IS NBA Live 14 as bad everybody Claiming it is.
Posted on November 20, 2013 at 06:43 PM.
I now the internet is fulled with Negatived review and negative feedback on EA Sports new released NBA Live 14. I would go into the history of NBA live going back to the failed release of NBA Elite 11 but let's save that for a another Blog.

From all the feedback i been hearing from the community saying it looks like a ps2 game (False), it very slugish (Okay) it doesn't play like 2k (WAIT!!!!). Of course it doesn't play like 2k does that make it bad not necessarily. That because it isn't 2k it a different basketball experience. To everybody defense NBA live 14 is Miles maybe years behind NBA 2k14 in the looks department. But you can identify every player buy looks alone, True the NBA Live 14 LBJ Look nothing like LBJ in real Life, that more of a nitpick then a problem but worth pointing out tho. My point is that all your favorite player are in NBA live 14 so is it a game destroyer if all player don't look exactly like there Real life counter parts.

Anyways like I was saying NBA Live 14 isn't like 2k. So should people write it off just because it doesn't play like the game your use to (NO). NBA live 14 isn't a game you can just jump in and play. Personally i think learning something new is part of the fun of video games. True there isn't a practice mode in NBA live 14. But there is still way's for you learn the game. For example you can turn off all the rules and put the CPU on rookie. That's a very solid way to learn how to play from the dribbling moves down to the defense and the pay off will be very rewarding once you get all the moves down.

But it's seem like the only positive thing reviewer & fans alike got to say about NBA Live 14 is the ESPN Presentation Minus the Commentary. I must say the commentary is flat out awful. Jeff van & Mike Breen do not talk about or keep up with the action on the court. Other then that NBA Live 14 does give a very good ESPN feel while your playing NBA live 14.

Overall NBA live 14 as Rough Edges what game doesn't, And yes NBA Live 14 isn't on NBA 2k14 level. But judging it just because it doesn't play or look like NBA 2k14 isn't a fair judgment. If your happy with what NBA 2k offer in basketball. Then there is no reason for you to look at this game non the less play it. Stay in your comfort zone. But if your dissatisfied in what 2K has been delivering for the past 4 years. Then go ahead give NBA live 14 a try. I recommend you go into it with the clear mind that NBA Live 14 is a different Basketball experience and it's in a building a foundation & creating a identity process. But NBA live 14 has something to offer to basketball fans. It's a Fully Featured Basketball Game. Also with a pretty big hill to clime but at the same time tho if your looking for a fun basketball game to help you get away. Then I'm sure NBA Live 14 can do that. Don't Knock it before you try it.

@TheRealHST are you actually trying to compare a Video game to a car...... NBA live 14 has work to do.... but just don't write it off just cuz the game don't look like how you want it.....Most people have done that....if u want a great basketball experience go out side and play it....it only needs to be enjoyable....live 14 isn't what 2k is...that what people want....... if your fine with what 2k is offering stay with it. But if NBA live 14 Sparks your interest try it....u can't compare video games to buying a car....no comparison .

It was always going to be a lose-lose for LIVE. If they didn't release, we'd call them out for it. Now that it's out, we complain that it's not as good as 2K. I think it has its value. Yes, it's a rough game but at least it's playable. The best part is that EA can only go up from here. Hopefully, they take the negative criticism and build a better product. The biggest fault was the omission of a proper tutorial/practice mode. If only they could patch that in, but luckily a lot of the graphical and gameplay bugs can and (hopefully) will be fixed. I can promise you that the guys at 2K didn't brush off LIVE. You can be certain that they are playing it, learning from it and finding even more ways of making their game better...this is absolutely fantastic for us hoops fans.

@TheRealHST i've been playing these..games since n64 ....yea there is problems and weirdness...but there is potential.. instead of everybody writing it off for what it isn't..see it for what it is.....ea first had to release nba live 14...next is 2 compete....everyone claim low expectation but ends up with high disappointment....live might not be the game everyone want be it a game u can enjoy.....

@yaboythecrib, Why are you so hurt if others don't like the game or, as you say, "write it off?" NBA LIVE sucks and I don't want it. Yes, I recognize the need for competition (although, we can argue the point from 2K's perspective they haven't rested on their laurels. They've created the best basketball games over the last three years with zero competition from EA), but if you're gonna come out with a sub-par game then expect to be blasted for it. And make no mistake that that is just what NBA LIVE is, a sub-par basketball game.

And TheRealHST is right, there's no excuses for it. EA has had years to develop this game. The fact that NBA LIVE has come out this way is indefensible. So no, I don't want it. But I'm not writing it off, either. Not wanting a sub-par product =/= writing it off, and I resent people pleading with me to give NBA LIVE a chance "just because." I have limited funds in my wallet, and my hard-earned money goes towards products that are worth the investment.

@Celebrated Im not hurt... i just don't think the game is as bad as others are claiming....i believe NBA 2k has something to do with it. 2k is so gd that there is no room for error with EA or room to grow...it has to be gd right away anything less is sub par.....that unfair...Live 14 fans aren't denying the issue & problems but they aren't saying the game is unplayable cuz it is... Kobe Bryant didn't become great form day one...give live sometime & room to improve...u guy aren't wrong for the way ya'll feel about... but neither am i.....

Live is a realistic playing game of basketball. It seems like people are just spoiled by eye candy, people write Live off because it doesn't have enough animations, personally I think 2k has too much animations. When they go to the hoop in Live they actually have to be smart about what they do instead of a 2 man animation helping them out, it means you have to create space and think like a basketball player.

In 2k the animations think for you, you could be at the elbow with a running start and press square and the animation will carry you to the hoop with something you can smile about. In live you press square from the free throw line you're going to get what someone who shot from the free throw line in real life would get, a jump shot. Or a running layup if you manually choose so, but no animation is choosing for you.

2k is a good/fun game of basketball don't get me wrong, but it's too animation based for me. I feel like my basketball I.Q has little impact on the outcome of the game. In 2k I feel like I have to tell myself not to cheese because after playing for sometime eventually I learn what animations are best for what situation, and in a competitive atmosphere it's just frustrating because if a guy starts exploiting the animations it put someone who wants to play fair at a disadvantage. Since the PS2 days post moves and baseline layups have always been high percentage shots in 2k, and it looks like nothing has changed, they just added a variety of animations so hopefully you have better chance of blocking the shot, but it's just animations covering up flaws. I could go down the list, I played 2k heavy and without fail I would always learn the animations, whether it was tapping square behind someone on a fastbreak right before they go for the layup in 2k8 to get the knock the ball off their knee out of bounds animation, or 2k10's up and unders in the post. 2k has always had/has exploits because the game is so animation heavy.

Live 14 on the other hand I feel is a free flowing game of basketball, and the end result of a mistake is more often than not your fault. I have yet to see someone cheese in Live 14, although Live may be missing all the animations and has uncanny physical interaction sometimes it happens to play a more skill based and basketball I.Q oriented game then 2k in my opinion. Instead of saying certain situations call for certain animations Live puts the power in your hands. Physics and momentum play a role in Live, although all the animations aren't all there yet the fact is they have the foundation ready to be layered on. Crossing someone in Live really feels rewarding while crossing someone in 2k feels like you got the best of the animation. I think if people actually took the time to learn NBA Live they'd realize it really forces you to think basketball. Whether it's exploiting mismatches, throwing the bounce instead of the lob, calling for the pick, or Isoing against the bigger player live really gives you the control to have the chess match on the court.

Like someone above said, Lives biggest mistake was not incorporating some sort of mandatory tutorial mode, but they have to live with it now. Also, I think the $60 dollar price tag is a little steep when your trying to take prove yourself, I think around $40-45 would have been much more acceptable.

Overall, I think Live is a good game, but it's also a different game, and I think anyone who's ever played organized basketball or coached can see the basketball aspects Live offers. Not a terrible game at all.

Now don't let the above post make you think I'm a Live fanboy I just see the potential in what the game is doing, and as someone who finds most of his sports game enjoyment through competitive gaming I'm very interested to see what the future holds for Live if they continue on the same path.

2k has always fulfilled my basketball fix, it's just I want a game where my basketball knowledge actually helps me out, and can even put me at a great advantage. Online matches are like facing different coaches and if I have the mind of Phil Jackson going up against high school coach minded opponents it should play a role in my success. Sometimes you can have the entire arsenal but just get flat out, out-coached. I see Live going towards a chess match type of game, where once the controls are second nature your basketball brain has to lead you to the finish line.

It's pretty bad dude.

I didn't think it was as bad. Yes, the controls and shot animations need work. The visuals, not up to 2K standards, weren't terrible. I like the rotation of the ball, the sounds from the court and stadium.

Not great but not awful. They fix the shot animations and controls it can be a decent baller.

Not great just awful. Really awful. It reminds me if Microsoft basketball on the PC back in the late 90s.
First off a Lott of games come out for the first time and don't suck. I mean games like watch dogs, destiny, titanfall, all will be first run games and none will be given a pass because someone is trying to justify a purchase.
I want comp so the quality of the games are pushed to the limits. EA has a formula for sports titles. Its been four years in the making and it is a poor game.
EA will throw money at the problem by trying to buy more exclusive deals, but as long as we buy the best games we will win.
Just take your live to game stop and trade it for 2k14. Its actually pretty good. They've expanded the my career mode. It plays similar to the current gen version, but with a better dribbling and passing experience.
As far as online cheese. Play with people you know. Some people only care about winning. The truth of the matter is how you win is just as important to winning. If that were not true then we would never play anything but all-pro because we would win.
The EA producer knows the game is bad. Read his apology.

@CoachDavid Once EA Get over the visual hump....they will be fine..... They got the fundamentals of basketball down only think left is to improve the look.....i own NBA 2k14 as fun as that game is....that game has it share of issue.....Ok NBA 2k14 is fun but it get on my nerves.....EA is just in a visual crisis That.... all 2k problem are nitpicks.....beef those visuals up and they 'll be fine...Trust me....

the game is awful ...its funny how pepole try to compare it to 2k ...2k is 100 miles ahead of live right now ...but u have a few guys that will try to find something to say like "MAN LIVE MENUS AND ARENA SOUNDS ARE BETTER THEN 2K" LOL ..THEY IGNORE THE FACT THAT THE GAME IS AWFUL AND SHOULDNT BE A NEXT GEN TITTLE FOR 60 BUCKS ...

This game is awful. I've played organized basketball all the way up to the Jr. College level and Live is missing so much it's hilarious. I do agree that 2K has some cheese involved in their games, but all games do. That's why they're video games. I literally spun and and got to the hoop every time down court in Live 14 during the demo. I purposely did this 5 straight possessions with Kyrie Irving, so major cheese is involved in that game as well.

The real issue with Live is who's making the game. Almost everyone on these boards agree that Live 10 was their best game since around 04 or 05. Just so happens that the 1 year lead designer of that game was 2K's Mike Wang. He went back to 2K the next year because EA was not interested in making a sim game and it was to hard to get things done. Since then 2K has released the GOAT 2K11 and 3 other critically acclaimed installments, while this is the first game EA has released since then. Mike Wang isn't walking through that door anytime soon and in my opinion you got a 2013 version of a game on a next generation console, that isn't even better than the 2009 game on a previous console.

Tear it down, find some new innovative minds and build it all the way over. That whole Ignite thing is a sham, it plays and looks exactly like a lesser version of their last release. If we look very very very hard can we see some semblance of basketball? YES. But in 2013, you don't get kudos for passing with a D. Especially when you've been making basketball games since the late 80s as a company. The reason there isn't any competition in basketball game is all EA's fault for dropping trashy games and bumbled restarts. No coincidence that once we started demanding a higher level of realism in our basketball and football sims, that they have fallen off. Gone are the days when you can just add a dribble stick, or a hit stick and pass off as sim. Now, every nuance is considered.

Real gamers don't expect perfection, it's a video game, but EA has a high school level product trying to make the jump to pro ball against MJ at this point. Tall task and with all due respect I don't think they have the talent or infrastructure to compete on this level anymore.

Nba live is the M. Night Shymalan of video games.. No matter what, people just wont like it.. I.E. "After Earth" was a good movie.
