The sad thing is this is the most footage we've seen since the game has been announced. And FINALLY, other golfers will play along side you it looks like.

The animations are so poor and robotic and every golfer has the same swing? Smfh

I was just about to say, those swing animations are pretty choppy and completely lack rhythm. Although, in the game's defense, if you are controlling the swing w/ an analog input, perhaps it's just a reflection of what the stick inputs are? Anyway, EA's games always look fantastic in still photos, but almost invariably look much worse in motion (see: every "Madden" ever).

I watched the trailer again. I think the issue is the swing is stopping right at the top of the backswing for a split second, and that seems to throw the look of the swing off, whether these players are user controlled or not, it definetly is an eye sore. The player teaser showed none of that and were silky smooth just like in real life. As for swings looking the same, despite a few odd balls (I.e furyk) most swings are generally the same.

What's with the hitch at the top of everyone's swing? Is everybody Hideki Matsuyama now?

edit: loo, got beaten to it...

Well, still looks better than MY swing...

Some of the most honest words Ive read regarding EA games in a while. That said, I am kind of excited for this game, havent played video game golf in a while (and real golf tends to get ugly quick...). Day one purchase is doubtful but definitely a game I will be keeping my eye on.

I'd hold off on the impressions of the swing animations based on that video. If I recall from some of the information released earlier the hitch/release is determined by user input and this could be done by design.

My impressions and opinion of this game have been duly noted but I wouldn't take that swing to heart just yet.

How can a game that on this generation of consoles still struggle to get a players animation right??? Especially considering at most times the golfer is the only animated character on screen. EA took plenty of time out to bring golf to the Xbox One & PS4 yet we've still ended up with a big drop in Courses & Pros. This game may lay a building block for future iterations but for the time this games been in development I expected a little more.

Not exactly. There are 4 golfers and 4 caddies on that video along with hundreds of animated fans in the gallery. I'm with Kehlis, lets not judge the swing animations until we know if they were impacted by user input or not. My guess is those scenes are done with user input as I am pretty sure the AI is not capable of developing the exact scenes they were looking for.

My issue is moreso the lack of variety. How is it 2015 and they can't have 100-200 different swing styles in the game, including the unique styles for the players they license? Not even directly referring to this iteration. They haven't done this...ever lol

Couldn't be further from the truth.

Fully agree, the golfers and swings/stances are as plain as can be. Like the classic saltine cracker.

If you watch some of the short golfer intro videos they made, a couple were from the same exact angle and the only difference was the clothes/shoes/club (I think) and the face. Everything else exactly the same.

Very disappointing, but most ea sports games have always had issues with differentiating players and how they play. Definitely one of the weaknesses in their sports titles and a reason I find it hard to get immersed in their games. Becomes boring very quickly.

The swings/stances of golfers and what they are trying to achieve are very different. That's why there are so many swing coaches trying to get their guys to do different things. Aspects like this have to be included in a game so focused on individual play. To me this is just as important as having a lot of courses to play.

Look at these clips:

Fowler (:11 seconds in, pause at the top of swing for a good look) https://youtu.be/_fmqptzNT8c?t=11s

Spieth (1:20 in, pause at the top of swing for a good look): https://youtu.be/iaJOLCK8ns8?t=1m21s

Just one example, but obviously no where near the same.

To be fair, I guess no other golf game has individual swings tied to a player or different swing types, but for the PGA Tour officially licensed game not to have them is a real shame. All golf games need to incorporate a large amount of swing/stance types in their games.

Why so many trees on the course EA Sports? Chambers Bay literally has 1 lone tree that overlooks Puget Sound, so why are there so many trees in the game?

You really think they are going to motion capture 100-200 swings? Do you know how long and costly it is to do one? When you have to spend at least two full days per player to capture the motion and the particular artwork to capture each player, not to mention the expense and then scheduling each one individually, I can't say I agree. There is no PGA TOUR Players Association union that can be licensed like NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, etc.....

See my post above. Not going to happen. Golf is not like Madden, FIFA, BF4, CoD, etc. The Golf budget is a fraction of those other games......

Maybe not 100-200, but NBA2K has had at least a handful of unique jumper styles for quite some time now, so it certainly doesn't seem unreasonable to have at least 7-8 different semi-generic swing types. Although that's not my primary area of concern for the game by any means.

Read the last sentence of his divot makers post. Each golfer is licensed individually. If they don't want their swings in the game, their not bounded by a union. Same goes for courses. Not sure why this is such a hard concept for people to grasp.

Re read his post. He isn't asking for specific golfers likenesses.

Honestly, what golfer do you think is going to go through this whole process to get his likeness in the game, but then throw some sort of fit about having his swing mocapped? That is absurd to even think such a thing lol

And you're telling me they can't have people come in and imitate swings? Or have top amateur guys come in and get theirs mocapped? Come on now.

When referring to variations, I wasn't talking about getting all pros licensed. That is impossible, but trying to tell me they can't get 100 or so variations of golf swings in the game because of coding? That is laughable. This isn't like a football or a basketball game where there are literally thousands of physics based and contact related animations where players are interacting with one another in thousands of different ways and they all need to be coded individually. There are literally maybe 7-8 different types of swings a player may take that are absolutely necessary to capture. Driving, chipping, iron shot, putting, punch shot etc. I'd imagine with the technology, they could capture a lot of those relatively quickly.

pietasterp brought up 2K, which is a great example. You can include the Show in there as well. They have had hundreds of different generic shot and stance animations for some time now. The fact that we don't have that option, in a game where your swing is probably the one thing that makes you unique, is just incredibly lazy to me. But as long as it is EA, this is the type of effort that we will see.

Never actually been there but from what I see on TV it looks pretty good. Original mining company looks like it was cut into forest. Course built on property surrounded by trees with just the 1 tree in actual play.
