Buffalo Bills Franchise Recap (Madden 10)
Posted on August 17, 2009 at 06:12 PM.
It's the first time I'm posting such a recap here on OS, but I just made this post on a Buffalo Bills forum and would like to copy it over here since I wasted so much time typing it out. If anyone would like to hear more, just let me know. It's not going to be a full-fledged "story line" like many of the posts in the Dynasty HQ forum are, just a little recap of sorts. I Peench's amazing Lion franchise progression thread on the Madden forum is an inspiration for this.
----------------------------------

2009 Season Simulation:
-released OLB Keith Ellison, FS Ko Simpson, WR Justin Jenkins, C Marvin Philip, LE Ryan Denney
-signed OLB Derrick Brooks, DE Josh Thomas (OP-born!), G Greg Isdaner (later converted to C)

Key injuries: MLB Paul Posluszny (out 10 weeks after pre-season)
OLB Derrick Brooks (out 12 weeks after week 1)

Key Offensive Stats:
-QB Trent Edwards - 3250 yards, 30 TD, 17 INT (I guess TO helped him out)
-WR Terrell Owens - 1350 yards, 13 TD
-HB Marshawn Lynch (with a three-week "benching" I gave him to correspond with his suspension) - 997 rushing yards, 7 rushing TD, 318 receiving yards, 3 receiving TD
-HB Fred Jackson - 765 rushing yards, 4 rushing TD, 112 receiving yards, 1 receiving TD

Key Defensive Stats:
-MLB John DiGiorgio (completely unrealistic since he's on IR in real life): 104 tackles, 57 tackle assists, 2 sacks, 1 INT, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery
-SS Donte Whitner: 81 tackles, 1 sack, 0 INT (VERY realistic, I must say)
-DE Aaron Maybin: 32 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 0 INT
-DE Aaron Schobel: 45 tackles, 4 sacks(!), 0 INT
-DE Chris Kelsay: 56 tackles, 8 sacks(!), 1 INT (a pick-six!)
-CB Leodis McKelvin: 4 INT
-CB Terrence McGee: 2 INT
-CB Ellis Lankster: 15 tackles, 2 sacks, 0 INT
-FS Jairus Byrd: 2 sacks(!), 3 INT

Overall record: 9-7 (missed playoffs, T-2nd in AFC East.)

Simulated AFC East Standings in 2009:
1. Patriots 12-4
T2. Bills 9-7
T2. Jets 9-7
4. Dolphins 6-10

Super Bowl: Pats/Cards (Cardinals win)
----------------------------

2010 Season Simulation:

RETIREMENT:
-OLB Derrick Brooks

KEY RE-SIGNINGS:
-WR Terrell Owens 3-yr extension
-CB Terrence McGee 5-yr extension (which backfired...)
-Signed QB Trent Edwards (one year remaining in contract) to new 5-year deal

FREE AGENCY:
-Backup RG Mark Setterstrom (STL) - 2 yr. 1.15 mil total
This was the only signing I made in the FA period due to the lack of any "impact" free agents and low cap space that I needed to save for draft picks. I know, it's a very Russ Brandon move...

2010 NFL DRAFT:
Round 1: WR Deonte Thompson (Florida) - overall: 78 potential: A
Round 2: MLB Ryan D'Imperio (Rutgers) - overall: 68 potential: A (later converted to OLB)
Round 3: CB Javier Arenas (Alabama) - overall: 67 potential: B
Round 4: QB Colt McCoy (Texas) - overall: 58 potential: B
Round 5: FB Chris Gronkowski (Arizona) - overall: 59 potential: C
Round 6: HB Matt Asiata (Utah) - overall: 51 potential: C (later cut due to roster space issues)
Round 7: LT Chris Scott (Tennessee) - overall: 48 potential: D (later cut due to roster space issues)

(FYI - first pick in the draft went to the Raiders, they drafted junior DT Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma, overall rating 82 with a potential of A. Tim Tebow went to the Broncos and UB's James Starks went early in the first round to the Bungles!)

THE LONE TRADE:
-Traded LE Chris Kelsay and 4th Round Pick in 2011 Draft to Raiders for 2nd Round Pick in 2011 Draft (yes, they actually bit on that, way to go Oakland...and they said Madden 10's trading engine was more realistic...)

Key Injuries: -RG Eric Wood (out 8 weeks after week 3)
-CB Leodis McKelvin (out for season/IR after week 9)
-LT Langston Walker (out for season/IR after week 7, Demetrius Bell replaces him)
-WR Deonte Thompson (out 7 weeks after week 6)

Key Offensive Stats:
-QB Trent Edwards - 3050 yards, 24 TD, 13 INT
-HB Marshawn Lynch - 1578 rushing yards, 11 rushing TD, 466 receiving yards, 4 receiving TD
-WR Terrell Owens - 988 receiving yards, 11 TD
-WR Lee Evans - 842 receiving yards, 5 TD
-TE Shawn Nelson - 461 receiving yards, 3 TD

Key Defensive Stats:
-MLB Paul Posluszny - 128 tackles, 2 sacks, 0 INT, 5 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries
-SS Donte Whitner - 68 tackles, 0 sacks, 3 INT(!)
-LE Aaron Maybin - 43 tackles, 12 sacks
-RE Aaron Schobel - 38 tackles, 10 sacks (good, so he bounced back!)
-OLB Ryan D'Imperio - 79 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 INT
-CB Leodis McKelvin (before season-ending injury in Week 9) - 32 tackles, 0 sacks, 3 INT
-CB Terrence McGee - 27 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 INT (made a MAJOR mistake re-signing him!)
-CB Ellis Lankster - 18 tackles, 0 sacks, 2 INT
-FS Jairus Byrd - 37 tackles, 1 sack, 3 INT

Overall record: 9-7 (WON AFC EAST)

Simulated AFC East Standings in 2010:
1. Bills 9-7
2. Patriots 8-8
3. Jets 5-11
4. Dolphins 3-13

Since I won the division, I'm currently set to take on the surprising Cincinatti Bengals (11-5!) at The Ralph in a sort of homecoming for James Starks (who the Bengals drafted). If anyone's interested, I'll post results of that game in this thread after I play it.

EDIT: This is probably the best Madden Franchise mode in years. No, it's not perfect but the addition of the "potential grades" and new player progression based on performance and age make it a lot more realistic. I wonder if McGee's underperforming will lead to a rating decrease. I seriously hope so.

This is actually something the real-life Bills need to consider. McGee, although he's a solid DB, has some big question marks. I wouldn't mind getting rid of him if McKelvin and rookies like Ellis Lankster and Cary Harris have a big year this year. But yeah, I completely regret extending McGee. Maybe a trade could be in the works if he doesn't get his act together in 2011...
