NFL reaches concussion settlement

Can someone post a link? My phone is not letting me.

$765 million (roughly $170K for each player).

Thoughts? I have strong feelings on this issue and will give my thoughts later.

Mods, sorry if there is a thread about this already. If there is, please delete.

I just want this discussion to be over so we can focus on football. Have these discussions internally.

No kidding. That amount of money is pocket change for the NFL, and they will never have to air their dirty laundry in court.

Re: NFL reaches concussion settlement

So I heard McNabb on FS1 talking about it and he says its great for the guys who need help now, but then he says something like I don't need help now, but who knows about the future.

What? You made millions of dollars, if you throw that money away and don't save any, then that is your fault. The guys like you don't need and shouldn't take $1 of this money.

Re: NFL reaches concussion settlement

It seems like the NFL paid money to get the problem out of the way but I don't think this issue will ever go away in terms of talking about the effects of concussions and what it does to the player long term.

At least the litigation aspect of it can go to bed now.

Re: NFL reaches concussion settlement

Looks like, at least right now, that I will play the contrarian role.

Football has always been a violent game. Mothers and fathers have been keeping their sons off of the field for that very reason for a long time.

I used to work with a former Redskins' offensive lineman who was a part of the Hogs. He thought going after the NFL was crap. He told me that he chose to play the game and he was well aware of the risks. This is a man who, at just 44, could not walk up a flight of stairs without experiencing pain. He never complained because he chose to play the game and put his body on the line. He told me a story where Reggie White rung his bell, and he knew "something wasn't right... But I didn't say much because I didn't want to come out of the game."

My opinion would likely be different had I not talked to him. He spoke about personal responsibility and accountability. I work in a prison. The pay is solid. The benefits are very good. The risks to my safety? Enormous. I choose to work here knowing those risks. If an inmate stabs me in the neck with a prison-made shank, I'm not suing. I understand the risks. I choose to work here. If I did sue, people would say, "But you chose to work there!"

Very valid point. I haven't followed this issue closely. Maybe I have much too simplistic of a view when there are many other factors at play here... I know concussions are a grave danger to these players but they know that. At the end of the day, I can't get away from that. They know the risks when they strap the helmet on.

I just wish personal responsible was more culpable in situations such as this.
