NBA 2K12 News Post

2K Sports has just posted their first NBA 2K12 Developer Insight of the year, as they go over the marketing and community efforts they have planned. New screenshots have been included!

It’s my favorite time of year, as we’re now just 53 days away from launch and, like many of you, this time of year feels like the holidays. We’re going to be BIG this year with constant NBA 2K12 news from here until launch so be sure to stay up-to-date on all the hot new stuff we’re bringing to you this year.

I remember that, over the course of the spring, I would get the two questions time and time again: 1) how does NBA 2K12 outdo Michael Jordan as cover athlete and 2) how does it follow-up on it’s critical acclaim in terms of gameplay? Both questions have been on everyone’s mind since the success of last year’s game, which saw us sell more than 5 million copies and win 20 “Sports Game of the Year” awards from various publications. And they’re fair, because 2K11 was undoubtedly the best basketball game ever released in the eyes of this (maybe somewhat biased) observer.

Firstly, let me address the cover. We could only follow up “His Airness” one way -by doing it even bigger and better than anything before. So we’ve not only brought back MJ for NBA 2K12, but we’re also inviting a couple of his friends: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, who will appear on their own covers at launch. What better way to ring in the all-new “NBA’s Greatest Mode” than with three of the best players to ever lace them up?

Jordan, Magic and Bird (along with Julius “Dr. J” Erving and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) are just five of the 15 NBA legends we’re bringing into the mix for the all-new “NBA’s Greatest Mode.” Who will be the other 10? We’re letting you sounds guys sound off and as usual, the feedback from our community has been amazing. More than 200,000 votes have been cast on Facebook, resulting in the current top 15 (Bryant, James and Wade excluded):

1. Shaquille O’Neal – 12.1%
2. Allen Iverson – 9.4%
3. Wilt Chamberlain – 8.4%
4. Reggie Miller – 7%
5. Hakeem Olajuwon – 6.2%
6. Charles Barkley – 6%
7. Bill Russell – 5.1%
8. Dominique Wilkins – 4%
9. Oscar Robertson – 3.5%
10. Karl Malone – 2.5%
11. John Stockton – 2%
12. Jerry West – 1.6%
13. Scottie Pippen – 1.6%
14. Patrick Ewing – 1.4%
15. Isiah Thomas – 1.2%

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of community involvement over the next two months. We’ve created a skeleton list of the 15 players and rivalries to be featured in NBA’s Greatest. But we’ve been interested in your feedback. Is there a particular game or player you want to relive in NBA 2K12? You’ll finally get the chance to do so come Oct 4.

The next question is how we improve on our unprecedented gameplay. Our momentum from NBA 2K11 has definitely carried over into this year’s launch cycle, and that was very apparent when we showed up to E3. We were a focal point at Sony’s show and with a little help from five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant, our brand was able to gain some huge attention. When the dust had settled at E3, we had picked up eight “Sports Game of the Year” nominations. As you remember, I was at E3 and it became apparent that we’re bigger than ever when we coaxed those awards despite only showing a five minute demo behind closed doors.

So far, the news of our cover and the “NBA’s Greatest” Mode has set off waves in the industry. But OBVIOSULY, the largest part of the game is the 2011-2012 NBA season and players and all the gameplay features that you have come to expect of us. But if last year proved anything, NBA fans care very much about the history of the game, and how it’s influenced the present-day game. We want to pay attention to that and we want people to compare the generations, players and teams and decide once and for all who’s better. I thank Scottie Pippen for that when he debated whether LeBron was better than Michael around the NBA Finals. I saw that blow up Twitter that week. Why not let that debate live on? Having said all that, I felt like it was a good idea to leak a couple screenshots of current players to the loyal readers of our Developer Insights…

And just to give you guys an exclusive heads up: The complete roster for NBA’s Greatest and a greater breakdown on the mode will be revealed next Friday, August 19th. My main man Erick Boenisch, or as you know him SimBaller, will be dropping a Developer Insight on the subject. But the news won’t stop there, as we’ll be releasing new Developer Insights at least once a week (Monday, Wednesday, and/or Friday… at least a dozen total) and news constantly over the next eight weeks leading up to launch. As always, you can expect Insights about Gameplay, My Player, and Online along with other unannounced features. I hope you’re as excited for October 4 as I am. As I said, it’s my favorite time of year.

I think it would be a lot of fun making behind the back passes, elbow passes, insane dribble moves, half court alley oops, half court bounce passes. You get the idea. It's gonna be a tough year unless you can wow gamers with nba 2k12.
Just buy NBA jam then..

I would love if they added all-star games into the greatest (as extras, of course)
1998 ASG, 97 (get a trip doub with MJ), 92 (play as magic), 88 (score 40 with MJ), etc.....
BUT 98/97 is a must (because that way we get guys like Reggie, Penny, Younger Shaq, a rookie Timmy D, second year Kobe, Malone, Ewing, Kemp, etc.)
That would only be topped by redo the 96-97 72 win season (play a season)....

Are you suggesting that if 2K insisted on relying on gimmicks this year, it'd be the inclusion of Jason Williams that'd save the game from losing sales and not the inclusion of some of the NBA's all-time greatest players and teams? If so, my opinion varies.

Also, your post vaguely sounded like a ransom note.

95-96=72 wins
96-97=69 wins
Like the ASG idea though

They changed parts of the game to make MJ's seem more authentic (Tongue animations, ball fake)...so this inclusion of other legends hopefully means overhauled mechanics on the things they excelled at (Rebounding, transition game, passing).

I want a working Fastbreak on higher levels where the AI doesn't cheat you out of a fast break.

I can't wait til Oct. 4th.....the Dev. Insights are just gonna make me want the game even more.....I'm not even as interested in the list of legends as i am in finding out what they are gonna add to my player mode this year.....or if we're getting online association or not.....I feel that 2k will blow our minds with 2k12.....cuz 2k11 despite the lil bugs is/was a great game.....this is the longest i've played 2k....i usually stop after the finals.....or when football season starts....BUT not this year....2k11 held it's own all year long....I'm still playing......waitin' on 12.....I can't wait, so.....come on October....

They already claimed that shoe heads will be happy this year, so we have to wait and see, sure they will be a insight about it.

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't give a damn about this. Well, I care a bit. Its nice and all but I worry about the rest of the game if all there focus went into this new mode. Their are so many things they could have perfected instead of adding this mode. I was excited about the Jordan mode at first, but after a few challenges never played it again, but I do always want him in the game. what about my player? online franchises finally? the servers are still a problem. Online crew's can be sooo much better. these are the things that matter to me actually. I see this mode really as just a cosmetic surgery or putting make up on a flawed game. Putting a band aid on a gun shot wound

I guess we're all in wait-and-see mode. But I mean, the "Greatest" thing is only 1 of 12 insights. So at least there seems to be 11 other opportunities to see what they've improved in those other areas you mentioned. Different folks are looking for different points of emphasis. Adding more classics just happens to be one of my biggest wishes, so I can't wait to hear more information in this regard. However, I understand there's others who are interested in modes I don't even touch (the idea of an online franchise). I think there's going to be a lot covered before 2K's release.

Also, 2K11 was a huge leap over 2K10 on all fronts. I think most can agree it was not just 2K10 with the Jordan Challenge. So I find it quite doubtful that the rest of the development team would sit on their hands while a specific portion of 2K's crew created this "Greatest" challenge mode. I think their development team is a lot more diversified than people think. The My Player and Online updates are there, and I'm betting they're each going to have their own insights, so I guess patience is a virtue at this point (easier said than done, I know).

Let's ignore everything they fixed last year... and ignore everything they're obviously fixing this year... and keep making funny comments when you're wrong again!

Let's see - what else can people complain about this year....?

LOL

I agree that they have made strides improving the graphics and did make positive changes last year - seem to be doing even more this year - and I like to think the "graphics & authenticity" thread helped.

Agreed. I'm one of those people who only has a bit of an interest in this legends stuff.

The E3 demo, and some stuff in that reveal trailer makes me worried about the state of the gameplay.

love the sleeve Rondo has on. looks like it's shorter and leaves room for accessory layering.

I would love to see "Legend" specific animations like we got with Jordan last year. I remember a couple of old games years ago had a specific dribbling style for Magic Johnson as a legend (can't remember if it was an old NBA Live game or one of the early NBA 2K games on PS2)..
