I also think it's not just EA that wants the exclusive license. The NFL has been directing singular 'exclusive' licensing contracts with many products and vendors over the past few years, so there's no reason the NFL would want a competitor to a known, reliable marketing partner like EA Sports.

But the OP's original point is valid. If there is no continuing interest in developing improved CPU AI, then today's and tomorrow's sales will be driven by a demographic that doesn't understand, or even care, about operating an NFL franchise. In other words, a larger percentage of Madden customers lack the will or patience for CFM, and only want to 'DOMINATE THEIR MUT...blah blah blah...'!

The marketplace has spoken, and sim players will have to look elsewhere someday. At least it's still fun today.
