After another cup winning season, we've added a lot of youth into the minors and a few to the NHL team as well. I don't expect a ton of changes for at least a few seasons to the core, but bringing in some youth will be important for the longevity of our success.

Off to a decent start despite some key injuries. With an aging core I'm starting to enter a point where I either win or rebuild, for now the winning continues.

Well here we are, after a team record 58-22-2 season, and after round 1...I'm eliminated. Gudbranson was injured in the playoffs, killer to my hopes as nobody else was fitting well with the top line. Now I head into the offseason needing to many quite a few cap saving moves. The top end talent on my team is going to take a hit, at least the top end depth players, like Kiiskinen, maybe Aubry, etc.

Not even going to bother with playoffs.....

VERY disappointing season.
Saturday, March 29, 2014
Off to a 35-10-1 start and my Washington Capitals have only gone through minor changes to the team since last post season. Unfortunately I had to trade a few guys to get enough cap space to re-sign young contract hold outs Shawn Forney and Jussi Kemppainen. Luckily these were minor deals in the grand scheme of things and my team is definitely strong with these 2 options with us.

Here is the lineup, followed by midseason statistics.

What a wild season. Only 2 d-men played over 70 games (Roach, not on the Stats list, played 77). The top line struggled to score as much as I wanted and with the injuries we had some very rough patches. Overall, we had 34 players dress this season for the team.

The scary thing for me is that my high overall d-men all missed significant time. I have to hope they won't lose too much overall.

The playoffs were unfortunately Easy for me this season. I was the healthiest I've been all season in them, with only a few guys missing a few games and nothing major going on otherwise.

From the GM, Dylan Barrons--

Well here I am at the end of my second advance at the helm of the Los Angeles Kings. So far under my leadership we're a solid 9-1-0, for a total of 12-5-0. The team's leaders have really pulled through. Jeff Carter has 12 goals in 17 games on the season, while we also bolster 7 players with at least 10 points already, and nobody in the negative in the plus/minus category.

This advance we had 5 games.

LA 4 @ Phoenix 2 - This game saw our boys come out flying. We scored 2 early goals on Coyotes back up Thomas Greiss before running into penalty trouble and losing Jeff Carter for the game. Unfortunately for the Coyotes, we also injured (not seriously) a few of their better players. In the end the teams traded second half goals and the score was in the favour of LA. But with the physicality of the game, this rivalry is just starting.

San Jose 1 @ LA 4 - Another important rivalry game, this game was actually the first I played of the 5. It saw the debuts of the 6 new members of the lineup and all of them except Johnny Oduya get a point. Quick was in net and had a fairly sold game, which is good considering his slow start this year.

Nashville 1 @ LA 4 - This was another pretty easy game for us. The Predators are obviously lacking some forward depth, but the big factor in the game was the Power Play. We finally got it rolling a little in the umbrella, which is likely what we'll be changing to permanently soon. Rinne fought off a lot of shots, but we were too overwhelming for the Preds.

Buffalo 3 @ LA 2 - When Buffalo came to town, we knew we'd be in a dogfight. Unfortunately we took it a little too far. After scoring the first goal, we got into penalty troubles and Thomas Vanek scored two goals to lead the Sabres to victory. Mike Richards scored late to make it interesting but we couldn't get any pressure for the final push.

Vancouver 1 @ LA 4 - Another 4-1 win against my most hated team. Also saw Hamhuis return to his former team for the first time. Once again our top guys pulled through and led the team to victory. The cpu didn't put up much fight this time around.

Well, the new additions have been strong, Quick's play is improving and things are starting to roll for the Kings. Until next time - GM Barrons.

Well, it's been a little while since my last post, and I once again find myself at the All-Star game. So far I've been having a solid season, made a nice addition of Markku Heino to the second line after Forney got injured, and also added another Fin and former prospect of mine in Niko Kiiskinen.

Unfortunately, I did lose a few minor prospects, Ivan Barbashev (waivers due to cap) and Ruslan Taratukhin (trade) because of cap problems. The core is still in tact though, and Heino has been a great addition to a second line that is producing at a rate I haven't had in a long time. Bylsma on the 3rd line has also helped with the defensive game though.

New Manager Makes Noise Upon Arrival

New Kings Manager Dylan Barrons made his introduction to LA with a bang, making 4 trades in a matter of 2 weeks to bolster the teams top end positions in hopes of bringing another cup to LA.

In came Max Pacioretty, Brandon Saad, Dan Hamhuis, Johnny Oduya and Jeff Petry and a few prospects at the expense of Matt Greene, Willie Mitchell, Alec Martinez, Dwight King, Jordan Nolan, Valentin Zykov and Derek Forbort, as well as some picks.

What was the result of this? well, the team is now 6-0-0 under Dylan Barrons, and the debuts of the 5 new roster players saw all of them except Oduya record at least a point!

Here is a passage from our exclusive interview with the new boss:

Hello and welcome to Los Angeles! How does it feel to be at the helm of this franchise?

Thank you for the warm welcome. It feels great to be here in Los Angeles and to meet the team, we have a great bunch of guys here.

Speaking of the team, you've already made some pretty major changes to the roster, and some would say at the expense of the future. What do you say to this?

This is a fairly young team. Our core is signed for quite a few years and they're not old players by any means. Most are just in their primes now. We also have good young talent on the roster. Guys like Toffoli, Muzzin, Vey and Lewis are all young, plus new additions Saad, Pacioretty, and Petry all have time to grow their games still. We may not have non-NHL prospects, but our team is set up for years to come.

What are your hopes for this team, short and long term?

Well, for this season we'd like to finish top 4 in the conference and hopefully have a solid playoff run. Not sure on our chances at actually winning the cup, but to be in the conversation would be nice. Long term we want to win a cup during my tenure obviously.

A year after being knocked out in the East Finals and revamping my forwards, The Capitals have returned to glory!

The top line of Bradley Boulerice, Boris Glebov and Nick Corazzini had a great first season together, and along with Schaeffer and Khomutov, gave me my first season of major individual awards in the dynasty so far.

Off to the Offseason! Thanks for reading, see you midseason next season.
Thursday, March 20, 2014
After losing in the post-season last year, I went into the offseason with confidence in a young team that would grow. Problem is: Only non-NHL prospects grew. Not many other guys did much, so I had to go to work to revamp the team.

Toby Gelech and Shawn Forney didn't grow, and depth guys regressed, so I went and acquired guys through mostly trades to bring me to pace. The guys are also fairly young so it definitely goes with my interests.

Most of my core are in their prime age now, and I'm seeing that kind of present itself as this has been my best offensive season with guys like Boulerice, Glebov, Gudbranson, as well as the new guys. Only problem now is getting a few guys going to their previous production totals.

Here is the current rosters:

Well, the season didn't turn out as I had hoped. After leading the league in scoring during the regular season, we weren't able to maintain that in the playoffs, and were eventually eliminated in game 7 of the Eastern Final despite the efforts of Schaeffer.

Injuries played a bit of a role, but they aren't the reason I lost. The top offensive players didn't perform in the playoffs and that led to my downfall.

The bright side is the team is still quite young and I'm confident in my top 6. Shawn Forney won the Calder and Toby Gelech had a better season, other than a long term injury. With the growth in the offseason, I believe we'll be able to compete for the cup and be stronger than other next season.

Anyways, here is the team point totals from the season and playoffs:

MEGA TRADE:

Los Angeles' 1st Round Pick

to Vancouver

For D - Jacob Hamilton (90)

Wednesday, March 12, 2014
Well, As I approach the All-Star game, my Washington Capitals team has beaten and clawed it's way to a 26-15-6 start, good for a comfortable 3rd position in the Metropolitan Division.

I have made quite a few moves so far in the season, mostly to address team depth after the changes that took place in the offseason. (see last post for offseason transactions).

Players like Kenneth Peluso, and Jan Satan are my most recent ones (the Pikkarainen deal mentioned earlier was a week 2 move). I have been hesitant to do too much and sacrafice my top prospects. A few guys like Andrei Ovechkin and Jarrod Conner are getting looks to see if they have a future with the team or not in replacement roles as well.

Currently my organizational depth chart looks as follows:

As you can see from those statistics, scoring is down with the loss of top line center Boris Glebov for the majority of the season thus far.

One huge bright side is the performance of Drummond, who was a relative wildcard with only 10 games of NHL experience and 0 points in those games prior to the season. He grew in the offseason and as a 27 year old rookie is having a breakout performance, and has even earned my only spot in the All-Star game this season. If he can keep the production up, he could easily become a permanent 2nd line center, given his size matches perfectly into the team mold.

Another bright spot has been Eugene Bylsma. After spending the offseason debating whether or not to trade the young center, he's emerged as a terrific two-way center like originally planned. He leads the team in faceoff percentage at 55.0% and also in takeaways with 49. While the offense is still coming, it seems as though he's responded to the challenge of the impending NHL arrival of Gelech, who is currently leading the Hershey Bears in scoring.

Downside though, Zykov has taken a massive step back and hasn't meshed as well with Bradley Boulerice as last season. Boulerice has played decently for the most part, but Zykov's production is way down. My other right wing Gudbranson is also struggling to score, even though he's been on a solid shut down line with Bylsma and Drummond. If he keeps dishing to Drummond it won't be a big issue, but if the newcomer stops scoring, Gudbranson's spot could be in jeopardy.

In the AHL my 3 main prospects, Toby Gelech, Blake Roach and Shawn Forney have been doing extremely well. All 3 appear well on their way to be joining the team next season. Roach and Gelech probably should be on the team as it is, but I decided to give them a year of development rather than play them on the 4th line/3rd pairing this year. Both of these 2 appear to be stars in the making for Washington, while Forney has continued to impress in his 3rd AHL season. With the current top 6 right wings struggling, he is eagerly waiting for his chance to play, which could come as soon as the end of the season in the lead-up to the playoffs, pending injuries.

Hope you enjoyed this update. I will likely be playing more games down the stretch run than I have been. Managing the team came first, now that I am happy, playing is in order.

We march on the the Trade Deadline! and then Playoffs!

See you on the Year End Wrap Up!

After my last post I was just before the All-Star game. I made a few depth moves prior to the deadline to address injuries and also just add all around size to the lineup.

Key Additions:

C - Orlando Sipotz
D - Andrei Safronov
D - Scott Harrington
D - Mason Geertsen
LW - Reginald Drummond

I didn't give up too much as far as roster players. Norm Anderson was moved, as was Hampus Lindholm (who was severely underperforming). The other major one was Nelson Cullen, who I had acquired earlier in the year but didn't feel was physical enough for my blueline.

End of the Season Roster:

We went on to have a solid season, despite many injuries to key defensemen, including Oleg Khomutov who was injured just after the Deadline and would miss the rest of the year. We'd also lose Fedorov for a while, and he'd never quite recover to form.

Despite all this, we wound up 47-21-14, second in the division.

In the Playoffs we had 3 rematches from last year.

Round 1 vs. the New York Islanders saw us easily win the series 4-1
Round 2. vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs was also fairly easy, with us winning 4-2
Round 3 vs. the Buffalo Sabres was closer, and we played game 7 missing 3 of our top 5 d-men. We prevailed in game 7 though.

The Stanley Cup Final was a rematch against the Dallas Stars. Unfortunately they were missing their top goalie and defenseman. Still, they went up 3-1 in the series, and we had to battle back to force game 7.

In game 7, Schaeffer allowed 3 goals on 11 shots in the first 11 minutes, in a half of a game that we were desperately outplayed. I put in Robert Renberg and took a timeout, changed the lines. By the end of the second it was 4-3 for the Capitals. Dallas tied it up in the 3rd period and we went to overtime. In OT my depth came through, producing chance after chance until Valentin Zykov took a 5 minute major penalty late in the first OT. A strong penalty kill sent it into a Double Overtime, and we kept killing it off. Glebov hit the post shorthanded, and at the end of the kill we found ourselves in the offensive zone. Drummond, who served the penalty, had a great chance in front but was stopped, Aubry kept it alive, but the Dallas defense collected it. Kapitanov, rushing in from the bench, took out his man, grabbed the puck in the slot, and would put it home to win the Stanley Cup!

Conn Smythe winner was Matt Puempel

Well, I got rid of a lot of good players on my team in favour of some younger talent. Puempel and Ryznar were good warriors, but I wanted to open some spots up for some younger players. Toby Gelech is a big 6'4, 211 lb center, sniper, who has a great future in the league. While he might cap out as a 2nd line center, he also could easily become our top line center in a few seasons. This gives some pressure on Bylsma to perform better than he has in the future, or else the young two-way center could be on the move.

Blake Roach is a big 6'6", 218 lbs defenceman and, at least in my eyes, could be a future #1 defenceman in the league. Like Gelech, he'll get 1 year in the AHL to develop a little more. Could be called up later in the season or for playoffs given his great defensive prowess. A little work offensively and he'll be a true stud.

Jerome Laraque is a young player who actually played 110 NHL games previously. Good speed and shot, I am planning to develop him a little into a possible 3rd line center. This season though he'll be an AHLer.

Tim Fata is a grinder from the Oilers who is young, and decent speed who can obviously hit. Solid 3rd-4th liner, going to be a key contributor to the team for the future.

Bo Horvat was a 4th liner for the Canucks, and when I was trading Safronov and a few others for Pikkarainen, he was thrown in. Solid PWF who could contribute for us.

Lasse Pikkarainen is a very solid defenceman, also from Vancouver. Safronov was traded for him, he brings in a more mobile, offensive defenseman, while not hurting us defensively. Brings me some excitement on the back end.

Mikael Ohlund was my only really important free agent signing. The former Islanders defenseman has terrorized me in the past so when he was a UFA I jumped all over that. Also gives me GREAT depth on the back end and lets me not force Roach into the lineup.
