MLB 14 The Show News Post

MLB 15 The Show is surely well on its way to being delivered to gamers next Spring, but that doesn’t mean we can’t add our own input on what we’d like to see in next year’s game.

In many cases, MLB 14 The Show was a pretty well executed game with a few notable flaws that held it back from true greatness. The shortlist of fixes for next year seem obvious, but there are also several gameplay issues we would love to see tidied up before next spring.

Here’s what we’d like to see fixed heading into next year:
  1. Online Play - Because this just has to work next year doesn’t it? This year was closer than ever, but it still wasn’t a great experience by any means.
  2. Commentary - The current commentary team isn’t bad, just stale — and their lines are repeating a bit too often for our tastes. Replacing the current guys is one option, having them add a lot more lines is another one.
  3. Better Management In Franchise Mode - The franchise mode is great, but there are a few items missing I really wish were there. Depth charts is one, but also better feedback on what you are doing as you do it. The experience is fine if you are a baseball savvy guy, but if you don’t know much about how the roster rules work in baseball you will almost certainly be lost guaranteed.
  4. More accuracy in stadiums, jerseys, etc. - The Show on PS3 was always above and beyond on the little things. Nowadays, it seems to be right with the rest of the pack on many of those little things, so another leap in attention to detail would be amazing.
  5. All of those gameplay enhancements - You can list what you’d love to see in the comments. Things like even more fielding animations, more hit variety, etc. These are all no brainers and should be in each new game, but it doesn’t hurt to demand it.
  6. Bonus: Create-A-Stadium. Seriously, I’m a ballpark junkie and I know I’m not the only one. Giving users the ability to create custom stadiums, especially with enough options to recreate many past great ballparks (or build a new ballpark for your franchise) would be an amazing addition we’ve not really ever seen in a baseball game.
What do you want to see in MLB 15 The Show?

This is a cut and paste of a post I made in another thread a month or so ago, with minor edits.

MLB The Show is the only sports title I play so I spend a lot of time with it.

Though this year I am playing significantly less then previous years. Part of this is because the game is becoming quite stale, another reason is the stripping of certain features and options I've noticed over the last couple years.

Features like the Signs from the 3rd Base Coach from 12 were totally stripped from the game. This gave a lot of life to the baserunning game, and being asked to drop a bunt down in certain situations is certainly more immersive.

The Green Light for Baserunning was also great. It made you be extra careful as getting caught to many times would have the manager keep you from stealing, and if you stole anyway you were benched. Another realistic immersive feature.

Also I really miss the Newspaper that had a brief recap of the previous game played. I know it wasn't the greatest thing, but if they weren't going to improve on it, they didn't have to remove it. It almost added a kind of RPG type feel to the game.

Another thing I miss this year is the classic bunting option. Again not sure why this was removed.

One thing I really hope they do going forward is to focus on improving what is in the game already, and not cramming in a bunch of new modes and systems. They really need to focus on the Core modes. Franchise, RTTS, Online. Thinking of all the improvements to these core modes we could have gotten, instead we get Show Live, Community Challenges, etc. Maybe I am the only one, but I only ever touch those other modes, if there is a trophy associated with it. Then once I am done, It's back to RTTS and Franchise until the next year.

Hell, I'd happily give up all those new modes for working stable online. Would have been great to see all those extra resources go into improving that instead of the community challenge feature. I have only played one online game ever and that was back in The Show 12. I don't even bother trying because I know how bad it is.

RTTS needs major attention in 15.

It's all a little lifeless imo, there is zero interaction between your player and your teammates beyond the "ask manager for promotion/trade" button. Giving us the option to say spend extra time working on certain fielding drills with fellow players. For example maybe if you are a 2B and practice turning a double play with your SS you could get a kind of "familiarity bonus" to fielding interactions between the two of you. Even though its a small thing, it's realistic and makes sense, it makes you feel more part of a team, then just tossing a ball to a scripted lifeless bot.

Some VO from teammates on the field wouldn't hurt either. Or have the 1st and 3rd base coaches talk to you after you reach base.

I'd really like to see you RTTS player have some sort of manager/representation when negotiating contracts too, instead of calculating my stats through a war calculator and asking for a deal they won't agree to.

A couple little things I would like to see is more customization while creating battings stances, actually have the ability to customize how you stand, arm placement, if you tap your foot or not. Much better than the locked stances that are currently in the game. Batting stances really need an overhaul, with all the glitchy sliding of feet after you step in the batters box, and certain stances where the bat will actually be clipping through your head. (Forsythe). I'd like to see the teleporting back to the box set after you foul a ball fixed as well. Keep that for quick play exclusive. I hate fouling a ball, and then instantly have to be ready to for the next pitch, let me wander outta the box for a sec.

Like most people I'd like to see some real brands in the game for all equipment, even fake brands would be better than the generic looking equipment we have now.

Each year there seems to be a certain bug that absolutely kills the game, and is never fixed. In 12 it was the drop strike by the catcher that would freeze all play in RTTS and you would have to quit out. This year its the not being able to move into double play depth randomly. Fix that.

Though gameplay is far and away more important than graphics, the game is starting to look dated, especially with the ps4 game being little more than a touched up ps3 version. 60 fps locked would be great. And the player models need a massive makeover. Hopefully we can see them made over in tandem with new animations and batting stances.

And for the love of god include a calibration system in 15. Timing is too important in baseball to not have one. Ever since 12 the game has felt terribly floaty because of the extended timing window. Hitting in 12 felt perfect, extremely responsive, difficult but rewarding. Since I have moved to a fast gaming monitor I have been pulling everything into the seats. I have to purposefully be late on everything, it isn't fun.

I know the post is long, but I'm passionate.

I would love to see the draft in franchise get a rework. I hate scouting players who don't end up in the draft. Having all players draft-able and having pools for money (like in real life) with slots. Then if a player isn't happy with his bonus he can chose to go to school and try again later. Also please remove the caps so if a free agent is signed to a team they don't have some ugly computer generated player or the wrong cap.

Along with my create a team wish (desperately want the Rays in Orlando). I'd love to be able to create a veteran player and input career stats. I know that's being super picky. But it would be awesome!!! Also.... Let us link together last names. I have such an uncommon last name, I'll never hear it in game unless I could combine two different names =(

Individual tendencies
- pitchers that start slow/fast
- pitchers that embrace or get nervous facing a big bat
- pitchers reacting to a ball they thought were a strike
- batters/pitchers who perform better with behind or in front of the count
- pinch hitter specialist
- curveball/fastball/etc. specialist
- batter that welcome or fold in pressure situations
- dynamic strike zones (tie-in with tendencies)

Presentation
- more start overlays
- more stadium specific branding
- cameramen in the media wells next to dugouts
- TV cameramen throughout the stadium
- dynamic stadium crowd (booing home team during blowouts, sarcastic cheering, celebrating/jeering former players)
- more stadium, dugout, player, bullpen camera cuts
- stadium specific infield grass and batters box chalk lines
- dynamic weather/lighting, transmissions of weather and time

Editing
- put players in team uniform in edit screen, tired of guessing what team color 1-3 is
- neckwear
- home/road and even cold/warm accessories editing option
- real glove models
- real cleat models
- more elbow/shin guards
- ability to wear more fitting or loose uniform
- more swing follow thrus

How about some sort of co-op with OOTP or Strat-O-matic, past season replays, league creator, custom schedules, "sandbox mode" etc.

I would love to see this. There are so many awesome concepts on display at sportslogos.net (awesome site if you've never visited it), and I have a few of my own as well. I'd like to have this to recreate throwback jerseys with matching batting helmets for throwback jerseys that were worn before they had batting helmets, and maybe add names to the backs.

I'd love to be able to create the old Montreal Expos uniforms and logo and move a team there in Dynasty Mode. I've wanted to be able to do that so bad since they moved to D.C.

Have different trajectory on homerun balls. I want to see a Matt Holliday line drive homerun at times.

Some type of connected careers mode where you can do co-op RTTS or even use them online vs others. I feel like every sports title has this except MLB The Show.

The ability to relocate or create a new stadium...maybe add in a owner mode?

The ability to slide step whenever you want and not just on pitch outs. Stolen bases were abused online because if anyone saw you slide step they'd just hit R1. At the very least, allow these players to be picked off when they constantly try to steal and go back. Also bring back manual early steal.....It took much more skill to do that than to just have the CPU randomly do it for you.

More fielding animations that we have control of. If you hold the meter down longer the player should do a quicker animation and vice versa. I don't like the randomness.

Fix check swinging online and I'd just go back to how online was before. No more of this synching from user to user stuff. It causes too many weird glitches.

Enable manual catch for online and make it where you can't put your fielding difficulty on rookie. Include fielding difficulty for matchmaking or just leave it on Veteran/AS for every game.

More stadiums too and I want to see places like Coors have more of an impact on the game. It has a slight affect coded in the game, but I feel like it should be more drastic.

I would absolutely love to see the possibility of expansion built in to a revamped Franchise mode. Also as part of this I would absolutely love to see prices brought back in and actually have an effect on payroll and whatnot. Plus a Create-a-Ballpark feature which we know (thanks to that one interview earlier in the year) was high on this the list for 14.

I can think of few things that would be more amazing than building an MLB team from scratch and trying to grow it over the course of multiple iterations of MLB the Show.

In addition to that I would love to see logic improved across the board from trade, roster construction, lineup construction, bullpen usage, and free agency to in game decisions made by players.

Being able to see hr trot and celebration during fastplay.

Safeco roof to close

Kings court when Felix pitches.

Ball girls

Retired numbers

Fall leagues for younger and rehabbing players.

International signing period

Umpires: The umpires in this game need all new animations. Almost of the ball/strike and out/safe animations are over-exaggerated and unrealistic. They need to be toned down to match what real-life umpires look like.

I have and have had a growing wish list for a few years.

SOTS - bring them back for Ps4, add more slots for more music

Rosters - up roster spots to 105 so you can have 3 full minor league squads as well as a place to put prospects who should be low level - I hate bringing 19 year old prospects to AA and AAA when injuries occur.

Franchise Mode - ability to extend contracts in season. Ability to import players into a Franchise

Player Edits - bring back scruf for beards, be able to edit individual secondary positions.

Create a stadium would be great but probably unrealistic. Having dual stadiums for the retractable roof stadiums is necessary. I hate the Blue Jays playing 70% of their home games in long sleeves.

Ability to edit coaches faces, names and attributes. Also having bench and bullpen coaches would increase the pool of candidates if u make a change to your staff as well as add realism. Last bit on coaches is being able to reassign or promote them while under contract so it doesn't count against your budget.

This. Make it web-based like FIFA's Creation Centre, where you can import logos with image transparency, create your team roster and instantly share it with other players. This would add so much authenticity to historic teams.

# 75 JohnMcClaneTW @ 11/10/14 03:53 PM
I've said this in previous years but I think you should add to batting practice something that would benefit all players:

The ability to choose what pitch the pitcher will throw and its exact location where it will end up. It would help familiarize players with the break on sliders and curveballs, as well as help them recognize where a fastball or change-up will end up. It would be great to be able to consistently be able to see a slow curve (like Yu Darvish's) in order to pick it up better when playing real games.

# 76 PitholeCreek @ 11/10/14 03:56 PM
1) Retractable roofs are essential for me. 20% of major league teams play in stadiums with retractable roofs, and some of those teams play with the roof closed more than 50% of the time. Even if The Show doesn't get in-game roof closures, having the ability to start a game with a roof open or closed is a must-have. Not having a closed roof at Minute Maid Park is like not having the centre field scoreboard at Kauffman Stadium. A closed roof is an essential feature of some ballparks.

2) The ability to select the difficulty level that dynamic difficulty starts at. An experienced player shouldn't be required to start at Rookie.

3) Uniform accuracy. I realize that the developers are bound by the style guide, but there are some pretty clear errors that I have a hard time believing are attributable to the style guide.

It would also be nice to edit uniform combinations used by AI-controlled teams. If there are erroneous combinations, giving users the ability to fix them would resolve a lot of user gripes. As users aren't bound by specific combinations, the AI shouldn't be either.

If the game is going to have pullover uniforms, it should have a pullover model, rather than just reusing the button-down one.

4) A return of the classic batting practice. I loved having the ability to select specific pitches to see. I don't care for the RTTS practice modes.

I've read before that people don't know why we would need rain out's and then double headers.
I think it would be great. Having a game rescheduled a week or months later. Up to that day if your players are tired you have to decide who gets a break before the doubleheader and after you play the day game your players are tired and you have to split the team up for the night game.

Either make your game accurate in such an easy way--and let's be honest no one would actually do ANYTHING to the team if they corrected the uniforms it's just an old, stupid, and tired excuse for corporate handling--or people like me don't have an interest in the game anymore.

We have been dealing with numbers that need to be modified on jersey templates for years now. It's amateur hour at this point. Fix it. It makes your game look embarrassing in 2014 let alone 2015 when the new game hits.

The Twins just announced new jerseys with some gold in them. I suppose the away jerseys that have no stripe on the grey pants, despite the Twins having that stripe since five years ago, will still have no stripe and looking completely stupid. Other teams have mistakes that have not been corrected even remotely. for just as long

F the style guide. Get some dude to draw a line down the pants and to hell with it. 100% chance no ONE EVER CONTACTS because NO ONE CARES. Show guys need to stop this BS about the style guide like it's some kind of police battalion contract or something. Please tell me who is going to condemn or punish you if you make uniforms correct? Which lawyer is going to sue you because you made a uniform correct? It's all a bunch of crap and some exec doesn't want to push a little rule a bit even though there is literally zero chance of anything ever coming from it.

Wait, let's follow the rules guys and have our jersey's look 5 years old or just completely wrong. YAY! for the fans that pay 60 dollars for this stuff every year.
How about the MLB suing SCEA for $750 million? And then MLB winning the lawsuit and as part of the deal the MLB makes it so SCEA can never make a baseball game again. And then there will be no baseball until someone decides to pick it up. This is all very plausible to happen, it just happened with EA Sports and former NCAA players. EA used player likeness without their consent. So it is a big deal no matter how much you don't like it.

Let's be real, this has been the best sports sim of the last however many years now, and we have the best dev team in the sports gaming world creating a game that has mightily improved every single year with a few big leaps. HOWEVER, with next gen hardware (talking strictly PS4 gaming standpoint here), I feel that many of the issues nd gripes us fans have had for years now should, with some time, be completely addressed.

1.) Franchise - Like others have said, this mode lacks the most important thing with any sports sim - LIFE! I never feel engaged as if I'm in control of a team or trying to build a dynasty - there's nothing pulling you to go this way or that way, and no true rewards to the user or organization as a whole in the mode.

Aside from your basic off-season and winter events like free agency, draft picks, contracts (which is limited) - etc, Franchise is basically pick a team, spring training, start the season, play your games, maybe make some trades, play some more games, call some young people up, postseason, world series, offseason.

I just feel like there is nothing TRULY making me want to come back for another season, being that its franchise, and do it all over again. There's not a whole lot of immersion. I want to be able to do things like change field patterns at home, decide which advertisements are being displayed in my stadium as well as getting to decide WHERE THEY ARE PLACED, incentives included in contracts for players, some sort of pre-game and post-game show...

...show the commentators in the booth or some cheesy studio going over highlights nd show those fake interviews in the clubhouse where its just the players mouth moving and talking into the microphone...things like this which im sure others could add to would be massive step in the right direction with a mode thats been stale and lackluster for a couple years now.

2) Presentation and Commentary - I like Vasgersian, but how about dumping Karros and gettign Harold Reynolds. Regardless who is in the booth though, the flow of the commentary needs to be RE-DONE. Throw out all the old lines used in past variations and start fresh for a new console and those who still play on PS3. This severely needs to be worked on and the devs know this, maybe their resources are an issue or whatever but this would make the game feel brand new.

In terms of presentation....THE FRAME RATE DROPS ON THE CUTSCENES NEED...TO...STOP. Please, its PS4. Would be lovely if the entire game could at one point be 60fps. Oh damn. Other things such as national anthems with a big american flag in center field (after all it is americas past time), REAL FLY OVERS...(please?), flash bulbs in the crowd, how about an on field reporter?

These are some of the thoughts I've shared with others on here for years now and with the power of the PS4, I feel it's about time this brilliant and community-centered dev team should be able to accomplish sooner rather than later. More to come I'm sure haha, Cheers

I'll tell you how much of a chance you have of winning major money from this lawsuit..... ZERO.

Player likeness goes through Player Unions and major organizations. Not so with the jerseys and minor corrections. You don't have anywhere near the power of a player union to address. I would go so far as to say that unless you make a large color change to one of the jerseys there is not one person with a dedicated job who would notice or care.

You honestly think some dude is paid to go..... OMG they added that real life stripe to the Royal's jerseys in the right color. I'm calling the lawyer now guys! This is preposterous.

Right, you people have been drinking the Koolaid excuse for too long. This is why The Show is falling behind. Because people just accept what they are given with this game.

It's posts like this that have this fear mentality that are crazy. 750 million lol. You wouldn't make a dime if it came down to it. A corrected stripe on a jersey is worth no one's time. A player likeness where that player was not being paid or misrepresented? Completely different case.

Just saying. I'm not a garden gnome that buys this game every year because. If this team doesn't improve aspects of their game significantly then why bother. 60 bucks plus is a waste of money when I can't unsee these easily corrected errors. Who the hell wants to play with a baseball team all year with totally messed-up uniforms lol?

Somehow every other game gets around this style guide. 2K did it. Other sports games do it. At this point sticking to the ridiculous rules is hurting their game.

I won't even buy 15 if they still have outdated jersey templates. I'm just sick of this amateur stuff sorry. And that IS what it is. Amateur stuff. Stuff that is fixed by modders on PC within weeks not months or, rather more appropriate for this game, YEARS.
Yea what happened to 2K's baseball game, stopped being made. EA probably did the same. Are they still making a baseball game, nope. If you don't follow what the MLB says they can pull the license from you and no more game being made. And actually people would care if that stripe was not the way the company wanted it because they own the license for everything. That's what it is coming down to. SCE San Diego is scared that if they do something that MLB doesn't approve then they will lose the license.
