Season 7 Preview: 2016 - Wolfpack in the SEC?
Posted on February 17, 2011 at 12:32 PM.
After being hired to turn around a NC State program that was middling at best, Coach Bason went well beyond the call of duty, and did far more than just turn them around. He set a fire underneath the Wolfpack, and after only 4 years, he built a team in his own style and brought the first National Championship to Raleigh in 2013. Two years later, running on a 30 game winning streak, the Wolfpack brought a second Championship home at the end of last season with a thrilling 24-17 victory over Auburn.

Over the course of his tenure, especially in the last two years, NC State has caught the SEC's eye. With a ridiculous record of 78-6 over the past 6 years, including an impressive 13-0 against SEC teams, the Southeastern Conference bigwigs fell in love. This offseason, they proposed marriage, and NC State accepted.

NCSU begins their first season in the SEC primed to make a run at another National Championship with one of the best senior quarterbacks in the nation, Rajon Moon. Armed with a speedy defense and a multitude of offensive weapons, Moon sees another National Championship as a fitting way to finish his senior year at State. But there is a trophy he wants even more. For all three years of his career, Moon has put up the numbers to be on the Heisman list, but he has yet to win it. His numbers got better year after year, and one can only imagine that the numbers he'll put up his senior year will be nothing less than astounding. But will it be enough to bring home the Heisman?

NC State has a nostalgic date at #14 Carolina to open up their season. These two teams may not be in the same conference any more, but don't expect that to lessen the burning hatred between them. Coach Bason only has 6 losses in 6 years, but one of them came at Carolina three years ago. Best believe he hasn't forgotten that, especially a coach on a mission for perfection.

NC State begins the season ranked #5, behind only Ohio State, Auburn, West Virginia, and Florida. With dates against two of those teams on their schedule, there seems no doubt NCSU will be back playing for a Championship...if their winning streak continues.

Later we'll take a look at the impact players on the roster, and further discuss Moon's obsession with the Heisman.
