Re: ESPN Presents: Cardinals Baseball

Tensions on high!!
Second game against Cubs proves to be an entertaining one

St. Louis, MO -- It's so young in the season and tensions between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs are already on the rise. Both teams were on the verge of clearing the benches when the umpires intervened after the cubs threw, and hit, back to back Cardinals batters.

"It's completely trash, it's bush league and they try anything like that for the rest of the season they can expect some trouble," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said after the game.

"Matheny has always been a whiner, he was a whiner when he was behind the plate and he was a whiner when he was at bat. If he personally guarantees some kind of 'trouble' I'm man enough to take him out if the benches clear," responded Dale Sveum, the Cubs manager, after the game.

The game wasn't a close one as the Cardinals took the lead on back to back home runs by Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman in the first inning. Every time the Cubs would score, the Cardinals would answer back in a fashion that showed they were the dominant team, a good turn around from the home opener loss last night.

Carlos Beltran had the best game from the plate for the Cardinals going 3-5 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs after a slow start to the season so far for him. On the mound Jaime Garcia grabbed his second win of the year backed by a good offense after he gave up 3 runs and only struck out 3 Cubs batters.

In the other dugout Aflonso Soriano finally broke out of his slump, going 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI including his first home run and double for the year. Randy Wells went 4 innings for the Cubs giving up 6 runs in the loss.

The Cubs and Cardinals close out an interesting series tomorrow.
