OUYA console now in stores for $99.99 Stuck
Posted on June 25, 2013 at 01:48 PM.
Kickstarter's first game console, the OUYA, officially went on sale today for $99.99 at Best Buy, GameStop, Target, GAME and Amazon.com.

As of this writing, Amazon's entire inventory of systems and controllers has already sold out, meaning potential buyers of the Android-based console will need to visit a local game shop to pick up an OUYA today.

For $99.99, the OUYA's retail package includes:
  • OUYA game console
  • OUYA wireless controller with removable faceplates
  • HDMI cable
  • Two AA batteries
  • Power adapter
Additional OUYA controllers are retailing for $49.99, though the system also recognizes many existing USB and Bluetooth controllers, including Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 pads.

The OUYA runs on an Android operating system, utilizing technology equivalent to a mid-tier smartphone:
  • CPU: nVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-Core
  • Memory: 1 GB RAM
  • Storage: 8 GB Internal Flash Storage (expandable via USB Port)
  • USB: One USB 2.0 port, One Micro USB port
  • Connectivity: WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), Ethernet port, and Bluetooth
  • Output: HDMI (up to 1080p HD)
The OUYA does not use physical media, as its games are downloadable only. Every title on the OUYA features some way to play for free, be it through a traditional demo or by offering the entire game for free then encouraging donations or micropayments.

A library of 177 games is available at launch, in addition to multimedia apps like Twitch.tv. Support for streaming movie and music services like Flixster and iHeartRadio is also in the works, though not present on launch day.

I may pick one up later this week if I can find one just to check out the sports lineup. I don't own a smartphone, so all these Android games are new to me.

I heard it has emulators, so that would be worth the 99 bucks right there. Relive some childhood memories with an actual controller!

Yes, I was disappointed to see only three sports games in the initial launch lineup. And of those three, I don't think I'd want to buy any of them. I'm hoping the open nature of the platform encourages more sports titles to show up in the future.

Looking at the OUYA's game list, there are currently emulators for NEO GEO, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color, NES, SNES, Genesis and N64.
