Crime Dog HOF?

Does Fred McGriff deserve to be in the HOF? He was my favorite player growing up. He put up good numbers, really until his last season.

So what do you say yes or no?

P.S. I am leaving juice talk out on purpose. He was never linked to it but that is not to say he wasn't cause no one really knows who did and didnt.

A career .284 hitter with 493 homers.

2490 hits and 1,550 RBI's.

Didn't win a MVP, but finished in the Top 10 in voting 6 times.

Never linked to steriods and has previously denied using them. I know that doesn't mean much, but McGriff's body size never reflected he was juicing.

I think he is Hall of Famer, but I was blown away that he only received 21.5% of the vote this year. If you compare McGriff's numbers to Andre Dawson or Jim Rice's numbers then McGriff belongs to be in Cooperstown.

I think you can even make a case for McGriff using Eddie Murray. Murray hit just 11 more homers McGriff despite the fact he played more than 500 more career games. Murray had a higher batting average by 3 points, but McGriff had a higher SLG, OPS, and OPS+.

Re: Crime Dog HOF?

Borderline but the way the whole landscape of players and the spectre of roids I think he eventually gets in.

Re: Crime Dog HOF?

To me McGriff should be in with no questions...the guy was a monster in the late 1980's and into the 1990's. He has the career numbers to back it up as well. I think his problem is two fold:

1) playing in the era he did a lot of other players put up better numbers...legit or not, those numbers make people over look his production.

2) He was so quiet. You never heard a peep out of the guy and he just came to work and did his job. Seriously, does anyone remember him putting up big numbers later in his career with Tampa Bay and Chicago? I mean, he was hitting .300/30/100 in his late 30's for some bad teams.
