Madden 2010 News Post

The new Madden NFL 10 blog is online, taking a deeper look into pass blocking.

Quote:
"Hello Madden faithful - it's Monday, and it’s time for another blog! This week we'll be following up a little bit on the last PRO-TAK blog [link]. We covered gang tackling in detail last time, so for this blog we thought we’d dig a little deeper on our pass blocking, and also mention how PRO-TAK’s dynamic steering technology will help take our blocking a little bit farther into that next level that we know we need to hit of realism. At the top of nearly every community wish list for the past 3+ years has been OL/DL interaction…so this year we’re proud to say we’ve spent a really good amount of time improving this area, and we’ve also built a strong foundation that we can continue to add on to in the future."

i dont know how to make the link a click-able link, but just put this in the search bar and take a look

APF 2k8 got the size of ball spot on

there was something said at the very beginning of the time when blogs first started coming out that the ball size couldnt be shrunken this year because they would have to rewrite their whole formula or whatever... but im pretty sure they are supposed to get it switched for the next iteration of madden...

So how exactly does Haloti Ngata a 3-4 DE just easily blow by either Flozell Adams or Marc Colombo with no help at all? I can understand Julius Peppers or Jared Allen doing this, but how does a 3-4 run stopping DE/DT just easily blow past one of the top pass blocking O-Lines OT's. Andre Gurode seems to be doing nothing on the play, and from the video it seems like there is no LB's blitzing, and its not like Trevor Pryce is going to command a double team?

Imo. Ngata is close to the level of Peppers. Its just that there are so many other superstars on the ravens D you don't notice him.

And they are tackling the QB that has left the pocket. Showing branching animations during pass blocking....

Ngata is a really good player, but hes not a pass rushing specialist.

And I hope that was just a demostration, because I sure don't wanna see Ngata kill 80-85+ rated pass blocking lineman like they are nothing 1 on 1.

Game looks good. The movement looks a lot better than previous years.

It's off topic, but I wish the last steps of the QB dropbacks were more fluid. You only see glimpses in the M10 vid that Ian posted, but I can see the awkwardness in it . I just wish they were more fluid like those in this youtube clip (included the link in case the vid doesn't show up; my embedding skills could use work):
Upon further review, looks as if the QB dropback was possibly interrupted by the user. That could've contributed to it looking so jerky. It didn't look as 'jerked' in the first gameplay trailer or the other vids . Could probably still use some smoothing out in the future, but not as bad as previously thought.

offensive linemen are supposed to look straight at the beginning of the kick slide because his first assignment is to make sure there is no inside pressure. If there is no pressure from the inside when he is done with his initial steps then he turns out and faces the d-end.

I loved this blog. But Ian needs to state whether this stuff is in NCAA or not. It's killing me every time I read these blogs and wonder this stuff.

Do you mean 12 times? (sorry, I just couldn't resist.)

hahaha.. got me again..
but listen that was against a backup LT with no playing experience, and for some ridiculous reason Andy Reid kept leaving him on an island against whoever was lined up over there. that shouldn't happen against most LT's.. not sayin, just sayin..

as it is, I get sacked waaaay too much in madden. I always try to play from within the pocket and I'm always giving up cheap sacks that others don't because they just drop back 10 yards. I'm hoping those days are over.

Basically what I am concerned about or looking to see if you can address is how will the other defenders react to the play. I have been very impressed by the way 2K8 handled this problem - specifically the way other defenders would combine with the QB's own momentum to make you essentially choose to run or pass but not retain the option to do either - at least not as long as you can have both options in Madden. I think previous Madden releases have used a speed cheat to control this - making almost any QB lame and slow out of the pocket, instead of having different defensive logic. Is that still how this is controlled?

In Madden games, once the QB gets to the outside, a skilled player can buy an inordinate amount of time to throw and can hold the ball waaaaaaay longer than a similar situation in 2K8 (or 2K5). This also leads to unrealistic rushing gains when the Madden defenders in zone defense fail to react to a running QB until he has past the LOS....

Other things that looked good:

I will see if I can answer some of your concerns, well one at least. I purposely waited until the T and DE engaged and ran outside in the CD build. From the shotgun I got outside a lot more than I liked. That's why I asked for it to set up faster. Ideally I'd like the DE/OLB's to be 1 step away from the QB as he bounces off his heels in his drop. They have to get up the field. I don't mind the QB stepping under and in that lane. The Ends did get off their blocks pretty quick once they saw me going outside so I did not have too much time. Most of the plays I had to throw on the run and they were all overthrown passes.

As far as Troy Smith I wouldn't worry about him at all, especially on deep passes Arm was pretty damn weak in the CD build.

But I see what you are getting at. However earlier in the 2nd play the ball carrier runs right next to the engaged player and could have easily been tackled (or atleast slowed down a little) had the defender stuck his arm out to grab him. Like Valdarez asked will we be able to do something like this or will we have to completely break away from the block, turn up field, and try to make the tackle?
IMO, if the defender would have tackled the ball carrier it would have been highly unrealistic. It's very hard to take down a ball carrier from the side while you're engaged, add on top of that the fact you're running. I agree, sticking on arm out there would be a nice animation in that instant even if he is just "grasping" at air.

BTW, apex, the monotone-ness is killing me.

Grabbing a hold, if only to slow down the ball carrier for a bit, or alter their running path though would be a very nice addition. I bet the ProTak can provide it since it's procedural. They'll just have to code for it.

i think the video should have showed the whole team blocking not just one player. The reason i say that is because the person who was doing the video could have went to replay and choose the best person blocking on that play. What about the rest of the team.

What about the pocket i would like to see that develop and everything.

Much appreciated LB...
same from me LB..."Roll and Chuck" must Die

Hopefully Now when someone escapes/extends the pocket it will be looked at as true skill rather than cheese
