E3 Day 1 Takwaways: PS4 vs. XBox One Stuck

Watched these two giants battle it out for next gen console superiority. I thought Microsoft dominated with games for their conference. I was completely impressed with their showing until the price. Even then, I was okay with it because I just figured; we're looking at $500 systems.

Sony's press conference bored me, nothing was being shown, in fact, very little even went on through it in my opinion, but they did what they needed to and dropped a megaton on Microsoft’s head with price and DRM. This is what gamers wanted to hear, not publishers, but in the end, gamers are what make these games and consoles.

I do believe Sony sat back and changed something, maybe price, between the Microsoft presser and the Sony one though, just seemed like they waited Microsoft out. Sony was in a better seat for this to let Microsoft make the mistakes and play off them. See how the crowd, twitter and forums reacted.

I don't know how XBox recovers from this. The system will still sell, and will still be popular with the shooter crowd, but Sony will have a giant leg up on the competition right from the get go.

Microsoft needs to come out and drop the online check and DRM stuff, but they almost can't with their new structure of every game being in the cloud, etc. Would essentially allow people to rent XB1 games from Red Box for 2 bucks and own them. Publishers won't like that. So not really sure where Microsoft goes from here, but they need something to stop the bleeding, the bloodbath I watched on twitter against them was almost hard to watch. I’ve never seen the web completely turn on anything like that before.

Also, long term effects of this against Sony. Will 3rd party see this as a middle finger to them and give Microsoft the support? Or will they see that this was in fact, a mistake, essentially leaving Microsoft out to dry. If Sony is selling systems this holiday like hotcakes, 3rd parties aren't going to turn down that money.

The games that MS impressed me with were Dead Rising 3, Forza, Ryse, and Killer Instinct (which finding out is free to play concerns me a bit with quality). Sony really didn't wow me with any first party stuff, but has the same 3rd party stuff Microsoft has. Microsoft other big exclusive was Titanfall, which later on I realized it's also a 360 game, which is a big blow to XB1's push for that title’s exclusivity. Graphics won't be that much different and I can already play it on my current system, a lot of gamers are probably already thinking that same thing.

I also noticed that the EA/MS partnership wasn't mentioned at all during the press conferences. Just the 2 exclusive titles (Titanfall and Garden Warfare) were mentioned as Xbox exclusives, the latter also coming to 360.

I have both systems pre-ordered at Amazon, heavily leaning towards the PS4 right now. I will end up with only one but don't see much that can change my mind.

When it comes to price, they are a total wash for me.

XB1 - $560 ($499 system, $60 controller, already have XBL through 2014)

PS4 - $570 ($400 system, $60 controller, $60 camera, $50 PS+)

Best opening day of E3 ever though. It can only go up from here.

Actually Microsoft is $40 more if you add the cost of XBoxLive to the bill. It's only a wash because you have already paid for it. The cost is still there, even though you've paid ahead.

As I said though, it's "for me", I wasn't comparing prices for everyone. I'm paid up through September of 2014.

If we are talking everyone.

XB1 - $499 system, $60 controller, $60 XBL = $620

PS4 - $399 system, $60 controller, $60 camera, $50 PS+ = $570

Thanks. From what I can see, at this stage the PS4 may have an edge because of (1) lower base system price point of $399 vs. $499 (but does not include camera); (2) no Sony-based restrictions on used games - this could be a big deal; (3) no Sony requirement to have internet connection to play games (XBox appears to require an always-on internet connection); and (4) PS4 uses GDDR5 RAM (would appear to be superior to XBox One DDR3 RAM).

You can say what you will about MS dominating with games....but Sony has 14 first party studios. The 360 had a great initial exclusive line up (from 3rd party studios that later went multi platform) and after that there was only Halo, Gears, and Forza on Xbox. While Sony is still releasing blockbuster games like The Last of Us, Beyond Two Souls, and Gran Turismo 6 for the PS3...

I actually thought the PS3 exclusives of "Last of Us" and "Beyond 2 Souls" are 2 of the best exclusive games coming this year. Both games actually look next generation with engaging stories.

@cavs25 real talk..

Being a Halo, Gears and Forza fan, Xbox 1 will get my purchase. I'm an older gamer with a family, so the integrated entertainment options, plus the Kinect for my kids is huge.

It's over before it even started. I've been an XBOX fan since the original. Gave away my PS3 to a friend who moved in town and didn't have a gaming system.

As a consumer I refuse to by products that I don't want when I buy something.

I don't want Kinetic. I'm not moving around to play a game because I usually only play when I'm smoking the cheeba.

Most of the games I do buy are used. I'm not a kid so I don't have to be first inline anymore when a game comes out.

Since I play NBA2k the most you would have to be a fool to buy that game the day it comes out since it always has to be patched.

So the last few years I buy it used.

It was nice knowing you Xbox. Good luck.

Does anybody know if you need to purchase a subscription to PS+ to have access to roster updates, and patches? I wouldn't think so, but I haven't seen anything on this.

I'm pretty much a strictly offline player, who wants to sit on my *** when I have time to play video games, not jump around in front of camera, plus baseball is my favorite sport so this is a no brainer decision for me.

The whole thing reminded me of an MMA fight were it looked like it was tied going into the 3rd round, but then the guy from the red corner came in and destroyed the other guy, almost finished him and made a fight that looked it could end on a split decision an unanimous one.

You could tell by the uproar from the people in attendance that when Jack Trentton announced the non-restrictions in terms of used games and the non-requirement of an online connection at all times that the power had shifted towards one side alone.

Still going with the PS4. I don't play online and find the camera and kinect to be stupid. Most of the games I'll just get for the PC anyway. It's all about RPGs and Sports games. PS4 is clearly king for both of those genres.

Just curious as to why you're including the cost of the camera? Is it a required peripheral?

Also, PS4 comes with a headset. Does the X1?

# 14 legacyme3 @ Jun 11
I'll be buying a PS4. Why anyone would want a One, especially after E3 confuses me.

PS4 with no camera, no extra controller, and one copy of nba 2k14=$459.99
