Rounds 9-12 recap

Welcome to the second half of the 1995 F1 season. Things are starting to be intriguing to say the least, we have potentially a lot of teams being forced out of F1 altogether at the end of this season if things don't improve. So, we got a lot to recap in this post, so let's get started shall we?

Round 9 Silverstone

PreQ Forecast: Wet for the first half hour but drying the rest of the session

Moving on to Qualifying: Herbert, Larini, Diniz, Brundle

Qualifying forecast: Cloudy but dry
Pole Position: Michael Schumacher

Top 6 Race Results
Weather: Heavy rain but easing off in 30 minutes and dry towards the end of the race

1 Katayama
2 Verstappen
3 Alesi
4 Barrichello
5 Herbert
6 Irvine

The weird weather certainly did their part in producing a surprising result. Katayama plays spoiler by winning the race for Benetton-Renault ahead of his former teammate Jos Verstappen. Jean Alesi continues to remind fans why he once was a top level driver earlier in his career by finishing 3rd in the Ligier. Barrichello acquires three valuable points for McLaren. In the meantime, Johnny Herbert scores TWR’s first F1 points by finishing a strong 5th. Eddie Irvine rounds off the top 6 in the Larrousse.

Round 10 Kyalami

F1 returns to Kyalami after a year away from the calendar. This race was only made possible by the implementation of a representative democracy in South Africa and due to the renamed A1 ring in Austria not being ready to be reopened until 1997. In the meantime, the new Kyalami road circuit gets another lease on life after being not so popular the last two occasions that F1 visited there on the current layout.

PreQ: Possible heavy rain towards the end

Moving on to Qualifying: Larini, Panis, Blundell, Brundle

Qualifying weather: Hot and dry
Pole Position: Michael Schumacher

Top 6 Race Results
Weather: Heavy rain at the end of the race
1 Badoer
2 Alesi
3 Berger
4 Frentzen
5 Barrichello
6 Irvine

A torrential downpour at the final five laps of the race caused Schumacher to bin in the gravel trap. This meant that Forti got their first F1 win, something they never did in real life. More importantly, with that win, Luca Badoer is officially off the reject list for drivers and Forti are also off the reject list for Teams. What’s more disturbing is that for the second race in a row, both Hill and Schumacher failed to finish the race and Alesi took advantage of this by finishing 2nd and getting ever so closer to the two front runners. Berger rounds off the podium

Round 11 Hockenheim

Pre Q Forecast: dry

Moving on to Qualifying: Larini, Diniz, Brundle, Herbert

Qualifying weather: Cloudy but dry
Pole Position: Michael Schumacher

Top 6 Race Results
Weather: Wet at first but dry in 45 minutes

1 Schumacher
2 Katayama
3 Martini
4 Lehto
5 Barrichello
6 Hakkinen

Schumacher once again delivers after suffering a letdown in the previous race.

Round 12 Hungary

PreQ Forecast: Dry

Moving on to Qualifying: Larini, Blundell, Panis, Salo

Qualifying Weather: Dry at first but wet later on
Pole Position: Jean Alesi

Top 6 Race Results
Weather: Heavy rain in the second half of the race
1 Alesi
2 Hill
3 Coulthard
4 Panis
5 Berger
6 Verstappen

This championship sure takes a lot of twists and turns. Suddenly with Michael Schumacher once again failing to finish the race due to a mechanical issue and Alesi stealing away a race win with Hill finishing 2nd. This driver’s championship is going to be better than many people would had hoped for, with 3 drivers for three different teams going at it. So here’s the updated drivers and teams standings with four races left to go.

Martini 13
Badoer 12
Verstappen 11
Lehto 5
Irvine 5
Panis 5

Schumacher still holds on to the lead but it grew slightly from 2 points to 6 points. The bigger issue is that Alesi is within 4 points of 2nd place driver Damon Hill.

In the team’s championship, McLaren-Mercedes holds a 7 point advantage over Ferrari. Lotus finally made their first few race appearances of the 1995 season, they are currently holding on to 13th, which is the final FIA prize money slot. Five teams have still yet to make a race appearance this season, now that’s a concern especially for prospective new people looking to either enter F1 or race teams considering a promotion from the Formula 2 ranks.

Stay tuned for the conclusion of the 1995 season!
