Versatile players
Posted on January 11, 2009 at 07:38 AM.
I first posted this just after Sammy Baugh died, he was probably the most versatile player ever to play in the NFL.

He once led the league in Passing yards, punting avg, and Defensive interceptions all in one season.

In the 2007 season, the leaders in those three categories were: Tom Brady, Shane Lechler and Antonio Comartie. Now, imagine one player who was as good as all of them. F-cking madness. If it had never happened and I made that up, you'd think I was insane (maybe you do anyway...).

So to commemorate the passing (pun intended) of Sammy Baugh, here's my blog post about versatility in sports.

Deion Sanders The only man ever to play in both a Superbowl and a World Series, and the most recent two-sport star.

He hit 39 career Home Runs and Stole 186 bases as a baseball player, and as a football player he had 9 Kick/punt return Touchdowns, 3 Receiving touchdowns, 9 INT return touchdowns, and a fumble recovery touchdown. He also threw 2 career passes.

Wes Welker A slightly strange choice you might think, but he is one of only two players to convert a FG, convert an XP, record a tackle and have a kick off and a punt return in the same game. I'm not sure who the other one is, but I'm going to guess at Paul Hornung.

José Luis Chilavert (Paraguayan soccer player) Well known, to me at least, for retiring as the leading scorer among goalkeepers with 62 goals, including 8 for Paraguay. He once scored a hat-trick of penalty kicks. He also won numerous goalkeeping awards.

Dennis Compton Slightly old-school here, but a two-sport star at around the time Sammy Baugh played football. He played soccer for Arsenal (and unofficially for England during the war) and also played Cricket for Middlesex and Enlgand, and had a test batting avg of 50.06, most good players avg is around 35.

Wasn't Bo Jackson also a two-sports star? Might be worth mentioning. Also, Otto Graham played quarterback and punter, I believe.

True I forgot about Bo. As for Graham, I think he was primarily a QB and didn't punt all the time, I could be wrong on that though.
