MLB 14 The Show - Top 9 Players at Each Position

Check out the top 9 players at each position in MLB 14 The Show (all subject to change before official release on April 1st). A big thanks to NYYanks26, who has confirmed with us that he already has the game and sent us the screenshots.

Alex Rodriguez starts of in Triple-A.

Let the debate begin!

Don't see very many 99 overall players.

Edit: Actually, only 3 of them.

I'm not sold that Beltran is the best RF in the game. I think by season's end, he will regress.

I didn't see very many 90 + guys in general.

Totally agree with what you said about Beltran

i love that many 90's. Going to have to go off vitals more and just not OVR. I hate when games every team is loaded with 90's. Actually have to build team up by attributes and what best fits your team.

Guess that's just about 1 from each team, sorry Astros. Down from last year, they changed the rating system didn't they? What exactly did they do?

Looks pretty good to me. Puig might be a little high, Heyward should be a RF.

The three 99s they chose couldn't be any better.

Re: MLB The Show 14 - Top 9 Players at Each Position

The ratings look good. It seems they changed the ratings, which to me is good thing considering that MLB !3 lot of guys in later seasons in franchise would have not great stats and still be rated 99. Plus I see the contracts and a lot big names are signed to contracts longer than year. It drove me crazy when I had resign 90 percent of the team in year one every time I did new franchise.

LOL@ Bourn being rated the 7th best CF in baseball.

MLB The Show has really nice visuals, and for the most part, really nice sim gameplay, but they need a heavy dosage of 21st century sabermetric-findings and general modern baseball research injected into their games.

I wanna say The Shredder on MLB Network rated Bourn 8 or 9 overall CF.

I like the discrepancy in ratings - now any player that is 90+ is truly considered "elite."

Heyward is the Braves' default CF? Guess The Show has given up on BJ Upton too. Wonder who they have in the Braves RF?

James/Hamilton had him 8/10 on their list but he was not to be found in the shredder's list.

Nah, Brian_SCEA really impressed me with his knowledge and implementation of saber-inclined translations into this current iteration. Unless you think sabermetrics is just stats and not actually an economic study...

This is from his explanation of updating the CPU plate discipline logic:

It's important that if you decide to throw more strikes (maybe it's a blowout and you're saving your bullpen for next game), that the CPU hitter gets a hitting advantage in exchange for an increase in strikeouts and decrease in walks. Same vice versa. This is as important as for things to be right on average.

LOL @ A-Rod being in the top 7 of anything other than "best magazine centerfolds."

How is Ryan Braun not in the Top 9 for RF? He'll be a Top 3 RF, if not the best RF irl.

Lovesports 03-25-2014 10:43 AM

Very good ratings, I like the lack of mid 90's guys. Makes for a more realistic representation

Braun is a forgotten about man. He paid the penalty for PED use. I think he should be near the top. He's been on fire this spring, showing he is still very talented.

SVCbearcat10 03-25-2014 10:59 AM

Also, I'm not sure how I feel about Cabrera being a 99 overall. Is he currently the best hitter on the face of the planet, absolutely! However, he is a liability on the field playing defense.

Even look at Trout... he has good speed, power, and range. However, he has an average arm at best (maybe below average for CF).

I know I'm knit-picking but I view a 99 as a great at everything. There is no position player today that is a 5 tool player. There are some that are close and deserve and 95 or 96 overall rating, but no 99s.

It's pretty laughable that A-Rod, Teixeira and Beltran are Top 10's in their respective positions.

#1. Hes on the cover.
#2. These #s are subject to change
#3. He is the most recent TC winner ALMOST 2 yrs in a row. And ratings are based off of the last 3 yrs.
#4. He is the best hitter in the game and his plate #s can over power is Def #s.
#5 Hes on the cover! ;)

Re: MLB The Show 14 - Top 9 Players at Each Position

Just an FYI these are the out of the box ratings. It wouldn't let me download the live roster, if ones even up yet. Maybe later in the week. And I will check Brauns rating later since like 3 people have asked.

Also Beltran is not a top 9 right fielder? Cmon why all the Beltran hate this year?!

HozAndMoose 03-25-2014 11:14 AM

Salvador Perez and Greg Holland should both be Top 3 at their positions.

Braun does not play RF easy to see why he's not up there because he plays LF

Servers usually arent up yet til release day.
IDT they will have a roster update til 4/7, but that could change with the late release date vs the date of Opening Day.

Don't disagree at all. Baseball may benefit from a two rating system with no overall rating; An offensive rating and defensive rating. That may make it easier to build your team because sometimes teams will specifically forgo offensive ability to have a great glove. That's why Simmons got called up for the Braves, even though he has some good power numbers. That's why the Tigers traded for Gonzalez at short. Then you could sort based on team needs to fill out a roster.

Servers aren't up but you can usually download the roster before release. I thought the other guy who posted yesterday was able to download a roster over the weekend but maybe I misunderstood.

All I saw was him ask Russell if there would be an update before next week...

I think it's mainly due to the NY on his hat this year....the hate I mean.

For me, it's not because he's a Yankee. It's because he is 36 years old, you just don't see people that age be the best player at their position. Beltran has always been a very good player, but never seemed to reach elite status (and maybe that's because he played in KC & STL). Maybe it's not even a knock on Beltran but just the lack of quality RFs in the game today.

thetrueadrock 03-25-2014 12:02 PM

Re: MLB The Show 14 - Top 9 Players at Each Position

Beltran is definitely a top 9 RF. I would have thought his defense would have dropped him below a 90 OVR but the dude can still rake. Any plans to post pics of team lineups with the ratings visible? Pretty please? Cherry on top?

anchorsteamer 03-25-2014 12:05 PM

Gonna go ahead and be a homer: Posey is the #1 catcher. Someone at Sony needs to show their work.
