Madden 2010 News Post

IGN has posted their hands-on preview of Madden NFL 10.

Quote:
"Presentation, something that was seriously lacking in the first Madden iterations on current-gen systems, has seen a nice overhaul. Pre-game you'll notice camera angles that show concession stands handing hot dogs to fans and people making their way to their seats. During the action there will be detailed cutscenes (not the low-resolution models like in last year's game) showing players warming up on the sideline. If your quarterback is taking a licking on the field you'll see him trot over to the sideline and pick up a phone to talk to the coach's box. The chain gang is also present, as are all of the refs that should be on the field. And yes, you can truck into them.

Just don't run into them too hard or you might injure one of your star players. Do that, and you'll be greeted with a new injury mechanic. It won't happen immediately – depending on the severity of the injury your man might need to be helped off the field by other players – but once the problem is diagnosed you'll be shown a screen that tells you what's injured, how severe it is and then you'll be given the option to put him back in the game. You'll be given a rating that tells you how good he'll be once he's back on the field and you'll see the likelihood of him re-injuring himself. It's sort of like Blitz The League, but without the steroid use."

I actually didn't expect an ign article on a sports game to be this good

Im not fretting yet about the Broken Pocket issues.....Ian knows it must be fixed...hopefully with appropriate accelerate/decelerate animations that make you set your feet before you throw
As evidenced by this weeks blog...I think they're hitting it hard

Presentation sounds great

Well with the new passer ratings, if a qb chucks the ball that cant chuck the ball the ball will sail and thus be picked off. I dont think we have to be too worried about that.

Ok gents lets all take a deep breath and exhale, its all over! We all have to understand this is a process and like all things it will take time and patience, we are in a very unique situation being in the information age.

Like I have said many times before we have an opportunity to see a game developed from beginning to end, gentlemen I promise the information we are receiving is real time just like if you were assisting with development.

What this means for us is, we can't ride the emotional roller coaster HI, LOW, HI, LOW. When we all create rosters or sliders we begin with a foundation, then you create a formula, next you test it, if its not quite rite you tweak it. We have come to far with to much optimism to crash and burn at the tweak stage. Now is time to take constructive criticism and turn it into action, give some supportive direction of hope.

What the team is building is a game for us, not a game for COLUMNIST; he played it on pro that alone tells me he is not a true fan of competition. We play football games to compete, my little nephew plays & just wants to have fun; Ian and the boys have a very difficult job.
Take the most popular football game in the world & please every person who plays it? Good luck, we are the informed minority; gamers who understand the process to achieve greatness. We have been there before we will be there again!

Playing Madden since 1990, I'm in to deep to turn back now!

People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.

Thanks EA crew for all your hard work, KUDOS!

In addition to the pocket being fixed they really need to do something about running back with the QB and chucking it 40 yds down the field... let's hope this gets tuned down before the game ships

holy batman - that clip with the run back and chuck !

# 67 NYyankz225 @ 05/15/09 03:07 PM
That clip is clearly using some edited rosters or on Rookie mode. I know that's impossible to do on All Pro/All Madden. Not saying the run-and-chuck isn't still there but there's absolutely no way you can run back and get it that far on All Madden.

wasn't there a preview article from ign just a few days ago? this is totally different.

Its small things like that, that made NFL 2K5 so immersive. Believe it folks, i think im excited for Madden! Cant believe im saying that but its the truth.
They even added hot dog dudes for the pre game. There is obviously a lot being added that we are completely unaware of .

These are the same guys giving games like Madden 06 on the 360 an 8.0.
Why should their previews have any credibility?
Just like the EA devs can be improved/change, so can IGN reviewers . Nate has some semblance of football knowledge.

I'm glad people are starting to see and read about the improvements we saw first hand. Too early to say what the reaction will be in August, but at least you know we weren't blowing smoke up your arses for the past month .

I'm just glad you mentioned that Rodgers had his throwing animation . Glad to finally hear some news about something Pack related...

I don't know if anyone saw this and I really don't feel like reading through 9 pages but here is a little bit about presentation.

Presentation, something that was seriously lacking in the first Madden iterations on current-gen systems, has seen a nice overhaul. Pre-game you'll notice camera angles that show concession stands handing hot dogs to fans and people making their way to their seats. During the action there will be detailed cutscenes (not the low-resolution models like in last year's game) showing players warming up on the sideline. The chain gang is also present, as are all of the refs that should be on the field. And yes, you can truck into them. It sounds like the presentation has been greatly upgraded.

Loving that the Presentation stuff was brought up! Really not loving the run back forever and throw the perfect strike. This is where I am wondering if the commitment to a total makeover is there. We all know that is a sacred cow with Madden, and totally reeks of "arcade." It's cool they took away the throwing icons, but it just needs to go, forever... If this game wants to be totally serious as being what you see on Sunday you see in Madden, then they need to kill all of what made it semi-arcady. Either with killer pursuit or devastating losses of accuracy. I'm loving almost all of what I hear, but this issue is huge. That's why I hate online sooo much, it's all about using cheese to win and being good at Madden-style football. If we're gonna go sim, then let's do it all the way. To twist
Ian's quote: "Great presentation will make them want to stay, but cheesy/unrealstic gameplay will kill the illusion created eventually...."

# 76 lolfalconsbeatu @ 05/15/09 03:27 PM
I hope they fix that pocket!

I dont want to see ppl dropping back 30 yards to make a thirty yard pass down field anymore...

# 77 CreatineKasey @ 05/15/09 03:34 PM
I thought it was cool to read you can quick switch to a nearby offensive player and help push the pile! I can imagine having a fight for a first down or TD and trying to get the FB or another lagging OL behind the pile to help grind out the last couple of inches.

It's kind of hard to take these kind of game reviewers seriously because like someone mentioned a few posts ago, their ratings don't really correllate with what we see in a game anyway. We are in the minority, though. What we care about isn't always what the standard gamer cares about.

Like Ian said, the guy was junking around in pro mode. I bet most of us will never even play once in pro mode. We look at this in a different light, a different detail than the average kid just wanting to sling the ball around.

Because of that I take the comments from the developers and group of OSers that played the game seriously, but other comments with a 2 pound *grain* of salt

# 78 RogueHominid @ 05/15/09 03:36 PM
I like some of the visuals, especially the ones that showcase signature styles. That little stuff goes a long way toward making each opponent feel different and authentic.

The pocket looks okay. In lots of the screens, you can only see 4 OL, and I don't think there's a double on the DT in any of them. It also looks rather massive from a scaling perspective (LOTS of empty space and a large perimeter), but all in all any pocket is better than no pocket.

The run and chuck is a big wait and see. So long as the CPU doesn't do it, it's fine. I'll never, ever play Madden online, so I won't have to worry about the Madden Nation crowd doing that ish to me. But it would be good if they made it significantly harder to do that and succeed. That's a big index, imo, of the game's commitment to sim or arcade style play.

why can't we buy this game now. How the hell am i supposed to wait 3 months?

Can we start a petition to have madden released at the beginning of summer haha

Overall liked the article. Loved the presentation.
