Re: Official NASCAR 2014 Moves And Updates

So who does everyone think will win the Cup this year? Here is my full Chase field;

Sweet Sixteen
Jimmie Johnson
Kyle Busch
Kurt Busch
Matt Kenseth
Clint Bowyer
Joey Logano
Brad Keselowski
Carl Edwards
Greg Biffle
Jeff Gordon
Kasey Kahne
Dale Jr
Kevin Harvick
Tony Stewart
Ryan Newman
Martin Truex Jr (My Dark Horse)

Final Four
Jimmie Johnson
Matt Kenseth
Kurt Busch
Kevin Harvick

Champ
Kevin Harvick

As for Nationwide and Trucks, I'm going with Regan Smith & Ryan Blaney. The truck field seems to be pretty weak this year. As for ARCA I'm guessing Kimmel locks up his 11th series championship, I was really pulling for him to win Daytona.

Glad I found the racing forums, huge race fan here looking forward to talking with all of ya'll!

Re: Official NASCAR 2014 Moves And Updates

The Day Everything Changed

Thirteen years ago Tuesday, everything changed.

On a sunny afternoon in Daytona Beach, Florida, NASCAR’s brightest star was extinguished when Dale Earnhardt, Sr. crashed to his death on the final lap of the Daytona 500.

Earnhardt’s passing was an unprecedented event in American sports; the equivalent of Michael Jordan landing on his head after a failed dunk and dying on the court during Game Seven of the NBA Finals. It shocked NASCAR Nation – and the nation as a whole – reminding us once again of the one undeniable truth of our sport. As long as men and women strap themselves into 3,000-pound objects at speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour, horrible things can – and will -- happen.

At the time of his death, Earnhardt enjoyed an incredible degree of popularity. He was a hero of the common man, more comfortable atop a bulldozer than in a corporate boardroom. He was not, however, universally beloved. Like Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip before him, he won too often to command that kind of unadulterated adoration.

That has changed in the last 13 years. Today, it’s hard to find anyone who admits being an Earnhardt *****, or booing him from the grandstands at Bristol Motor Speedway the night he put the bumper to Terry Labonte.

It’s like all those hand-lettered “Anybody But Earnhardt” signs never existed.

Earnhardt’s “Intimidator” persona – with compulsory shades and black hat -- was cunningly crafted, and richly deserved. Early in his career, he was decidedly rough around the edges, elbowing his way toward the front of the pack in cars that were often not up to the task. Some of us go back far enough to remember him pulling into Martinsville Speedway each spring; a greasy shirted, long-haired back marker wheeling a ragtag Late Model Sportsman equally devoid of sponsorship and speed.

Back then, it was impossible to imagine that this was a man who would change the sport one day. But change it, he did.

He eventually fought his way to the Winston Cup Series, wheeling a series of underfinanced entries for a string of what were then called “independent” owners. After a season littered with crashes and blown engines at the wheel of Richard Childress’ #3 Chevy, Childress suggested that Earnhardt vacate the seat and drive for rival car owner Bud Moore.

“We’re not ready for you yet,” explained Childress, a statement that translated roughly to “we can’t afford you.”

A year later, however, Earnhardt returned. Childress’ team had raised the competitive bar, and Earnhardt was a better driver, as well. Together, they forged a partnership that produced six NASCAR Winston Cup Series championships and made both men wealthy beyond their wildest dreams.

During the height of their run, Earnhardt set himself apart from the competition. On the track, he was the yardstick by which all others were measured. “If you can run with Earnhardt,” the experts said, “you can run with anyone.” And it was true.

Off the track, he exerted an equally high degree of influence. He was the “go to guy” for media members, confident enough to deliver a scathing opinion or a withering quote, to hell with the consequences. He could walk into the NASCAR trailer unannounced and unsolicited, offering pointed opinions to men named France who were otherwise not subject to unsolicited opinions.

Much has changed since Earnhardt’s ill-fated Chevrolet nosed into the Turn Four wall at Daytona that afternoon in 2001. And happily, some things have changed for the better.

High-tech containment seats have replaced the cobbled-together, no-visible-means-of-support units of Earnhardt’s day. Open-faced helmets have been jettisoned in favor of safer, more protective full-faced models built of carbon fiber and kevlar. NASCAR mandates larger greenhouses and impact-absorbing foam in driver’s doors. More attention is paid to seat belt installation, roll bar padding and cockpit construction. SAFER barriers now cushion the concrete walls that cost Earnhardt – and so many others – their lives.

There are drivers alive today who would not be walking the earth if Earnhardt had lived.

That’s a blunt statement, and little consolation to his family, friends and legions of fans. But Michael McDowell, Elliott Sadler and other will confirm that it’s absolutely true.

God bless you, Dale. And thank you.

Re: Official NASCAR 2014 Moves And Updates

Allen Bestwick has agreed to a new multi-year deal with ESPN to become lap-by-lap announcer for ABC’s telecasts of the IndyCar Series, including the Indianapolis 500, in 2014. The veteran broadcaster also will branch into other sports beginning in 2015.

Bestwick, who has been part of ESPN’s NASCAR coverage since 2007, will continue as the anchor for the network’s NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series telecasts in 2014, the final year of ESPN’s contract to televise live NASCAR racing.

In 2015, in addition to IndyCar Series racing, Bestwick also will call play-by-play on college football telecasts for ESPN, a variety of collegiate sports on the upcoming SEC Network, and on ESPN interactive television productions of golf and tennis.

“Allen Bestwick has been a valuable contributor to our NASCAR coverage the past seven years and we’re delighted that he will be bringing his versatility and talents to our IndyCar telecasts as well as other sports for years to come,” said John Wildhack, ESPN executive vice president, programming and production.
Though closely associated with motorsports for most of his 27 years in broadcasting, Bestwick also has called football, track and field and hockey, among other sports, during his career. He worked a college football game for ESPN in November.

“I love sports – all sports,” Bestwick said. “This is a tremendous opportunity to call the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, a childhood dream come true, and some other sports that I enjoy as well. And we still have two NASCAR champions to crown on ESPN in 2014. I’m thrilled to be going into the future with ESPN.”
Bestwick started broadcasting in 1986 covering live NASCAR races as a turn announcer for MRN Radio. He worked for MRN for nearly 15 years, including as the play-by-play announcer from 1988-2000 and host of the network’s daily news program.

Bestwick, who also worked briefly in New York for ABC Radio, made his television debut in 1995 on the original NASCAR Today program on ESPN and joined the SPEED Channel in 1996 as the host of Inside NEXTEL Cup Racing, a post he held for 10 years. He started pit reporting for TBS and TNT in 1997. While continuing to work in radio, Bestwick joined NBC in 1999, covering NASCAR races as well as American Le Mans Series races, arena football and track and field events. He was part of NBC and TNT’s NASCAR coverage from 2001-2006, both as a pit reporter and lead announcer.

Bestwick has been the anchor for ESPN’s NASCAR coverage since July of 2011. He previously was host of the pre-race NASCAR Countdown program from mid-2007 through mid-2011 while also calling selected races from the booth, and was a pit reporter for part of the 2007 season.

ESPN’s NASCAR coverage for 2013 begins with the NASCAR Nationwide Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 22, with telecasts of the final 17 NASCAR Sprint Cup races beginning July 27 at Indianapolis.
On May 25, ABC will televise the Indianapolis 500 for the 50th consecutive year. The network also will televise four other IndyCar Series races as well as Indianapolis 500 qualifications. Coverage begins with the March 30 season opener in St. Petersburg, Fla.

NASCAR Unveils New Truck Series Models

The New 2014 Toyota Tundra

At an event today at the SPRINT Fan Zone at Daytona International Speedway, NASCAR officially unveiled newly designed bodies for NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race trucks – set to debut on Friday night in the NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona. The newly redesigned bodies will match the look of their respective showroom counterparts.

Today’s introduction of the new truck bodies follows successful launches of race vehicles in NASCAR’s other two national series – the Gen-6 car last year in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the new models in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2010.

“Each manufacturer has designed distinctly different trucks that they can use to promote their showroom models through their involvement with NASCAR racing,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition and racing development. “We have worked closely with all three manufacturers for the past several years, and we’re excited to unveil a new truck body that will make one of NASCAR’s most exciting series even better.”

Extensive research and testing went into the development of the new bodies, with the goal of continued close competition while allowing specific features from each model. The new trucks have a unique design that will make it easier for fans to recognize their favorite model.

“The truck has a new look that fans can relate to with their own truck at home,” said Chad Little, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series managing director. “The competitors have been happy with the new trucks in testing in January and we expect to continue to have some of the best racing in NASCAR for our fans at Daytona.”

Richard Petty agrees to race Danica

Quote:
Daytona Beach, Florida- It’s official! This morning just past the 7:30 East Coast time, Richard Petty has stepped up and responded to the open challenge left by Tony Stewart.

Petty called into the popular Sirius NASCAR Radio Station with excitement in his voice and confirmed that he is willing to take Danica Patrick on in equal equipment, one on one.

On FOX News, Petty was interviewed at not only again responded to the challenge, but also responded to people’s criticism, saying he’s not sexist, but he is treating her “like one of the guys”. When asked about the challenge Tony Stewart left on the table he says, ”Yeah you know, I’m 76 years old. [Okay]. It’s been 25 years since I’ve been in a racecar, but I’ll take that challenge.” Petty states this with a smile on his face and he seems pretty dang serious about it.

Later on, he even says that there’s a chance that she can win the Daytona 500, but he overshadows that comment by saying, “there’s been a bunch of people that have won one race, and that’s a restrictor plate race, Daytona or Talladega.”

The challenge is out there, and now it’s time to see if it really takes place. Patrick vs Petty!
