EA Laying Off Up To 10% of Employees Today

There is big news floating around the gaming industry that EA could be laying off as much as 10% of it's employees today. There is no indication which teams or studios are being affected, but there is no doubt some key personnel could be receiving tough news today.

EA posted an official statement:

Quote:
"In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations. We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of our employees – those that are leaving EA will be missed by their colleagues and friends.

These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us."

From the statement and earlier actions by the company, including seemingly laying off the entire EA Montreal Studio, it seems EA is trying to reshape their organizational structure around delivering more big box and mobile titles and less of anything else. Likely this means that a lot of the workforce that was dedicated to projects like a Madden on the Wii-U might be on the way out, especially given EA's silence on other platforms outside of the Microsoft and Sony platforms at the EA Sports preview event last week.

We'll update on this when we hear anything new.

No matter how much I dislike EA sometimes, it always sucks hearing about people losing their jobs.

Need to pay for John ******ello's severance package somehow right. Real shame: the workers lose their jobs for all the poor decision making by upper management.

Dow's down, S&P's down, but EA's up....still early in the day, but you can thank Wall Street for this. Today is actually the highest the stock has been since March 18th.

Always sad when people lose their job. Hopefully they can find a new job quickly.

Hate seeing folks losing their jobs, even at the Worst Company in America. It's what most big companies do though. They layoff 5 to 10 percent each year and then begin hiring again the following year. Idea is to trim the fat (folks that aren't performing) with the hopes of hiring new/better talent.
