MLB '09: The Show Preview (PS3)

If I used baseball terms to describe last year's MLB: The Show, I would say it was a solidly hit ball that drove in a few runs.

After playing the demo for MLB 09: The Show, I think the term I might use to describe this year's game is walk-off grand slam.

Now, this is a demo, and I know that, but the stage is set for what might be the best sports game to come around in quite some time. There are lingering questions, such as how the stat engine will work and how good the Franchise mode improvements are, among other things.

However, make no mistake about it, this game will be money -- pure, unlimited, beautiful money.

The stadium graphics and lighting effects are just beautiful...

From the stadium graphics, to the stunning lighting, to the animations, the MLB 09 demo looks prettier than any sports game I have ever played. At one point, I also had to remind myself that demos usually do not look as good as the final product.

As for the gameplay, well, I do not want to go into too much detail because I do not want to spoil my review, which will be coming when the game releases, but I am very stoked about the overall gameplay.

This year, SCE Studios San Diego has almost completely nailed the game of baseball. However, I do say that with an asterisk since I have only played until the fourth inning (that is when the demo shuts off).

Either way, some of the little details you start to notice are mind boggling, almost to the point of making you wonder if the guys at SCE San Diego ever went home during the past year.

Let me just stick with a very basic part of baseball, the pitcher/catcher interaction. Watching the catcher give you a sign and set up for the pitch is just beautiful. It is a harmonious movement that makes you feel like you are a part of something real.

That is realism folks.

MLB '09: The Show looks like a must have for 2009.

The ball is no longer just a white blob moving quickly through the baseball diamond; now you can now make out the seams on the ball as it rolls and flies about.

Fielding is wonderful. It feels much crisper, and the new tag animations are a huge step up from '08. As a whole, the fielding just feels so much better than last year -- it is really night and day.

Hitting also feels better. Although not much has been said about hitting improvements, I think something has changed when it comes to the timing of the pitch/bat/swinging area of the game. Yet, it is something that is subtle and hard for me to pick out at this point. My working theory is that players might be swinging faster, as it seems like I have just a split second more time to decide whether or not to swing and still be successful. Then again, maybe the game is coming to me?

Without being able to see the effects of fatigue all that well, the jury is still out on pitching. Still, from what we get in the demo, it appears that you will definitely have to be on your game because the meter is definitely tougher.

When I play this demo, the big thing that jumps out at me is that SCE is "there" -- at least from a gameplay perspective. They seem to have the next-gen sports game we have been waiting for, and now it is only a few weeks away from release. But do not get me wrong, there are still reasons to hold back our enthusiasm -- you never know what crazy things could go wrong with a release, as many of us already know.

But at this stage, MLB 09: The Show may end up being similar to the 1927 Yankees. In other words, the game will obviously succeed, but how many records will be broken along the way?

Great read.

I also agree with the hitting. I've been playing '08 non-stop since its release, but I was early on the majority of swings in this demo.

Man. I can't wait to get home from work to fire up the demo again!!!

I'm with ya. In fact, The Show is the top reason I will never go back to 360.

For some reason, I always thought that the MLB games were available on on both the XBox and the PS2. Is that not the case?

Good article.

Can anyone recall a more anticipated sports game in recent history? I can't remember ever knowing a game was going to be this good 2 - 3 weeks before the release. Obviously, there is always the chance of unforeseen game killers(well, probably not), or at least some minor annoyances. And while no game is perfect I'm ready to experience virtual baseball perfection come March.

The lighting is unreal the only problem that I saw was when pitching from the outfield or pitcher view the pitcher is way smaller than the catcher and hitter. I can't wait till march

I'm going to go download it now. Look, all these stunning visuals are great, but the need for decent simulation is paramount in any baseball game. How does a guy bat against LHPs? Why is Johan Santana throwing 70% curveballs when in reality he uses his changeup and fastball almost exclusively? I could go on, but those are the kinds of questions I have.

I am pretty sure it would not be allowed on the 360 since 2k owns the rights to MLB games. Only reason they can still make it now is because Sony is a sponsor of major league baseball.

Wow!! Up there with NHL 09 graphically and simulation. Some observances ( minimal stuff ) I noticed was the fans walking behind home plate walk to the bottom of the aisle, turn around and go back up one after another. Also there was a moment when the announcer was showing a graphic for the top innings pitched pitchers from the previous season and Cole wasn't on the list , Also the year said 2007. I understand this isn't a finished product but just thought it was worth mentioning in case of overlooks. Can't wait for March 3!! Great Job!!!

Actually, I don't think it has anything to do with Sony being a sponsor of MLB.

The license that 2K has is an "exclusive 3rd party license". This means that 2K is the only company that can make an MLB licensed game for all consoles (and PC). The agreement still allows 'First Party Development', hence Sony can make a game for Sony Consoles (PS3, PS2, PSP). If they chose to, Micro$oft could make an MLB game for the 360, Nintendo could make a game for Wii etc...but the Micro$oft game couldn't be ported to PS3 or Wii or vise versa.

Now, Sony could make "The Show" for 360 (and Wii) if they didn't use any MLB stadiums or players. They'd have to use fictional characters and locations, or at least players that aren't part of the MLBPA (That was how EA was able to release the NCAA baseball title).

Getting a little off topic here, but I have to agree with baa7 on the NHL game. While it is "pretty", and a very good "game" (probably the best to date), it's not a very good representation of the real life game.

But you know what? I'm okay with that for some reason. I can't explain it, but I'm much more forgiving on the NHL title than I am on the MLB game...which is counter-intuitive since (being Canadian) I'm much more familiar with hockey. The NHL game is just that "a game", but the MLB title is more of 'an experience'.

I'm rambling. Time for more coffee

I just skimmed the article, but The Show looks solid again this year. Don't know if it'll be "the best sports game in some time", but I'm sure it will be decent.
Please, 2K, make MLB 2K9 decent, so we 360 gamers don't feel so bad after The Show comes-out!

Yes, I understand the exclusive license that 2K has for 3rd party baseball games. I was just thinking (hoping?) that IF 2K ever gave up the license, then Sony would make The Show for the 360. For some reason, I thought that those games that 989 made for PS2 (Gameday, MLB, etc.) were also made for the XBox. That's what got me hoping.

Oh well...

Now that I've played the demo 7-8x I've really got to say that the NEW pitching meter is pretty decent. In years past it was pretty easy to go full meter and paint the corners, not this year. I do notice that if you leave the pitch up in the zone or if it gets to much of the plate....WHACK!!! Just like the real deal.

The pitches seem to come at you a little quicker, may be some of the batting timing some posts are referring too. Otherwise looks a little more polished graphically than 08, not sure how that's possible as 08 has the WOW factor still.

In the games I played here were the big things that I noticed. When hitting as a power hitter and taking a power swing it seems the fielders drop the ball a litle too much. I like the new addition of this, just hope it's cleaned up a little come release day.

I don't see a lot of new from 08 with the exception of some cutscnes. My favorite to date has to be as the Phillies I was turning a double play. Rollins to Utley and Utley drops the ball on the transition to 1st. The ump called the runner OUT and Mgr of the Rays JOE MADDON comes out for a heated argument. Was just really cool!!! Feel you should have a little more control on what you want to argue and how much.

I also wish you could get a right handed pitcher in the game, did the bean the hitter thing but you cannot get ejected on the demo. There is some pushing and shoving amongst the catcher and batter but nothing to overly get excited about.

The celebrations at game end are better but again leaves me wanting a little more. Top finish to date was as the Phillies down 3-2 with one out, runner at 3rd and 2nd. Ryan Howard ripped one down the 1st base line to win it. Upon scoring winning run the cut scene went immediately to Howard, then to the runner as players came out of the dugout.

I don't want to wish life away, but man I wish it was March 3rd already, ugh!!!

I saw a great "animation" today. With runners at first and third, I grounded the ball to second and into a double-play. I forgot to send the guy at third (Rollins) home thinking he was going on contact.

He stayed instead of scoring, and while the broadcast team talked about it, he was getting yelled at by the third base coach who was pretty upset. Then Rollins put his head down.

I'm pretty sure that SCEA mentioned that the transition is 'sped up' a bit for the purposes of the demo. They wanted to make sure we saw the entire day to night transition within the 4 innings.

As far as sun/moon/stars...I don't know about that. Might be something that's coming in future versions?

Nice read man...I had no idea the demo was up, downloading it now though... MLB '08 almost won Sports Game of the Year by you guys so it's seems like this one is no question to get a crack at the title again.
