool, the relentless attack finally broke QPR down. Coutinho and Ings scored to make the score 3-1 before Josh Onomah made a beautiful run and finished it was a tap in to bring it 3-2. Wolters took over a midfield defender to bring on another attacker to try bringing the score even but Liverpool again scored on a counter in the 89' to make it 4-2 and put the game away. The final goal coming from Roberto Firmino.
Final: 4-2 Loss

Post Match Interview
Reporter: "The score line will show Liverpool won easily but that wasn't the case, was it?"
Wolters: "No, not at all. For long periods in this match I thought we were the better side. But they were able to score on every chance they had while we were not able to finish today."
Reporter: "In the first half Onomah was brought down at the edge of the box. A free kick was given but you thought it should have been a penalty?"
Wolters: "From my point of view it looked like the contact started inside the box. It is a strange case as Josh was moving away from goal so he fell out of the box. But I believe the initial contact was inside the penalty area. No good thinking about it now but it is frustrating when you are fighting so hard and have a big chance not go your way."
Reporter: "Things do not get any easier from here as you go to Man City in 2 days. How will the players react?"
Wolters: "I think this might be a time where it is good to play again so quickly. Players are upset with the result and want to prove that they are better than this. City played today also so fatigue cannot be an excuse for either side."
