In recent years, 2K Sports moved away from blocking in their critically acclaimed NBA 2K Series which sent fans in a frenzy. Everyone thought it would be no different this year, but 2K Sports has revealed a new blocking system in NBA 2K14, which will also include the ability to block dunks.

It’s all about the timing for blocking dunks and even layups. You can even hear a sound when you block dunks as well. With bringing back the ability to block dunks it adds more realism to the game, which was lacking in NBA 2K13. This year players won't have to deal with the frustrations of not being able to stop an offensive player once they're in an animation.

The best thing about the addition of being able to block dunks is the fact that signature skills, such as Chase Down Artist & Eraser are now looked at in a better light. Eraser is a good signature skill for aggressive defensive big men in the paint, and Chase Down Artist gives those athletic long winged players a better chance at the defensive end, during fast breaks or even in the half court set.

From what I experienced while playing NBA 2K14, I blocked a dunk with a chest to chest animation (some resulted in a foul because of heavy contact, but some blocks were a result of good defense). I also blocked a dunk from behind while the offensive player was in his back scratcher dunk package animation (this will be a very good opportunity for a defensive guy that is in the right place at the right time. With timing and player placement you can virtually block those much more flashy and power dunks that take more time being suspended in air). I even punched two dunks, one towards the backboard and one out of bounds (both blocks happened during a fast break situation. The block out of bounds came from a chase down, on an angle and the block that slapped the ball towards the backboard came from a chase down while I was still behind a defender).

At the end of the day, I am happy 2K Sports decided to bring back blocking on a whole new level and I will be one of those fans that won't take a defender lightly while trying to force myself in the paint.

about damn time. I just hated how you couldn't block a player from behind.

"Chase Down Artist gives those athletic long winged players a better chance at the defensive end..."

Did you just reveal something else here? Or am I reading into it a bit too much?

Certainly a welcome addition. I'm all for gameplay advancements.

Nice, i hated the fact that once a player goes into the dunking animation it's damn near impossible to block, no matter if you have a tall defender with the eraser skill trying to block a shorter defenders dunk. Sounds like in air collisions are more realistic, rather than often when someone goes up for a dunk or layup the defender just phasing by that player when you attempt to block or alter the shot.

Sounds good. My question would be if these blocks feel natural or if they seem canned. The best example I can think of from past 2k games would be canned steal animations where the ball wouldnt feel live. instead of feeling like I was rewarded for attempting a steal at the right time I would feel like I was lucky that the animation was triggered. Theres one steal in particular where the defender would steal the ball and the offensive player would automatically dive for the ball (I forget if this was in 2k13 or previous years), that animation best describes what I am talking about.

Sounds great! I just hope it's not overdone on the boarder of unrealistic like when PG's were blocking big men under the basket in past iterations of the game.

Cool. Will players be allowed to pump fake without the pump fake being "blocked"?
