EA Wants To Renew NFL License When the Time Comes

This edition of stating the obvious comes from the Electronic Gaming Summit, an event EA attended and spoke at yesterday. At the event EA Sports President Peter Moore spoke about and demoed Madden 09 on the Wii and also talked about the oft controversial NFL license. According to Kotaku, Moore said that EA plans to renew the NFL license exclusivity deal when it runs out after the 2012 NFL season.

While this news is hardly surprising the timing is a bit odd considering 2012 is so far off (and a new labor agreement away) at this point. It will also make EA PR earn their money once again since surely this is not going to be the most popular thing to ever leave Peter Moore's mouth. With that in mind, I have to assume that Moore was asked about the NFL license at the event, otherwise I'm not sure why he'd be discussing a new license agreement already.

Is this news shocking? No. Disappointing...?

I would love for the NFL to deny this renewal. Just to get some variety. I was never a big fan of fever or gameday on PS2 and Xbox, but it was nice having the alternatives.

they said it was to reel in quality and make for stable products, but it was all about cash. Doubtful that the NFL cares enough to change that stance. They also rather take money from reebok than allow coaches to look better than high school coaches on the sidelines.

The only possible reason the deal could ever hit a snag is if EA tries to lowball the NFL on a renewal, since they're the only company able to put out a relevant NFL licensed game at this point if it opens back up. EA has the cash, so they'll pay for the license agan.

Some of you still don't get it. The NFL was tire of mandating different game developers. They offered the exclusive license for a price and everyone even Disney was in the bidding to get it. As a matter of fact Disney almost won but EA out did them in the last minute. So imagine if Disnet had the license? What? Would you all be playing Disney's backyard football? Be thankful that a credible developer got possession of the license. And yes I do think competition makes everything better but if your going to be upset be mad at the NFL. They are those ones who put everyone on the spot and forced this situation!

Re: EA Wants To Renew NFL License When the Time Comes

Everyone has seen the writing on the wall.

The sooner everyone can accept that football gaming will never be the same, the better off we are.

NFL football , as we know it as a video game, had died. Madden will continue to release broken games over the decades that do nothing more than dumb it down to the lowest common denominator and add stupid gimmiks for the foreseeable future.

Only hope we have now is that someone releases a kick azz football title that offers users full customization so they can turn that game into their NFL fix. Problem with this is that no matter how good the game is, its sales probably could not justify the effort put forth to make it.
