Theory: Jersey Number Size and Possible Solution
Posted on June 20, 2011 at 03:10 PM.
There has been much talk on the forum about wrong number sizes on jerseys. Why doesn't it look right?

I believe the problem stems from them not having a constant size. Meaning, the size of the number gets bigger or smaller depending on the height of the player.

In the real NFL, as far as I've seen, the number size does not change. So smaller players appear to have larger numbers due to the fact they take up more space on the smaller jersey. A great example of this is DeSean Jackson.

Notice how large his number looks? Now lets look at a larger Eagles receiver...

(Horrible picture... why did you make that throw Vick?!)

Anyway, you can see that Riley Cooper's (6'3 222lbs) number does not take up as much space as DeSean's (5'10 175lbs...when soaking wet) number, but they appear to be the same size. Here is a good example of the size comparison with other receivers...

So, I decided to test this out my theory on my copy of Madden 11. I Made two players (both offensive lineman so I could have them side by side) and gave them mirrored numbers, 87 and 78. I then made on of them as short as it would allow me and one as tall as the game would allow me. I messed with weights but found they didn't really affect the number size, so I made them both 400lbs in order to view the jersey better. What I got was this...

First image is from Madden 11, the second is one I photoshoped to match the size. Notice how the number size changes between players?

So what's the solution? Simple, I would think, just measure out the number size of every NFL jersey (front, back and shoulders) and implement it into the game without the ability for it to be re-sized. This would quiet the complaints many have and would eliminate the need to address the problem on a player by player basis.

Nice but you should have used DeSean Jackson for the comparison.

Nice Post! I like the idea. I remember when the names on jersey's were updated. Now they look much better! Perhaps down the road a feature for such a enhancement will come to be!
