Whats the most common send up of a minor leaguer? AAA,AA or A?

What constitutes a player that's been in the majors to be sent down all the way to A or double A?

What makes a minor leaguers jump from Double A to the majors?

Isn't Strasburg a Double a guy now? why not a Triple A before going into the majors with the Nationals?

Or do I have it wrong?

I'm no expert, but generally call ups are from AAA as usually that's where the best prospects are at. Strasburg is likely just in AA as it is his first year in the pros so it is a warm up for him. He won't spend much time there. But he's a couple steps ahead of most as usually first year players play in low A ball then graduate to high A fairly quickly (and then on to AA then AAA obviously.)

Usually a major leaguer only gets sent to a lower level than AAA if it is an injury rehab situation. They'll spend a little time at the lower levels so they still get some live action in but less strenuous. It does happen sometimes though were it isn't for rehab but just that there isn't room at the AAA level for the guy (I assume that is quite rare though.)

I'm sure some of the guys who pay attention to prospects and the minors can give a better answer than I can though.

I can chime in on the guy from the majors getting sent down to AA or A.

Dontrelle Willis was optioned down to A ball a year or two ago with the Tigers. They did this so he could take time get his head right, and fix mechanical issues. It also puts less pressure on him being down in A ball rather than being in AAA.

When Jeff Francouer was with the Braves they did the same thing except it was to AA. They sent him down there so he could hopefully fix his swing/mechanics, and I'm pretty sure he was close to the AA hitting coach so the Braves were hoping that relationship would make it easier for him.

So usually when a guy has been in the majors a few years and then really struggles, the team might send him to AA or A ball to take some pressure off of him and let him take his time fixing his mechanics and stuff.

You will see some guys get called up from Double A, but most of them come from Triple A. I can't think of anyone off my head that came up from Single A during a season.

Albert Pujols only played in High A ball and then made the Cardinals roster out of Spring Training the following season.

I would say Double-A is the common class where really talented minor league players jump from to get to the big leagues from after a call-up. Triple-A class is mainly reserved for "almost good enough but not quite" fringe big league players, and also serve as a temporary spot for certified big leaguers who are rehabbing and recovering from injury like wang_chi7 pointed out.

But AAA is generally where most guys are promoted from. It's extremely rare for a AA guy to get promoted straight to the majors. Even if a AA guy has the talent, most teams will promote him to AAA to at least experience the jump in talent level.

It must be remembered that though most washed up Major Leaguers or 4A guys stick in AAA for a long time, it's the league with the highest challenge before the majors.

Usually teams promote their prospects from AAA, either having played a whole season's worth or a substantial amount of games. This is usually where the team's best prepared prospects are, but not their top prospect at the moment (example, Padres in 2009 with Mat Latos and in 2010 with Donovan Tate).

Some players may be promoted directly if the team feels that AAA is not necessary for that player or if they have enough hype around the player that they believe that he may sell some tickets for the stadium. A final reason is that the team already tried out all their AAA players and have to look at AA for replacements (See 2002 Padres, when they called up Oliver Perez and Jake Peavy from AA in June).

He pitched in A ball the year before, but he made the team out of spring training last year.
