MLB 10 News Post

Gamespot continues its week of MLB '10: The Show in this online play article.

"Despite the sport's relatively sluggish pace, timing is more important in baseball than arguably any other sport. That goes double for video game baseball, where network lag or frame rate issues can severely spoil the pitcher/batter duel that is so integral to the sport. The team is looking to address these lag issues with tech that would better respond to bad network connections and a variable frame rate system that would keep the speed of the game consistent where lag would normally rear its ugly head. I didn't get to play the game online and can't comment on how successful those solutions will be at improving the online performance. One goal that the team has clearly met, however, is in improving the presentation of MLB 10's online suite of features."

I'm gonna kind of miss the rating system that was in place. I know its flawed but I used that to determine who I would play. Thats how I kept a 5 star rating cuz I would only play people that had great reputation from comments left.

Now with the new sportsmanship rating the people with multiple accounts will just get their rating up easily and you'll have no idea that he is a respectable player.

Please tell me there is more to the new sportsmanship rating other than just not trying to head hunt or not finishing the game because to me that would seem even more flawed. Hope I'm missing something here.

There are other parameters as well but I do not remember them at the moment.

Thanks for your online write-up. Basically confirming that there is indeed an icon for the mic and that they were working on re-mapping the button.

I hope we can get confirmation on the resetting of a game. Crossing fingers here.

Also intrigued by possible other paramaters for sportsmanship. Trying to think what else the game could decide on a person's behavior other than pulling the plug perhaps...?

From what I understand after reading the article, the rating will be based on how the game is played, they will somehow monitor the actions taken during the game. The mentioned if you go headhunting or quitting games early. Not sure what other criteria they will look at.

No problem my pleasure! As far as resetting the game, I got confirmation that it did not make it in this year. we just have to put it on the list for the next cycle.

We are basically keep track of everything you do in a game. How many times you quit, how many times you bean a batter, how many leagues you quit how many leagues you finished etc........

The whole point was to give users more tools in deciding on who they play and what leagues they should join if they don't have a bunch of friends to play in one with.

Great news Russell, especially for a guy like me who lacks friends!!!

The problem is multiple accounts. I wish they didn't allow this.

Great news - there is alot of hope and hype at my site about this years online features, we are already working behind the scenes to get our European League up and running successfully. Luckily we have a couple of guys with solid league management experience to add to the solid features offered by the game.

Cannot wait

Question. With the online leagues can you fantasy draft teams or do you have to use the real teams?

Bingo..

PLus they should temporary ban the MAC address (24, 48 hrs) of people that is constantly pulling - this will increase the percentage of completed games IMO

You can turn it off in last years game online. So why would it be any different this year?

I know there are more game options you can choose from this year but I do not know if that is one of them.

They said this was addressed since the ball collision detection that exists now.

Yeah, Knight has touched on this numreous times (they're just lost in the mix) a search would probably help you finding it. But it sounds as if this year is gonna be much better.

Um... no? I think you mean "IP address banning" since I doubt PSN has the ability to do MAC address scraping from my router. If PSN does keep some sort of link table internally that corresponds with MAC addresses while shipped this is also easily evadable since... the PSN comes stock with 2 network adapters, which means 2 separate MAC addresses...

...and even IP address banning is not the answer here. Let me explain why in an anecdotal manner - okay I have a 13 year old and a 7 year old. Now lets say we have two ps3s in the house - one for each of them! Pretty sweet, huh? Well, they're all home one afternoon and all playing The Show online against different people (I have a nice internet connection, but this is a hypothetical anyway...) My 7 year old rage quits for some silly reason. Suddenly, my 13 year old is banned and cannot complete his game. Why? Because the two PS3's have the same IP address as far as PSN is concerned.

Okay, so let's take it a step further and say they develop some sort of "token" system that allows them to temporarily revoke the login status and "lock out" my 7 year old's PS3 from PSN but not my 13 year old's. What about if I wanted to play a game / buy some stuff on the 7 year old's PS3 online -- under my (different) user ID? Talk about angry customers...

So we're back to username-level bans which are easily evaded since PSN IDs are so easy to create. The answer is to play responsibly. Don't be a jerk about it. Count quits when the user leaves a game prematurely as losses and leave it at that. I'm willing to give the new sportsmanship rating a try if it allows for negatively rating users who drop off early when they're losing.
