After watching the MLB 14: The Show First Look live last night on the MLB Network, my first reaction was one of disappointment. I wasn't disappointed with anything I saw, but more of what I didn't see. I was really hoping for some gameplay footage; though I realize that, at this time, this was probably more wishful thinking that anything else.

Part of the reason I wanted to see the game in action is because I already trust it will look good. I think MLB The Show on the current generation ... Read More

We are about three weeks into the launch of MLB 13's newest mode, The Show Live, and what was once a potentially awesome mode has turned into somewhat of a disappointment.

This mode, which is supposed to allow you to play or replay any game on the MLB schedule, is full of strange bugs and unfortunate limitations.

At the most basic level, The Show Live will allow you to choose to play any game from the 2013 season. Technically, rosters should be close to what was set ... Read More

The Show says The Reds are set to be the best team in baseball in 2013.

Using MLB 13: The Show and the OS Full Minor Rosters, we've simulated the entire 2013 Major League Baseball season. Realize that this is more a fun exercise, rather than a deep statistical prediction that, admittedly. would require multiple sims and advanced math to really get right.

For the most part, our "one-off" simulation produced ... Read More

A few Friday OS baseball gaming notes:
  • I had hoped to give a good run-down of The Show's MLB Live mode, which launched earlier in the week. As of right now, though, the mode still seems to be working out some rough spots. Incorrect records, wrong starters, strange line-ups, and "TBD" players have plagued this mode early on. I'll give it at least a week before doing a full review.
  • A review I am working on is Dynasty League Baseball

It's been nearly a month since MLB 13: The Show released and about a week since the first official update dropped. MLB Live started today, and we expect the OS Full Minor roster sometime this week. Basically, if you haven't yet experienced this stellar game, it's not too late; the season's just getting started.

However, since my official OS review, I've made a couple of observations that are worth noting:

Operation Sports was granted an early review copy of MLB 13: The Show; while I spent a good deal of time with the title this weekend, all of the online/connected features weren't working as of this morning. This includes new areas like MLB Live and improved modes, like Diamond Dynasty. My review of the game will include these elements and more!

However, I have gotten the chance play a lot of exhibition games, ... Read More

We are within a week of MLB: The Show's launch, and information is pouring out. Two of the more interesting pieces of press material are the player and team ratings.

Without further introduction, here, in no particular order, are some of my Winners and Losers of the ratings game:

1. Andrew McCutchen, 99: I get that he had a great season last year--enough to get him a cover spot--but ... Read More

It wasn't too long ago that choosing a baseball game each year was a tough decision. MVP, High Heat, All Star, World Series, and even Home Run King brought individual strengths and features to the field.

I'd like to say that this generation replaced quantity with quality, but that's not entirely the case. The MVP series still has an active following on the PC, and if you ask those that only own a 360, I'm sure ... Read More

MLB: The Show 13 released a new video yesterday, recapping the new features you’ll find when you pick up the game on March 5th.

To be honest, if you have been following press for this game, you might not be too impressed with this latest bit of promotion. Sure, it covers the major features, though with pretty broad strokes. Mostly, there are a lot of big names in baseball talking about and playing--or at least pretending ... Read More

MLB 13: The Show just released a preview on Franchise Mode, my favorite mode in the series for the last five-plus years. As someone who doesn’t play a lot online, I’m happy to see them improve this area of the game--an area, that admittedly, had become a little cumbersome to navigate and full of features most players probably turned off.

Before I break down the list of improvements, there's a big caveat to any opinion ... Read More

Today I picked up a used copy of MLB 2K6, hoping to take a look at the ONE game (in the 6 year history of the event) to represent the World Baseball Classic. I had hoped to detail the specifics of the mode, see if it could work within a modern franchise mode, and perhaps simulate the tournament for fun.

But something happened on the way to the field--actually, more like something didn't happen. I couldn't ... Read More

The recently released MLB 13: The Show fact list is a hot topic on the OS forums, and not without reason. The extensive press release covers 16 major additions and 50 bulleted improvements.

Here are my quick thoughts regarding what’s new with The Show:

The “Post Season” Mode: I’m thankful that this is here for no other reason than making our playoff sims easier to manage (doing it through exhibition ... Read More

I think it's fair to state that baseball games, especially The Show and OOTP, have had a more consistent run than most other sports titles. Both have been critical hits since at least 2006.

One problem with continued success is the expectations thrust upon each iteration. Maintaining quality can be hard enough; adding improvements to meet consumer exceptions can be tougher.

With that in mind, here are ... Read More

Well, seemingly out of no where, 2K Sports announced MLB 2K13 and a March 5th release date.

This is a surprise to most, since there was no mention of this game prior to today. It wasn't on 2K's release list, and was reportedly losing the company money.

It seems that a new (more favorable?) licensing contract was established with Major League Baseball, letting 2K provide Xbox 360 owners their only ... Read More

For many OS'ers, the months following the holiday season are dull: football's nearly over, we don't have College Hoops games any more, and the "new game shine" of FIFA and NHL have worn off.

However, for me (and probably many of you), this is my favorite time of the sports gaming calendar. From now until early March, we'll get a slow trickle of baseball gaming news, as well as a healthy amount of speculation and ... Read More
