Do NBA players take the game seriously?

I'm sure some of you are wondering why I ask this question but it has been on my mind for a while now. Vince Carter and now the entire Raptors team are taking heat here in Toronto for being too loosey goosey. That is to say fans are complaining about the fraternizing on the court. They are complaining about players laughing in tense situations and rivals talking to each other as if they're playing a pickup game. Even the Raptors Radio PBP guy said last evening that he's never seen a sport where the players fraternize so much on the playing surface.

So the questions really are do players take the game seriously? Do you like the fact that players in the NBA seem to be TOO cordial to each other? Is this just a Raptors thing? (it very well could be)

I actually had a discussion about this topic with a co worker the other day.

I think in most part the players do take it seriously, I play for a few rec league teams, and while im friends with some people from the other teams, once you begin playing your competitive fire kicks up and there are nomore friends, however, you dont wish harm/injury on the opposing players in anyway.

Just because players are on different teams does not mean that they cannot fraternize with each other, its not as if teams are "gangs"

SPTO i'm guessing you're talking about Vince's chuckle with Shaq at the end of yesterday's game.I get ticked off too seeing Vince always laughing with either Ray Allen or Antawn Jamieson.There's nothing wrong with saluting your opponent before the game or congratulaitng him,but I hate seeing VC laugh and giggle after a tough loss like if nothing happened...Sometimes I think he misses game tying shots on purpose so he can go talk to his buds sooner after the game...

Carter is never gonna have Jordans fire or his hate for the other team when he's on the court, Vince is just a nice guy, too nice to be the player he could be.

an 82 game season with half the teams making the playoffs?? I wouldn't take hte game very seriously either.

A few players behavior is far from indicative of the rest of the players as a whole. Every player has a unique personality and reacts to losing/winning differently. Having a chuckle on the court is good, it's still a game and I wouldn't read to much into fraternizing with the competition as opposed to on the court play.

I don't players acting like they're on seperate games but I like to see some intesity on the court. Some guys just act like they're there to joke and play around. This is still a job that they're doing they should take things seriously sometimes.

I don't mind the fraternizing to a point but when it gets to be that they're acting like it's nothing important then it bugs me.

Interesting topic because I was just thinking about this last night. I was very happy with the way Steve Francis sort of acted last night after our loss @ the Lakers. He was visably upset at the end, with one of the most discouraged looks I seen of his face. He was intense last night and im glad to see that fire in him and I know how badly this guy wants to win.
