Carroll's Post Game Notes

A hard fought game against a good Tennessee team, and I liked the heart we showed coming back into this one. Results don't bother me too much in preseason, so I'm not going to focus on the game in my notes, just the positives and negatives to build upon.

Positives

David Hawthorne - The 6'0" 246lb LB entering his 3rd year in the league stepped up and showed exactly what he has to offer this season. He swarmed to the ball all over the pitch, shed blocks, and made tackles. He has turned what was previously Leroy Hill's OLB spot into a real competition, and Hawthorne is the front runner

Defensive Line - The D-Line as a whole played well getting good penetration, particularly big Brandon Lebane who ended the day with 2 sacks

Leon Washington - 100 yards in a game is impressive, but 100 yards after 3 carries is even better. He showed his blazing pace breaking a simple draw play for an 89 yard score to level the game, and followed this up with a 45 yard run on his next carry. The early front runner to lead the three-headed monster

Negatives

Lofa Tatupu - Tore his abdominal early on, and will miss the rest of the preseason. He is the heart of our D, and we have to hope he is not rusty for his return Week 1. However, this allowed David Hawthorne to step up and perform.

Offensive Line - All 3 quarterbacks were under heavy pressure all game, and the backs often got little to work with. Couple this with the fact that there were 3 holding calls costing us crucial field position means we have a long way to go in three weeks.

Quarterback Play - None of the 3 had a QB rating of above 50, and Whitehurst looked like a deer in the headlights up against the Tennessee rush. After giving up a 2nd round pick for him, I expect more. We picked up Colt in free agency and look to test him more as the preseason goes on.

Authors Note: I will be providing detailed summary of regular season games, but will be focusing more around storylines and performance throughout preseason
