"Legendary hitter Ted Williams used to practice his craft in many different ways, including writing numbers on baseballs and trying to recognize them as they were pitched to him. In time, Williams learned to recognize pitches instantly, using the rapidly spinning seams of the ball as a reference. While few players have ever possessed the "Splendid Splinter's" uncanny abilities, reading pitches as quickly as possible is still integral to a Major League hitter's success. There are multiple ways to accomplish this. Some players, like Williams, watch for the seams on the ball."
