Critically acclaimed franchise to give fans early start to this year’s MyCAREER experience, ability to play collegiate games and more!

2K today announced “The Prelude,” a free downloadable experience for NBA 2K17, the top-rated and top-selling NBA video game simulation series*, which will be available on September 9, 2016. For the first time in NBA 2K history, gamers – both new and old – will get to start their MyCAREER experience prior to the game’s launch on September 20, 2016 on Xbox One and PlayStation®4 computer entertainment systems. Gamers who download “The Prelude” will choose from multiple authentic Division I collegiate programs and have the ability to boost their stock for the NBA Draft. Additionally, “The Prelude” experience will include enhanced MyPlayer personalization through new mobile phone face scan technology via the MyNBA2K Companion App, and an all–new tutorial mode in 2KU, featuring 2016 USA Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski (“Coach K”).

“The Prelude was designed specifically to introduce new fans to our franchise, and give them an introduction to our legendary MyCAREER mode that puts the user at the center of an epic basketball story,” said Greg Thomas, President of Visual Concepts. “Veterans of NBA 2K will also love getting a head start on their MyCAREER, so when the game launches they can be ready to jump in and compete.”

During “The Prelude”, players will watch their draft stock fluctuate dynamically based on their performance across the participation of multiple authentic college games. In true cinematic form, they’ll also catch a glimpse of exclusive MyCAREER scenes through their customized avatar, which include interactions with high school coaches, teammates, and more. Players’ in-game performance during college play will ultimately influence where they are drafted upon entering the league in NBA 2K17.

“The incredible excitement during the first week of NBA 2K16’s launch showed us there was an opportunity to connect with even more fans prior to the formal release of NBA 2K17,” said Alfie Brody, VP of Marketing for NBA 2K. “We think we’ve given our passionate community something special with this year, and can’t wait to see the response from not only existing fans, but new ones as well.”

Included in “The Prelude” is 2KU, a tutorial featuring Coach K, focused on fundamental basketball strategies including pick and roll execution, proper defensive positioning, ball movement, boxing out, court awareness and more. Gamers can also use the MyNBA2K17 iOS and Android companion app to scan their facial likeness into their MyCAREER avatar within minutes. This new mobile phone camera fan scan technology serves as the perfect introduction to the custom experience, as players begin playing MyCAREER. Additionally, after September 16, 2016 gamers will be able to purchase and download playable “all-time great” teams for each of the playable colleges as well as special collegiate MyTeam cards representing legendary players.

The NBA 2K17 Standard Edition will be available in both digital and physical formats for $59.99 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems, and Windows PC platforms on September 20. The NBA 2K17 Kobe Bryant Legend Edition will be available in digital and physical formats for $79.99 on Xbox One and PlayStation®4 system. Also available for pre-order is the NBA 2K17 Kobe Bryant Legend Edition Gold offering fans the ultimate value at $99.99 with all of the regular NBA 2K17 Legend Edition contents plus bonus items. All fans who pre-order any version of NBA 2K17 will receive their copy at Early Tip-Off four days early, September 16.

Why would they specify "Coach K from Team USA" then?

It's possible, but I hope 2K isn't that silly. They know most people would believe it's for the Olympics.

Also, why leave a huge cliff hanger like that for 2KU which is basically a practice mode? I am pretty positive it's the Olympics, but if it's not, and it's 2KU, a lot of people will be disappointed.

Exactly this! No reason they'd put something like that just to then be like "Oh hey he's gonna be the instructor on 2KU" especially when we already knew that. It has to be that you can play for Team USA, if not then that would be a very stupid move IMO.

I am sure they did bro. With them doing ESports for ProAm and it being as successful as it was, I believe they definitely will improve on it. I am pretty sure we'll have commentary this year. Just hope they are going in the direction of 2K11s Crew Mode.

Let's just hope they learned from their history of overhyping hugely underwelming stuff. Oldgen 2k14 "crews" had a ton of buildup, as did the disappointing Spike Lee storyline, while stuff like the Prelude trailer basically only had a couple tweets.

Classic college teams in 2k? That's crazy. Never expected this. I wonder if it's the same colleges as last year or if they added more.

One thing that I really liked about the trailer was the my player voice. He sounded like an average guy. Last year the voice sounded like someone from the hood or something.
no, last years voice over guy sounded like a guy TRYING to sound like a guy from the hood. which is actually worse then a real guy from the hood. It was bad acting on his part. to be honest all the other characters in 2k16 living the dream could act except for the main character. But I agree, I like this guys voice. sounds like a normal guy not TRYING to hard. I wonder when will they allow us to either 1 use our own voices(possible. especially using our headset mics or Kinect(xbox one). we could easily record our voice saying the same lines as the main character and have those put in there. or give us a choice of a 10 different voices. give me a few brothas from around the US, west coast, east coast, southern, Midwest. give me a couple of white guys from all over. then give me guys with an accent from a Spanish speaking country or two. same with Asian, etc. it could be done.

you guys are naïve. I'm not saying I'm not hoping for the same thing you are. but you have to be realistic. 2k is like other game devs too. they do hype things up and leave you disappointed.

so don't act like this couldn't be one of those cases.

on the other side. if they already have all team usa teams. they would also need to have all or atleast the main international squads in the game as well(do they?) if they do. then you can play with team usa. OR they could go another route and not worry about the other teams and just have you scrimmage vs team usa like the young guys do on that USA select team. this could be cute and all but if it doesn't add attribute points or something I can use for my player. the hype of that will die quickly.

but we know that shouldn't be the case because guys like deandre Jordan should not be as quick/fast and jump as quick/high as he does for his size.

yet he's a real basketball player.

draymond green is an all around pf. that's quick and has excellent passing ability.

but they have blake griffin's picture as a low post guy. when in reality blake is similar to draymond just that he has more hops, is taller, and he posts up more often. meaning blake griffin can pass very very well too. they have him running a lot of the plays as well. will they allow you to create a blake type of monster? probably not.

can I create a cousins type of player? probably not. even though his picture is there. what about a bron type? big as a PF, strong as a PF, quick as a SG, handles like a SG, point guard passing vision, hops like blake griffin.

I noticed the scoring guard option (that wasn't the exact name but that's basically what it was). that guys passing cap was lower than the slasher. that aint right.

just because derozan and klay are not great passers. it doesn't mean guys like kobe were not very good passers and super scorers too.

again, they leave you making guys that are not like a lot of the guys that are in the nba or have been in the nba. unless you want to pick one style and stick with that. but not a multi styled player.

The reason they do this is for one its easier to pull off. for two, they still haven't figured out how to create the proper contact animations/physics/movements etc. where you can have a deandre Jordan. super athletic big, super fast/quick. but still destroy him on the block or in the paint with a guy like cousins who have moves down low. usually in 2k games if you have a super athletic big he will dominate even if the other guy has way more moves down low. that's not realistic.

The pros of this are, I control every aspect within my ability, I don't have to worry about someone cheesing the CPU to get wins, or constantly playing the cavs/gsw. I get to play in good solid games online every night.

It's funny that you call out MyPark/Pro-Am about catering to kids, yet in those modes, to be successful you have to be a good teammate, or be pretty insane on the sticks, sometimes you need to just be a role player, whereas the 5v5 online, it's catering to someone that constantly needs the ball in their hands.

I actually have a teammate on my pro-am team, that is content with being a true role player, he gets 1-3 shots a game, and plays defense. We told him that's what we needed, not everyone is getting 20 shots a game, and he accepted it and tries his best within that role.

Create a legend is lame in my opinion, why would I want to play as an overpowered legend? It gets boring in MyCareer dropping triple doubles nightly, I want a challenge which is where the Pro-Am and Park come into play.

Due to people having to work together, very few times you play against a team that can cheese you, on 2k16 with 1000 roughly Park games, I've only felt like I've been had a couple times due to **** mechanics, and over 100 Pro-Am games, maybe 5-6 times. I will never find that in 5v5 online.

Create a Legend wasn't about taking a star player and making them better. The true fun of the mode was taking a late 1st round pick or a second round one and working to turn them into a solid starter or even a star. It took me longer to get that than to take a MyPlayer from scrub to GOAT.

Selecting a top player in Create a Legend was the type of thing cheesers do. In the end I'm not NBA material so MyPlayer just doesn't suspend the disbelief like playing as Georges Niang, Deyonta Davis, or Demetrius Jackson does.

I'll be very disappointed if we don't get to choose out go and shot base after all this talk about being unique. It already looks like we won't be able to upgrade every attribute individually. We don't need another year of Lamarcus Aldridge jumpshots on every character. It used to be fun messing around with different shots until you found the one that was just right.

Exactly and another good part imo was that the mode wasn't tied to the servers. So whenever (too often) they were down you could still play it, whereas with myplayer your file would basically be lost (no more online) if you played it offline. Anyway, i had three files and i enjoyed all of them a lot:

- jimmer fredette who i pretty much turned into current steph curry
- travis leslie (who?) into d-wade lite
- and kyrylo fesenko iirc into shaq lite

I didn't necessarily get their ratings on that level but just enough to have them be able to perform like that. Good times.

I had a few.

Kendall Marshall
Sam Young
Draymond Green (He was a 64 in 2K13)
Jared Jeffries (My fav, I'm a hoosier homer)
Miles Plumlee (But I totally suck @ center)

As I think about it: While I agree that players should be somewhat capped online, I think that builds should be good at about two things as opposed to one, at least offensively. Like, what happens when you have, say, a sharpshooter build, and 2K decides it's going to turn your jumper off (like it loved to do almost randomly this year)? Same thing with a slasher. You go up against an insanely good rim protector, now you're just dead weight out there, and your defender can now harass other players because your player can't make wide open warm-up jumpers.

Yeah, you'll say 'well, move the ball around.' While I agree with that, it leaves too little room to correct your rhythm because you won't be able to really drive, and that leaves room for your defender to step back a bit, and even double team other players. You really can't do much of anything else now except play defense, because you're nothing more than a body out there, and the sometimes harsh caps severely limit what you're able to do.

thank you thank you thank you. finally someone speaking my language. this is what i can't stand about mycareer. they turn your jumper completely off. brick fest for wide open 3's and mid range shots. so if you're a slasher or just not a bona fide 3pt shooter. you will be worthless on offense.
