MLB The Show 16 News Post

For those of you following the story on MLB The Show 16 bans, SCEA has posted an update on the situation.

Quote:
Our goal for MLB The Show 16 is to maintain a fair and competitive game community. It is absolutely paramount for us that the integrity of our online play, particularly modes like Diamond Dynasty where so many of our fans invest so much of their time and passion, remain intact. As such, we are constantly monitoring the server for unusual or potentially exploitive behaviors.

We recently discovered a glitch in the Community Market was being taken advantage of to double user Stubs and cards. In many cases, this was apparently done hundreds of times. In addition to violating the terms of service, this conduct gives abusing players an unfair advantage over others, negatively impacting gameplay and the shared marketplace.

In order to restore balance as quickly as possible, we suspended approximately 200 user accounts that were exhibiting unusual behavior as we worked to diagnose and fix the exploit. Again, our top priority is to protect the broader community and the integrity of their experience with The Show. With the vulnerability now addressed, we’ve gone deeper into the telemetry and are reactivating select accounts.

As always, we will strive to improve our ability to communicate these types of situations as they arise and develop. We‘re grateful for the understanding and patience of the entire MLB The Show community, and for helping us make this the best place to play baseball.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email [email protected].

If you were one of the "approximately 200 user accounts" that were banned, let us know if your ban was lifted or not. No official word has been given on whether lifted users will receive any sort of compensation.

I'm glad to see things squared away..... however, I already avoided DD, card collecting & the such like the plague. This episode didn't do anything to draw me closer to playing. Like Knight says, except for the vault, I generally tend to shy away from online play, esp. vs strangers. And online is overpopulated with strange people. All in all, good job by Sony in the end, after a shaky start.

Now the unbanned will start agitating for free stuff/compensation. If they were banned unfairly, I actually don't blame them. What's disappointing to me is (1) what mysterious thing did people do to become a false positive? Hopefully these people finally get an explanation so they can avoid this happening again and (2) why would SDS come out so assuredly with Ramone roasting people publicly on Twitter (you did this 47 times for 3 million stubs) if there were possible holes in their telemetry data?

Hopefully there are lessons learned on all sides from this. Lessons for the banned that they cause a lot of collateral crap to happen for others (both the devs and the unbanned) just by their cheating existence; lessons for the unbanned in that they just need a little patience and perspective and things get settled as they should; lessons for the accusers who fell victim to a mob mentality with absolutely no data to go on.

Also good on SDS for not letting this drag into the holiday weekend for everybody involved, especially those banned in error.

I think that depends. They were trying to do the right thing for the vast majority of users (200 people is just a tiny, tiny drop in the bucket of MLB The Show users) and made a mistake. Should they have looked harder at their data before coming out with these bans---YES, of course they should have.

But, look at it this way, there were ~200 bans made, but we really don't know what portion of those bans are now being rescinded. If they made 100 errors out of 200 bans, then yeah the optics aren't good and they should rightly be criticized. If a dozen or so people out of 200 got reinstated then SDS doesn't look quite as goofy, imo.

So much this.

So basically it was an "oh crap some are exploiting this" and then somehow normal behavior looks a lot like exploit behavior (I don't understand how this is the case, but I don't play DD or use the market) so people get caught up in the net.

And NOW they are going to look close at it (what?) and then have to go back on the bans...that never should have been placed. Okay.

Sounds like they need a better system for catching true exploits so they don't have to go the "ban first, then investigate" route.

And I agree with the Twitter. That's unprofessional anyway (even if true, why even put it out there...if you know he did that, just leave him banned and move on. Why respond?) and, like you said, if the data really is flawed or otherwise potentially muddied - why be so "certain"?

Not even an apology.

And when since do they care about competitive balance? Oh yeah, when potential income may have been affected.
Maybe Sony decided their message to the banned was heard & understood.
Maybe Sony decided a few of the banned didn't require a permanent ban, & those few whose ban was lifted had served enough sentence, & there wasn't anything to apologise for.
I disagree entirely with the joke organisation part, though. I guess this means you won't be buying next years game?

This is probably the approach they will go with in any case, except for perhaps the truly innocent ban victims.

It will be interesting to see what (if anything) they compensate the truly innocent that got caught up mistakenly. Or will they be too worried about "picking and choosing" so everyone (or no one) gets any compensation?

My ban was one of those lifted. Whoo! Thank you, SCEA and possibly Ramone (if you played a part in that).

To let everyone know, since that's being discussed, I don't want anything for free - even though I wasted like 5 hours earlier starting over in building a nice little team of silver and gold players and recreating my uniforms. haha

The only thing I would like is for people to not jump to conclusions in instances like that.

I made about 12,000 stubs in about 3 hours off and on and built myself a nice little team that I had fun playing with. Hopefully, I didn't activate any unknown exploits creating and cancelling orders. I had about 16 pages of transaction in about 2 hours worth of flipping.

I would love to play with lower rated players (bronze and silver players), but playing with those types of players in the category I'm in (with around a 1,900 rating) would be way too tough.

If any legit somewhat to very skilled players want to play with bronze, silver and/or even a couple of gold players, feel free to message me and/or add me for the PS4 version. My PSN is Saved__By__Grace (there are two underscores in between each word for a total of 4 underscores).

I hate the way this was handled and here is why, first off I was born in the 50s. The Apple computer I had in school was two pieces of wood with three rods ran thru them and apples you slid back and forth. We didn't have calculators but we did get a slide rule that I am still confused on.

With that being said, I don't play online and never have but if I did and unless it was really obvious I probably would not have known I was doing anything wrong. People flip stocks, cars and houses all the time. I only go online to update patches, download a roster or two. I am assuming the number in the upper right of the screen is stubs? Or maybe it is experience points, I am not sure.

This years game other than the graphics improvements to me has a lot of things that need corrected. The little things theme sure got lost along the way this year and now apparently there is a flaw in the Sony stub market. I hope they concern their selves with at least another patch for the game as quick as they jumped on their own bug.

Just my two cents.

I was one of the wrongfully banned players. I find this whole fiasco on par with how they have handled all of the show's problems so far this year. They really need to find a new cover boy with some better PR skills as what they have now is nothing but rude and condescending. As a poster on TCN put it, it took me 5 minutes to figure out what took them a full week. I don't want any compensation, no packs, no stubs, just an apology. There's a laugh.

I'm happy that it's getting ironed out and some of the bans are being lifted.

By cover boy do you mean Ramone?

Maybe once they figure everything out and lift all the bans that they need, they'll make an apology tweet or something.

There were still plenty of folks that are justifiably banned and those people are still crying wolf.

Man, all the people who said everyone banned was a bona-fide cheater and they all got what they deserved look pretty silly now.

I knew all of these people didn't cheat, at least not willingly. Good for the people who got unbanned that were wrongly accused.

To the people who said all parties were guilty because SDS said so, shame on you. Innocent until proven guilty is how the real world works. Not guilty because the guys who make your favorite game say so.

Congrats again to the guys that got unbanned. Justice is usually always served. Happy gaming!

That's Ramone's personal Twitter. If people want to seek him out in a public way, he can respond however he wants in a public way. It's not like he was tweeting from The Show official account calling people out. That would be unprofessional.

Just because we have unprecedented ways to access people through personal channels doesn't mean that relationship is there magically.

My Ban was lifted. Jaytal6 PS3. Banned, not suspended. They describe it as a suspension in the explanation to the community, but on my console and on Twitter, it was an irreversible ban. I got rid of my game because I had enough of them and figured I was permanently banned. After the ban was reversed, I needed to get another game disk. They never responded to my emails, twitter, and banned me from the forum so I couldn't interact with them there. I don't think it's unreasonable that they compensate me for the cost of a game disk. If they had said that my account was being suspended pending an investigation into my market activity, I would have waited for the process to complete. All indications were that I was not coming back.

I get you are mad, but why would they buy you a new disk. You weren't even banned one week. They didn't make you get rid of your disk. Did you sell it or throw it away?

Even if you were banned you could have played offline which is what a large group does anyways.

Someone accused of a crime spends nights in jail during their trial. If they are not guilty they aren't compensated for that week or few days. The Show isn't going to compensate people who are mad they were banned for like 5 days

Dang dude still not showing sympathy for the falsely accused? This was obvious from the get go that many were being unjustly banned. Just eat the crow and move on....alot of ppl looked silly blaming all thise banned.

Anyways I dont think SDS owes them anything but an apology. It would not be fair if they got like 20k n stubs and those that were not banned get nothing. I have not even played since Monday anyways and this whole thing was a mess as Ive been trying to help those banned.

Tons of problems here so I hope SDS learns to be more communicative in the future and I still think this game is amazing. Hope we can put it past us and enjoy the game!

Why would I eat crow? I laid out a reasonable hypothetical that lines up. You were banned less than 7 days. You're acting like your civil liberties were taken away. I'm happy for the people who can play again but some perspective would be nice

Looks like they unbanned everyone of the 200.
