I think it's just the fact that most people really wanted to play NHL and can't wait for a patch and the people at gamestop are just annoyed at people trying to return it, so they'd rather stop having people complain to them over making sales.

Gamestop employees don't make money if someone buys a game, so they're just doing what's less annoying for themselves. Can't really blame them too.
